Qatar Airways Update

Sat Sep 08, 2007 1:51 am

Qatar Airways has announced some changes to the winter schedule taking place from 6th September 2007. (Unless Stated)

Some of this news will have been announced in other posts..

Washington Dulles - IAD - Moved from 3-class A340-600 to 2-class 777-300ER from 1st January 2008. Daily.

Manchester - MAN - Increased to daily A330-300. Up from a mix of A330-300s and 200s.

Moscow - DME - Increased to A330-200 from A300-600R from 11th January 2008.

Paris - CDG - Changed to 2x weekly A330-300, 2x weekly A330-200 + Daily A340-600.

Rome - FCO - To be 2x weekly A330-300 and 2x weekly A330-200.

Casablanca - CMN - 1x weekly A330-300 and 1x weekly A330-200 will now serve the non-stop routings.

---

In other news, as previously mentioned in another one of my posts; A7-BAA will be the first 777-3DZ(ER) for the airline. It will be in a two class configuration.

Thanks Rob!

The 773 config (or should I say 77W config, more accurately!) is in stark contrast from EK's config, which - if I recall correctly, is 42C 385Y, so I'm presuming the QR acft will be in 9 abreast layout? What is the J Class layout - I'm presuming 6 abreast?

Reported on PPRUNE that the govt's VIP A340-200 may be pressed into commercial service, to operate some flights for QR. Any confirmation?

Most 2 class EK 77W are in fact 400Y 42 J quite some difference, shows EKs greed, yet they still pack them right up.

The 10 across 777's of EK are a back breaker. They're packed only because they're usually the cheapest and their just aren't enough seats for all the butts that want to fly.
What the...?

This post made me check my December/Jan LHR-DOH-KUL flights with QR and it seems the DOH-KUL legs are now on A332's as opposed to the A300. Are the A300's on their way out?

Some more updates:

DUBAI will get some 77W services
KUL will upgrade to A332 starting Sept. 19, 2007, and BALI will get A332 by dafault.

The A300's are going out. Sept 18 should see the last QR A300 arriving at KUL  Sad

I don't see the need right now to serve JFK because they still doing the Newark Liberty International Airport Via Geneva. I think their next step will be to do the flight non stop then expand into JFK. Also don't forget that JFK is well served from Emirates (Three Daily flights) & Etihad (One Daily flight) so It was cleaver from QR to go to Newark and have the route without competitors.

A7-AFD

I dont think QR wants to go to EWR nonstop since they said they will increase frequency to 6 times weekly starting in 2008. Perhaps, they might start flights to JFK with A340's or even to LAX.

I next ULH route for QR, I think, is MEL...

absolutely!

The DOH-GVA-EWR route should be upgraded to an A 333 as I feel the A 332 is too small for this route. QR's 3 class A 332 seats 218 pax where as its A 333s seat 259 and should carry 1-2 tonnes more cargo.

The KUL flights are being upgraded to 6 weekly A332 and 1 weekly A333 flight!!

DOH-BAH will be upgraded to 40 flights per week starting early 2008.

Can someone confirm QR recieving its A340-300 (A7-AAH)? The Doha Airport and Bangkok Airport site confirm that QR flies these routes with the A340. Thanks

Please don't slate me for asking, as it has probably been asked a million times before.  duck

EK is out for world domination, with Etihad close behind. QR on the other hand is much more conservative in it's expansion and does not have as many destinations or the frequency to match. It doesn't even serve EWR daily or direct, compared to EK's 3x daily out of JFK.

Based on all of this, would QR be better to fill a gap with an alliance? I am biased as I am a member of them but Oneworld comes to mind despite RJ already being a member (SQ and TG are closer still but in the same alliance, although begrudgingly). Neither Star or Skyteam have a carrier based in the Middle East.

Many thanks!

And quite successful at it as well, regardless of what we think of their plans or means of accomplishing them.

Still a few years to go.... not quite there yet.

Quoting Skyhigh (Reply 34):

QR is still "bigger" than EY though it appears that their expansion and growth is more "chaotic" than say EK where things appear (on the surface) to be well planned and orchestrated. Unlike EK, QR's (and EY) schedules are less competitive, serving perhaps the same amount of destinations but with far less frequencies to many destinations. This has definitely taken a toll on their business travelers who were "forced" to go the EK route. But new planes could well change this in QR's favor in the future, as long as the organization is capable to "absorb" the massive growth planned for the future. This is the main threat that I see for all the Middle Eastern airlines.

Does all of QR long haul fleet have PTV's now?

I flew Singapore - Doha - Cairo - Doha - Singapore and on the flight to/from Singapore on a A332, no PTV's were available.

Also on flights to Colombo, what sort of aircraft do they use?

Update:

Quote:
QATAR Airways has upgraded the aircraft on its Doha-Kuala Lumpur-Bali route to an Airbus A330 offering passengers in every seat a fully interactive audio and video entertainment system.

All 10 weekly services between Doha and the Malaysian capital will be served with the long-range aircraft, non-stop. The aircraft will also operate on all four weekly flights on the Kuala Lumpur-Bali sector, a route launched in March.
Qatar Airways launched flights to Malaysia in December 2001 with three flights a week and progressively increased capacity to the current frequency of 10 services.

The Doha-Kuala Lumpur route had been operated with an Airbus A300, which is gradually being phased out of the airline’s fleet. Qatar Airways is now using two aircraft types on the route - an A330-200 featuring 22 business class seats and 259 in economy, as well as an A330-300 with 30 business class seats and 275 in economy.
The upgraded A330s feature up to 53 more seats than the A300.

Sad to see that the A300s are going out of the fleet, and that KUL will finally get to see a new QR A332.

There has been talks by the press and some Qatari govenment officials for a direct airlink with Sao Paulo, Brazil by mid-January 2008. So, far it is just speculation. Melbourne is definetly on the list for next year, perhaps even late this year.

I would expect several ultra-long haul routes from DOH next year including GRU and MEL.

I agree... for a number of reasons...

MEL has been on the drawing board since 2003, so the business plan supporting the service is in place.
Also, with EY launching both SYD and BNE, QR would be keen to get into MEL, especially before EK introduces the A380.

This will give QR time to introduce its superior product, and get some "converts" on its services.

6thfreedom,

I hope for MEL sake that QR does get their act together and gets in there a.s.a.p.

However, I have this suspicion that the longer they leave it to introduce their flights, the more chance that SYD will become the first Australian destination. I am not sure what the bilateral actually states, whether SYD can be served before any other port, or if it is simply a time frame thing, such as SYD cannot be served until January 2008 as an example, but I find it intriguing that they haven't already started MEL.

EK certainly showed that MEL can be a fine first port in Australia and I believe it would be the same for QR, but these constant delays by QR would appear to cast doubts on their true intentions.
