MAS Order By End Of 07 - Up To 110 Planes

Tue Sep 18, 2007 9:44 pm

This just hit the wires:

HONG KONG -(Dow Jones)- Malaysian Airline System Bhd. (3786.KU) will make a decision on ordering more than 100 jets by December, and also hopes to sign a code-share agreement with a Chinese partner soon, Managing Director Idris Jala said Tuesday.

....

Airbus and Boeing have both submitted proposals to supply as many as 55 narrow-body jets to Malaysian Airline, Idris said, without specifying the aircraft models.

Malaysian Airline will soon ask Airbus and Boeing to submit proposals for a similar number of longhaul wide-body jets....

The carrier said in May it was considering purchases of up to 110 aircraft, part of a major expansion plan for growth amid increasing regional competition.

Nice to see MAS (finally) in shape to talk about ordering planes again. However, this has the "aeroflot" feel about it... all talk and no checkbook to be seen.

What types do they fly now?

It would certainly be great news for either company to land this large order.

Can it be save to think that this will be CZ since they have both an extensive codeshare agreement with KL?

Wiki says they plan to phase out their 734 fleet by 2014, so they're unlikely to want to wait for the 737RS/A320RS.

They are ordering additional 747-8Fs, so that could favor a 747-8I order as MH is still working out compensation with Airbus over the delay of their six leased A388s.

On the flip side, Airbus can package some nice A320/A330/A350 terms into a decision by MH to not only keep the A388s, but to add to them.

Could go either way, at this point, I imagine.

Who ? I was not aware that Malaysian Airlines was in the market for the 748F

Its odd that neither Airbus or Malaysian Airlines have commented on the progress of negotiations. I find it even more odd as Malaysian Airlines was to be among the first airlines to operate the A380 after, SQ,QF and EK.

If I had to speculate I would say that Airbus has the lead with this order. The A330 could be offered as a interim measure, until the arrival of the A350WXB.

A350-800 would replace the A332's
A350-900 would replace the A333/772
A350-1000 would replace the 744

I remember when a huge order for A320s and A340-600s was just weeks away...  Yeah sure

I'll believe this big order when it's signed. (And maybe not then.)

Well, I know some people who work at MH in KUL, and from what I'm hearing, it wouldn't surprise me to see A35X, 77W, and 748i in the MH fleet.
