Spirit Looking At Key West! EYW

Fri Sep 07, 2007 10:00 pm

A little late in checking my emails yesterday from my spy down in EYW, he advised Spirit dropped a A319 into EYW to do some "route proving" (I say to ensure they don't end up in the Salt Flats).

Blurb in the paper -
"Airline tests Key West airport
Key West Citizen
Spirit Airlines is considering adding Key West to its routes and this week sent a 144-seat plane to test the runway with a series of touch-and-gos. The Miramar-based airline will meet with Monroe County airport officials next week to discuss whether Spirit's A319 Airbus will become a frequent..." Full story available on Saturday.

I know they used to do this with the Eastern 722, wait till these NIMBYs see this one in todays paper...

Found some additional portions of the article, sounds like the big rub will be the terminal capacity. Till new terminal is complete the departure lounge will need to be expanded further outdoors.

Here is the additional portions of the article:

Quote:
Spirit Airlines is considering adding Key West to its routes

a series of touch-and-gos.
The Miramar-based airline will meet with Monroe
County airport officials next week to discuss whether
Spirit’s A319 Airbus will become a frequent flier to the
Southernmost City.
“We haven’t heard anything officially from them that they’re
coming, but we’re certainly being considered,” Monroe County
Airports Director Peter Horton said of both the Key West and
Marathon airports. “If they do come in with the frequency we
hope for, this would be the biggest news for the airport since
Delta began direct flights to Atlanta” in 2002.
Spirit’s Airbus carries twice as many passengers as Delta’s,
yet is only 4 feet longer, so either runway should accommodate
them, Horton said. The plane’s wings help it maneuver
on shorter runways.
Company spokeswoman Alison Russell would not comment
on the possibility of Spirit flying to Key West, saying...

When I was there last November the terminal was bursting at the seams with pax departing on a US Express E170 & the AEagle ATR72. I did find security the most efficient & friendliest of any US airport I have been to..........and love the bar with the view of the tarmac!

It's certainly possible. Eastern used to operate 727s in/out of EYW to MIA. I've also seen a private 737-200 operate from the airfield. If the A318 can get LCY certified, surely the A319 could handle operations in/out of EYW.

Just out of curiosity, could a 717 land down there? Not that I expect FL to look at EYW -- they pulled out of MYR and aren't interested in ACY.

That's still a very short runway....hell, I flew in there on an EMB-120 and a Cessna Grand Caravan and it was an interesting experience! EYW spotters be ready, that'll be a nice sight if it happens. Final approach should be a blast, as well.

I think others can speak for the technical aspects of 717 vs 319, but I would imagine the 717 would need to be weight restricted, especially from ATL. Others have said the expect the 319 to be restricted to 100 pax even from FLL.

My spies in SoFla are hearing Spirit wants to start with 4x daily from FLL (partially to open gate space in FLL, they would send a bird down to EYW).

I would think they would start with 1-2 daily. Nassau is only 2-3 and Freeport 1 daily and both are effectively utilization flying of the Airbus aircraft.

If they actually operate 4x daily it would be quite amazing but again my bet would be 1-2x daily.

but the A319 will hold more pax than either of these services.

airport can't handle it right now, and nimby's may, rightfully, object, since the airport hasn't supported flights of this type for a generation...

Just because the airplane can hold 144 doesnt mean they will be anywhere close to be able to do that going in and out of EYW. We (Chautauqua) used to go in there in a 135 and some on a 145 at the end there were very weight restricted. But the ERJ is a very underpowered airplane too.

Actually they (especially the 135) are quite powerful. It's just the lack of lift caused by no leading edge device on the wings that makes them seem sluggish on take off rolls.

EYW's runway is even shorter than LCY's, and it's only 100' wide. The high average temps and humidity (because water vapor is less dense than molecular oxygen or nitrogen) would also add to the challenge of operating the A319 at EYW.

Rio De Janiero's Santos Dumont Airport has 73Gs and A319s going to Sao Paulo(230ish miles) and its runway is 500ish feet shorter, but 38ft wider.

For the non Florida folks who doubt this route will be supported..... think again. We ( South Floridians) LOVE the keys, but sometimes the 4 hour plus drive kills the idea of heading down for a weekend. Being able to jump a flight and be there in 30 minutes is pretty cool! If NK picks this up don't be surprised if it does very well. Key West is becoming more commercial with each passing tourist season. This could be a great move for NK and for the Key West Economy.

I think the people might fight it, not because of what it is, but what it will lead to. Those planes fly in LOW over every house in old town, and the RJs are loud enough.

My family used to live in a historic house right under the flight path. The propjets weren't too bad, as the noise footprint moved over quickly, but the jets, you could hear them sooner, the noise lasted longer, and the reverse thrusters were loud too.

South Floridians might love the keys, but SoFla-Key West has less than 40 daily O&D passengers, both ways. Spirit could bring low fares and make flying more attractive, though.

Certification at LCY is more to do with the sharp angle needed for both take off & landing rather than run way length

While we normally agree. I would argue the O/D numbers are loaded.

The EYW market is good for about 5 months from S Fla. for O/D and stinks for 5 months. About 2 months are Ok.

The NK flights would tap much of the lost market that has existed in the past. In addition it would provide feed to EYW from markets like LGA, DTW, ACY, ATL, MCO, TPA, LAS, and others.

I think it could work. I am willing to bet there will be issues with the NIMBYs but other then that and the balanced field length and W+B issues it should be ok.

FLR (Florence, Italy) routinely sees A319 service and they have a 4700 foot runway and as mentioned, let's not forget SDU(Santos Dumont) has only 4400 feet...so it obviously can be done. Shouldn't be much of an operational issue on a short haul flight such as EYW-FLL.

Damn, those pilots are going to have to be skilled, I hear about Delta RJ pilots complaining about how tough Key West is all the time. That's gonna be a narrow strip for an A319!
