A380 @ YYZ... How Soon?

Fri Sep 14, 2007 6:05 am

Now obviously the A380 will come to Toronto eventually but how long will it take?
We probably have the best chance of getting an A380 from AF, EK or LH. AF operates a 744 or A343 into YYZ daily and LH operates an A346 daily. It just doesn't seem we have the justification for such a huge plane. Emirates will probably continue with the B773(ER) or B772(ER). So how long after the last delivery of the A380 to AF, LH, and EK can I expect to see an A380 in YYZ? Any estimates would be great.

No estimates. LH flies the 346 here and EK a 773.

Nobody even flies their largest aircraft here. There are surprisingly few 777s. The tendency of several carriers is to go for multiple frequencies rather than fly a single 747. BA, for example, has three daily flights. Air Canada operates five flights to London, two to FRA.

The best bet is probably KE during the summer months but even that is unlikely.

Why Emirates getting 45 A380, is it out of the realm of possibility, that YYZ could get service?

I'd put my guess on LH or AF doing a promotion flight to YYZ sometime after they get their A380's

Well they are only starting service next month. Their principal market from Toronto will likely be India and Pakistan. There isn't much demand for the Gulf region. So their ability to upgauge to a 380 will depend on the growth of the overall market juxtaposed against the increase in direct flights to India and to the Gulf. If KU, QR, etc join Jet, possiubly Kingfisher, it's going to become a pretty crowded and fragmented market.

YUL will likely see 380 sked service (and for that latter, an initial courtesy visit) long before YYZ. Courtesy of AF.

YYZ's likely best oppty for ANY 380 service before 2015 is IF BA orders the 380. That's a big "if", We'll find out in October. Maybe.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

YYZ can have the following 777 on any given day. 2 BA (when it is three a 767 gets added), 1 KLM, 1 PIA, 1 Air India. BA and KLM sometimes uses 747-400's. that doesn't include AC's 777. LF flies the A340-600 as already been stated. LF will add the A340-300 to Duesseldorf. AF either a A340 or 747-400 in the summer. Long story short I don't see an A380 on regular service here anytime soon. Hopefully we will see one on a familiarization or other type of tour. There are two gates only in the new Terminal 1 to accomodate the A380 and I believe one in Terminal 3. LF uses Terminal 1. BA, AF use Terminal 3.

It would seem to me that the only markets that are likely to be upgraded to A380 are existing 747-400 routes. That would primarily be long haul, heavy traffic markets which happen to be mostly North America-Asia and Europe-Asia at present.

I suspect YVR-Asia will see the A380 before YYZ in Canada. YUL-CDG is an anomoly.

in my opinion the first carrier to put the A380 the in YYZ, will be able to offer lower prices along the publicity of a totally new and impressive plane ..BA would and LH, AI? would have an easy task. just an opinion.

cheers

KLM has a daily 744 flight to YYZ and recently added a 5x/week 772 to this schedule.

Airlines don't generally offer lower fares for the type of aircraft they run. The tendency is to charge the most that they can within the framework of their business philosophy. While they might have seat sales or other promotions for low-season travel, they wouldn't change their year round pricing just for a few routes. They would only alter it if the achieve lower costs across their system.

If Cathay Pacific does decide to buy the A380-800, then YYZ will be a leading candidate to get CX A388 service, mostly because of the very large Hong Kong expatriate community in the Toronto area.

The new A380 gates just opened a few months ago. I'm agreeing that CX would be our best bet if/when they order any A388. I'm seriously doubting that EK will use it here, at least for a while, and anyone else might only use it for summer runs (I'm thinking LH). It is a good sign that EK has finally started service here. I wonder if Virgin will ever come back. They might also be a good A388 summer candidate (perhaps once or twice a week with A388 and the rest with A340/744)

I don't think it's that 'obvious'....

Just because there is a large community here proves nothing. First, CX has to implement its plan to go double daily. Right now, they have about 250 seats a day in the market. There can also be good reasons to stick with a double daily service with smaller aircraft, no matter which airline we are talking about. Any foreign carrier here is catering to more than one destination overseas. They are all selling beyond their hub and gateway.

not a chance the A346 they fly now is 66/279 or 72/263 and its big enough, the 747 they use to fly was 16 64 310 and not so full....so a 380 on top of two AC flights to FRA on top of one LH flight to DUS...does not seem likely at all...and there are only 15....so mostly JFK, far east, etc..
