Turkish Airlines: Star Alliance

Tue Sep 11, 2007 6:39 pm

Does any one have news concerning when Turkish Airlines will officially enter the Star Alliance? I thought it was to occur in 2007 following the agreement signed last year. Any updates would be appreciated.

my impression was not before April 2008 , but I dont think an exact date has yet been set .

IIRC there is a list ( not publicly available AFAIK ) of 50-60 "star alliance requirements" which must be met before actual membership becomes effective and the actual commencement date depends on all these being completed

End of Q1 2008.

TK's agreements with LH and OS are already in effect though.

Why did they choose Star over One World? They should have considered joining One World.

Doesn't TK codeshare with AA on transatlantic flights? I think they still do.

We always get 12 points from Germany... But only rarely from the UK  Smile

Yes, they still do. It will end by the summer 2008 schedule I believe...

I don't know about handling but codesharing yes.. Its been quite a while now.. They also have agreements in terms of frequent flier miles....

Could be something to do with the ''guest workers'' voting for their own country LOL....

they are code-sharing with LH on following routes:

IST-FRA 6xdaily
IST-MUC 5xdaily
IST-DUS 3xdaily
ADB-MUC 2xdaily
ESB-MUC 2xdaily

and also on IST-VIE with OS...

Well, in all honesty, one could say they chose Star over SkyTeam, not over One World.

TK's long haul network best suits Star, that is, TK will benefit from substantial traffic increase from its already existing routes.

THY technically is a full Star member since last Decembers induction ceremony in Istanbul.

As mentioned they already have begun cooperation's with Austria and Lufthansa with the remainder of the network during the coming winter and into early 2008. Majority of work is centered on IT and back office harmonization.

TK spent 2 years reviewing and negotiating with all 3 alliances. Star however by far provided the greatest benefits particularly with revenue potential and providing prominence for the IST hub.

1. Company must have at least one aircraft.
2. Aircraft must be airworthy.
3. Aircraft must be on a regular routing.
4. Aircraft must belong to an airline.
5. Airline should be willing to belong to an alliance.
6. Once above items are met-begin *alliance membership processes.

I don't know their status of joining but they signed an agreement (don't ask me what kind of agreement) with Lufthansa very recently

Since the end of may they also operate out of the LH/A* Terminal at MUC..... took one of the first flights out of Terminal 2 with TK.... have to say it was more than a pleasant flight experience. Couldn't have been better with LH which was twice the price.

Agreed.. I would also like to see an A 330 in *A colors too.. I think one B 737-800 should also be painted as they are TKs real workhorses and covers more destinations than an A 330 does......

on a related SA topic....what date does Air China & Shanghai Airlines officially join SA? I know it is before TK. I know they already code-share with many SA members... but the miles accumulated are not "elite" qualifying.

interestingly enough someone pointed out these links from the UA website earlier today in another post

http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,51777,00.html

"Shanghai Airlines is scheduled to join Star Alliance on December 12, 2007."

this is the first time I have seen a definite date mentioned on any of the *A airlines websites
