'85 O'Hare OAG Flight Schedule With Readable Chart

Wed Sep 12, 2007 6:36 am

Hey everyone,

Here is the complete flight schedule for all airlines serving O'Hare in December of 1985 other than AA and UA, the traditional O'Hare hub carriers.

This was to satisfy my own curiosity about which airlines had good sized operations at O'Hare during that time. The results are amazing so enjoy!

And please comment, ask questions, or just keep the conversation going, It was hard work and I want to see it pay off.

Have Fun! Please read the below information on how to access the file.

TWA1985

This is an update/ New Post that will correct the unreadable format of my previous post.

Just go to this link...

http://www.box.net/shared/u359iar7vg

Then click on the name of the file and than "open," not download. Unless of course you want it on your computer permanently.

It is well worth it!

What an amazing document. Thanks so much for it. Some things stand out:

* How many flights by three carriers from ORD-MSP, and being so close in departures and arrivals

* Meals on just about every flight

* Many carriers no longer in existence (Peoples Express).

* Dominant market service (e.g., PIT-ORD by USAir) and now with regionals

Question: weren't there any nonstops to London or Paris back then? A lot of Mexican market flights are shown, but no European ones. Just curious.

Sure-- but he's quoting schedules from the N Amer OAG, which doesn't show such flights.

Ssides,

I know that since AA and UA had hubs in Chicago at the time they would have tons of flights at ORD- much like today. What I was interested in was the other airlines and how big of an operation they had going in Chicago. Because unlike today, where airlines only fly to Chicago from two or three of their own hub cities, many airlines had pretty good sized operations here. Sorry for the confusion.

AA and UA did. The post stated "other than AA".
AA and UA were the big dogs in 85 and 86 at ORD as they are today.

Anyone else? This took way too long to just fade away in less than 24 hours. There is some interesting stuff here... take a look.

I really enjoyed reading it - I apologize for not posting a comment.

I particularly liked seeing the widebodies in red!

Very cool, thanks for the effort. Quick question: did the NW flights to TPA not also change on Dec 18? Most of the rest of the destinations have schedule changes then, and I'm pretty certain 750/751 switched to a DC10 for one more season 85/86.

What's with the Eastern flights leaving for LA and EWR in the middle of the night (was this their cargo specials?)

Pretty funny to look back and see how much has changed. Almost comical to see such things as PA's 747 ORD-DTW or NW's 747 ORD-MSP. After the merger with "Herman" NW really slashed their ORD presence.
EA still had their little MCI mini-hub going. Used A-300's to the West Coast from ORD to try to make some money on the route against the likes of AA/CO/TW/UA.

Fun to see the likes of BN,EA,PA,PI,TW. Really miss them.

This is fascinating. I even found a couple of Eastern and Delta flights I took around that time period.

It would have been cool to see what AA and UA had going on as well as the International stuff but that would have been a real monster to put together I'm sure.

Thanks TWA!

Indio66,

The late night Eastern A-300's to EWR and LAX in the middle of the night were part of Eastern's "Moonlight Special" operation where they carried cargo at night (as you said) and also carried passengers for very low fares with no-frill service. At that time most of the Moonlight flights were routed through Houston but in 1987 Eastern moved the operation up to ORD, but it was short lived due to noise complaints.

3201,

NW 750/751 did not show an upgrade to a DC-10, maybe you are thinking of MKE service which utilized a DC-10 to TPA for a short time each winter.

ImperialEagle,

You are right about NW after the RC merger. I have a timetable from early March, 1987-- only months after the merger and the NW service out of ORD (Now this in only out of memory since I don't have the timetable in front of me) was to MSP, DTW, MEM, BOS, SEA, ICT, NRT, and mabe one or two others. But all the domestic widebodies were done by that point. Really kind of sad actually. I looked at the schedule for Northwest Orient from one month before the merger and just before the "Orient" part of the name was dropped and service was very similar to what it was like in my 1985 OAG document with widebody flights still flying in and out of ORD. Like I said- Very Sad.

Thanks for all the replies,

3201,

You may also be thinking of NW 719 from ORD-MIA which operated with DC-10's. Just a thought, but who know... Maybe the OAG was wrong or had a misprint (Which was not unheard of).

The winter widebodies to TPA varied from year-to-year, but I really thought the 85/86 winter was the year that MKE, ORD, and DTW were all DC10 and MSP was 747, along with a 757 from BOS and a 72S from CLE. I could be off by a year, maybe it was 84/85.

AA767Lover,

I will be happy to answer your JFK question. Now please know that I have several OAG's from 1/85, 12/85, 9/86, and 11/88.

3201,

I will take a look at the other two OAG's from 1/85 and 9/86 to see if there is DC-10 service from ORD to TPA. Just give me untill tomorow since I am not at home right now.

Great job on the chart. I like how you put the widebodies in red. It really goes to show how great things were back then. Large selection of nonstop service, meals on board, defunct airlines, and plenty of widebodies (and tri-jets)  Smile

Makes you wish you can go back to that era; given by how much things have changed, for the worse.

If I wasn't clear i meant from the same schedule from ORD. I just wanted to see where UA flew nonstop and with what equipment and compare it to my flying schedule of today.

I will gladly look up the info you requested. Let be just be sure I am understadning you clearly. You just want a list of destinations served and equipment, correct. Not the actual times, meals, frequencies, etc?

Me thinks Chicago-O'hare has many more nonstop destinations today than it did in 1985.

Thanks for your help! I meant I would like to see exactly what you did with the other airlines in the chart but showing just United's info! And if it isn't too much trouble AA's! But I would be more than happy just to see UA's operating schedule out of ORD in 1985!

Sounds like a good bet. The 5/85 N Amer OAG shows nonstops to ORD from 161 airports, so the total couldn't have been much more than 170. Should be well over 200 now.

Sure, from UA and AA. Me thinks you'll have a hard time finding a selection of 3-5 carriers flying mainline equipment on a many routes today.  Wink

Now the options are very limited. Sorry if the post was not more clear.

I'm sure one thing that will stick out is the amount of DC-10's on the domestic runs back then. Beats the handful of 763 & 772 flights from ORD today.

Overall probably..however, dont forget thanks to slots a lot of cities lost service to ORD in the 1980s..like:

Terre Haute, IN
Bloomington, IN
Layfette, IN
Muncie, IN
Decatur, IL
Sterling Rock Falls, IL
Danville, IL
Matoon/Charleston, IL
Quincy, IL
Galesburgh, IL
Rockford, IL
Waterloo, IA
Sioux City, IA
Burlington, IA
Oshkosh, WI
Eau Claire, WI
Rhinelander, WI
Ironwood, WI
Benton Harbor, MI
Muskeagon, MI
Battle Creek, MI
Iron Mountain, MI
Escanaba, MI
Youngstown, OH
Erie, PA

There are probably more but I cant remember then all

It gets worse if you look at an OAG from the 1970s when places like Marshalltown, IA Marshfield, WI and Macomb, IL had flights to ORD on Cessna 402s or Beech 99s
