Reno Air Races Off To A Bad Start

Fri Sep 14, 2007 1:15 pm

There have been two fatal crashes at Reno in the first three days of the race. The first was a biplane that stalled after takeoff, and the second was the pilot of an L-39 Albatross who may have gotten caught in the wake of the jet ahead of him, according to officials. Thursday afternoon's competitions were cancelled, but are expected to resume tomorrow.,2933,296742,00.html

Very sad news and I hope this does not affect future races in any way.  Sad

Including these two crashes, there have only been 17 fatal crashes in the 44 years of the race. It is unfortunate that the number of deaths at the race increased by more than 10% in one year.

This thread is different than this one: First Crash Of Reno Air Races 2007 (by SlamClick Sep 4 2007 in Civil Aviation)
That crash had no fatalities, and this thread is to discuss the two that have occurred since then.
I love ASO!

Another accident reported here. Some injuries on the ground as well, apparently.

When I first saw this I read it as "Reno Air - races off to a bad start." Thought there was some fool trying to resurrect the old Reno Air.  Smile

really sad to hear about these three lives lost already this year. my thoughs are with the familys of all those killed and injured in these accidents and i hope that no more damage is done to any property or people this year. the reno air race is by far my favorite event of the year every year, and there is a great emergency response team there, led by the Cheif of the Reno Fire Dept named Chuc Lowden, who is a great guy and really knows his stuff. hopefully, no more emergency response is needed and we have some good, safe races!

Three in three days.

This is a bad start! My thoughts are with the families of those killed and injured. I hope there not calls to end such a wonderful event!

I'm up here now and hoping for a couple days of uneventful racing after what has gone on in the last couple of days. It's always sad when people lose their lives in things like this, but they know what they are doing and enjoy doing it. Jason was real lucky this morning and definately had someone watching over him bearing in mind what happened out there. We can only hope that things keep going in his favor and he continues to recover, and of course our hearts go out to the friends and families of those who weren't as fortunate.
