SAS Nonstop To DXB

Mon Sep 10, 2007 9:42 pm

Quote:
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is to launch a three times a week, non-stop service from Dubai to Copenhagen from November 1. The service, the first to directly link the UAE with Scandinavia, will operate throughout the winter months until the end of March next year. Flight SK962 will depart Dubai every Monday, Thursday and Sunday at 10am, with SK961 returning every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 9.05pm.

Three times weekly, but anyone know what equipment they will be using?

I think their A333 does have the legs to do it - why do they not use one of those instead? More efficient over the shorter route than the A343 i would have thought.

Because their 333s are busy flying their daily CPH-EWR, CPH-IAD, ARN-ORD and ARN-EWR routes and it's therefor easier and probably better to use a 343 due to scheduling reasons, although the 333 is isolated a better aircraft for the route.

Not all of SAS 330/340 pilots are certified on both planes and they therefore try to use the same type of plane on a specific route.

Isn't the 330/340 cockpit identical? ( besides ofcourse the fact that a screen will tell you that there are 4 engines on the 340 and 2 on the 330..  Smile )

Is this a only seasonal service? Perhaps, I am misunderstanding the statement? It seems to me that SK would offer CPH-DXB throughout the year.

Yes it's identical, but you still need a certificate for each type as it's not the same aircraft

If SK have the rights to fly CPH-DXB, that can only mean that EK will finally be able to fly to CPH, right?

EK have been able to fly to CPH for a long time and can start a route whenever they want. It was themself that cancelled to route after it was announced due to several reason, including the cartoons

As SAS don't have any spare longhaul equipment, anyone knows what routes they will close?

As far as I know they are closing the eveing flight to EWR from CPH.

Apparently SK and EK has entered into some kind of cooperation so SK can sell connecting flights on EK at better prices than buying a flight CPH-DXB and then another flight. This could indicate that the route might be extended after the winterseason. At least it would be logic to do so if it becomes a success, right? But then again this is SK!!!!!

There are millions of other ways for SK to loose money than opening up OSL-EWR.
The equipment SK has today appears to big for a daily flight. and besides they just down have the aircraft available

Are any of SKs 737-700 or -800s the higher gross weight version as they could just about manage CPH-DXB.

This route is operated by SAS Intercont. since all destinations outside Europe is their territory. All scheduled destinations, that is. The seasonal evening flight CPH-EWR operates in the summer season, only, and will be replaced by the winter-season CPH-DXB. Therefore the A343. Our A333's are actually overworked for the time being.

I know that from my hometown...

SAS are using/or have used 737-800 to Beirut & Damascus (charter)
and Cairo from ARN. But so far as DXB? I do not think so.

ARN - DXB 2585 nm
ARN - CAI 1855 nm

I find it embarrassing for CO to fly directly to OSL and SK does not. It can obviously be done in a profitable manner.
