JAT "gets" Rothschild - Privatization By Year End

Sat Sep 08, 2007 3:33 am

The Serbian Government has selected the US Consulting Company - Rothschild, to help in the privatization of JU.

Rothschild is joined by Clyde & Co, Aviation Economics as well as Citadel in this deal, that will nett them over a million Euro +.

The consultancy lists British Mediterranean, Alitalia, Fraport, TAP Portugal and BAA as its most recent clients.

Government's spokesperson said that Rothschild gave a better proposal over its rival BNP Paribas. It is widely expected that JU will be privatized by the end of the year.

Just because the Serbian government has hired consultants is no guarantee a sale, or interest in a sale with be forthcoming from anyone.

Just wanted to clarify the obvious. Interest wise, officially presented by Aeroflot and Icelandair so far.

Well, first Rotschild should learn about Velja's needs, dreams and wishes and take a very good care that those are met  Wink

Honestly, they didn't need Rotschild or any other consultants. What JAT needs are cleaners to clean up the mess that was piled up for decades.

Just call them trash collectors! Big grin

It'll be interesting to see the eventual outcome, either way JU needs to be put out of its misery. I'm sure that whoever gets JU eventually, will pay peanuts for it - I'd give it away!

There are various levels of interest... Look at Alitalia... some 10 parties bid on the airline however at the end ultimately interest turned out to be zero.
Just because there might be some parties that are willing to look at JATs books and sign non disclosure agreements does not mean a people are really willing to spend money and execute a final contract.

Not to put JAT or Serbia down, however the airline is rather meaningless when it comes to the bigger airline picture on the European continent. I suspect Serbia would be served adequately by other carriers if JAT were to disappear for good.
If it ever enters the EU, could maybe become a base for Ryanair with significantly more service then it ever receives today.  Smile

You are absolutely right. Right now, Aeroflot shows some interest, but it remains a mystery to me what will they do with JAT. It just doesn't fit into Aeroflot. I don't believe they will make some kind of political decision because those days are long gone, too.

You are right and wrong here. Of course, position of JAT in global European picture is meaningless now, but there is a certain potential that can be used in the future.

Well, I hope Serbia will become a part of EU.  Smile Hmmm, I'm not sure about Ryanair base. First, Belgrade is configured as an old-fashioned European hub. How big or small it will be in the future, time will tell, but it is definitely not something Ryanair would be interested in. Anyway, Ryanair could find another Serbian airport as very useful. It is Nis, some 250 km south of Belgrade, close to Bulgaria, FYR Macedonia and some ski resorts that are becoming more and more popular among British tourists. Airport is small, cute, with not much traffic and, as such, ideal for Ryanair  Smile

Yes! Hanging onto an organization that has "gangrene all over" is the dumbest move, in any country and situation: JU is no exception. Yes JAT was once a "glorious" airline and yes I too miss those days, but hey, those days are gone, the world has changed, JAT has changed, people need to get over it. What we need in Serbia is a small, dynamic, modern airline, equipped with mainly 70-100 seaters and with perhaps 3 - 150 seat airliners, serving the profitable European gateways. And who knows, in a few years - and only if numbers speak for themselves, get bigger planes, go intercontinental, go to Mars even - but do it for commercial reasons - for profit and not for pride.

Batajnica! Barely 10 km away from Nikola Tesla International, this military airport has two parallel runways and will be converted for dual (civil/military) use, as was announced by the Defense Minister Sutanovac this afternoon, and reported by B92.

Nah, we have rakija! Big grin (Strong Serbian drink made from plums and frequently used for disinfection and healing by the elderly)

Same as with AZ, strong unions, national pride and also a cash-cow for the government who is not ready to pull the plug. Actually when I think of it, JU is not costing the government anything really?!
