Such a shame.

I'm assuming (and I hope I'm wrong) that because none of his family, or himself have come forward and said "I'm fine" that he was onboard

Four feared dead, no names released by police, although McRae's agent apparently confirmed his death.

Heard about the crash on the 6pm news - apparently him and his 5 year old son were both killed.

RIP to all on board, a very tragic event.

He was a great driver who will be sorely missed by all in the rally industry.

Terrible news. I wonder if his immediate family were the other passengers.

I noticed that the photo of the helicopter in the thread starter was taken at MME. I used to live near there and regularly saw a rally-style Ford Focus with (Colin?) McRae titles in the back windows. Actually, maybe it was not Colin McRae - did he or maybe his brother/cousin have some association with the north-east of England too?

I'm sure ProDrive used to have a factory around that area, maybe somebody in the area could confirm this?

Since the thread was posted the BBC article has been changed to say that he is feared dead, whereas they weren't so specific earlier. Coupled with the other link, I would be suprised if the news was wrong.

RIP Colin McCrash

RIP Colin. Ironic how he could have been killed dozens of times in his line of work and he goes out taking a routine helicopter ride..very unfortunate.

I understand that he thought of this as a jokey name and so I intended it to be in the same vein. It was a reference to his driving style - right on the limits, and often beyond. But I just realised that it could be seen as poor taste regarding his helicopter accident.

25 wins in his 30-year career and in 1995 he became the first British World Champion as well as the youngest.

This is awful news, I greatly admired Colin McRae and had a lot of time for the guy.

When he was doing well in WRC I was at the age where I was becoming interested in things like that and for a long time he was my "hero". I had all of his rallying games and dreamt of being like him one day . He also started my long standing love affair with Subaru, he made me love the cars to the point of me annoying my Dad until he chose one. It's such a shame and my thoughts are with his family. If reports are true, it's even more tragic that his son was involved.

It's kinda the end of an era, British Rally drivers are few and far between and the two most prominent ones from my era were the late Richard Burns and Colin. Such a shame

Such sad news, I was a massive fan of him when I was a kid, as it was when he won the championship. I was hoping that this would all turn out OK and that he wasn't onboard but from the sounds of it he was. My condolences to his family and friends, he'll be very greatly missed.

Looks like it is official now, the site has been updated with some details of the crash.

From the site:
Mr Colin McRae (39) of Jerviswood House and his son Johnny Gavin McRae, aged 5.

Ben Porcelli (6), of Cleghorn Road, Lanark, who had been over playing with Johnny, and family friend Graeme Duncan (37), of L’Ile Degaillot, Faycelles, France.

Chief Superintendent Tim Love, Divisional Commander, South Lanarkshire Division, said today:

“We believe that the group were just returning from a visit to the nearby village of Quarter around 1605 hours yesterday, when it appears that the helicopter got into difficulty and crashed within the grounds of Mr McRae’s family home.

Wow. Shocking. I saw a news piece yesterday about the crash but it said that it wasn't thought that McRae was onboard. Am rather surprised and saddened to see this news come out. BBC have changed their story now too.

For British rallying to lose Burns and McRae so early in their lives is extremely sad indeed.

Markko Martin is still very much alive, and it was Michael Park who was Martin's co-driver who perished. It hasn't been a good decade for current/former Subaru drivers.

Very tragic news, RIP to all who were on board! Colin was one of the best, if not the best rally driver ever! His car control & commitment to the stages he was driving were unbelievable, you had to see it to believe it & I had the pleasure of spending many a freezing hour in either a welsh forest or keilder forest watching him go through! It's hard to imagine what his family is going through! It must be bad enough to lose one member of the family but for his 5 year old son to be another of the victim's is truly tragic! There will never be another like Colin!
I believe Colin used to own a EC120 didn't he & his brother Alister has a R44? Does anybody know which one's these are? I know he used to have a Ce525 N525CM c/n 525-0093 but this was sold a couple of year's ago.

It appears that the boss of Prodrive, Dave Richards and his wife have been involved in a helicopter crash today, no fatalities though.
