Airline Alliances Status IN 3 Main Turkish Airport

Fri Sep 07, 2007 10:36 pm

The three main international airports in Turkey with premium business travellers are ISTANBUL ATATURK, ANKARA ESENBOGA and IZMIR ADNAN MENDERES.

The three main airline alliances worldwide are STAR ALLIANCE, ONE WORLD and SKYTEAM.

All 3 main Turkish Airports are served by at least one member of Star Alliance and One World. However, the SKYTEAM network covers Istanbul only.

Anybody wants to comment when AF/KL would add Izmir and/or Ankara to its network.

I think KL especially can easily sustain a daily 737 flight to ESB or ADB if they want to. With LH being the biggest foreign airline out of Turkey, I see the AF/KL group challenging them on Turkey, which is one of the fastest growing markets in the world. This way skyteam will have a foothold at an airport other then IST.

Concerning the KL part. Turkey is a very popular holidaydestination and frequent flights to Izmir are offered out of AMS by Transavia which is owned by KL.

No clue why they aren't represented in ESB. Considering the amount of Turkish people in the Netherlands the market is big enough to start competition.

In fact KLM served Ankara from April 1954 until November 1991 at which time the flights were ceased due to Gulf Crisis. At that time the flight was operating by KLM A310 in two class configuration AMS-ESB-ADB-AMS twice weekly.

It may be interesting but KLM had the biggest market share in Ankara between 1954 until 1970 when LH started serving Ankara daily.

AF has a longer history as the flights started in mid40ies as a stopover for Paris Teheran flights but kept a on and off pattern over the years. The last time it started was in 1987 with thrice weekly AF B727 from CDG to Ankara, after 3 years turning in to 5 times weekly B737 or A320 from CDG non-stop that run until 1996. It has been stopped eversince due to high load factor.

In fact both Ankara and Izmir deserve daily flights from AMS and CDG by AF/KLM.

Delta can code share the AF flights to CDG as Ankara, a long time PAN AM destination, is also not served by DL ever since DL took over PA.
