VS Expands Premium Economy On LHR B747's

Tue Sep 18, 2007 11:52 pm

Virgin has announced that they will increase the number of seats in it's Premium economy B744 LHR based aircraft from 32 to 64 seats. The result will be an increase of 10% in Premium Economy Capacity across the fleet. After last years upgrade of the product, Virgin says bookings jumped 20%, so they will take space from existing economy cabins for the expansion.

I will say that while the aircraft I was on in July didn't have the new PE seats, I definetly noticed a difference in the service. I've heard both positive and negative things but my experience was pretty positive. As much as I like the upper deck on the 744, it would have been nice to get the 346 and try out the new PE seats.

Obviously VS is getting a lot of positive feedback if they're going to remove more Y for the slightly higher yielding W...

Actually the whole Upper Deck will be ALL upper class making it a total of 54 upper class, 64 Premium and 210 economy seats, Does anyone know when will they start installing the new seats?

The new configuration is actually J54/W62/Y228. The first aircraft is being re-fitted now and should be in service before the end of the month.

This is good news. The new premium economy is a great product. In fact, on a non-overnight flight, its hard to justify the Upper Class over the PE.

Excellent. PE on Virgin is my favourite way to fly.

I agree. If I had the money to fly VS LAX-LHR, I'd fly out in J and back in Y+. But it's so expensive, I end up flying another carrier to LGW via a different gateway instead.

This is bad if you are flying in Y. My flight to SFO in a few weeks has this new "configuration 4" meaning where as before I had a middle seat free between the A and C seats, when the configuration changed about a month ago the middle seat immediately got filled. Much less chance of a free middle seat now. On the business side for VS it is a good move though and I suppose could lead to more op-ups.

I flew the new PE product from ORD to LHR on a A340-31X. I can not say enough positive things about it.

- The seats were very spacious and comfy, and had a great foot rest that extends from the seat in front of you.

- They gave a great amenities kit at the beginning of the flight.

- The meal service and wine was exceptional (I had the bangers and mash and a great red).

- The only portion that could be improved was the IFE. The flight had the near-AVOD, which was great for all intents and purposes, but I would have liked to see their true AVOD.
The only way to fly is by the seat of your pants...

This is doomed to fail.

VS's premium economy is rubbish.

United offer the same service for Y class prices to it's gold card holders.

As VS is losing tons of money (it's profits have shrunk 80%), it's hoping the sexy name will attract lots of passengers to spend an extra £200 on a seat they could get on AA / UA / US for free, just because the plane is silver and the seat is a cheap plastic red.

Given the UK economy is on the edge, people are looking to save not spend... these seats will go empty.
In the US people dont care the name of the airline and expect foreign airlines to be worse than US airlines.. they wont pay more for VS.. just because some guy who might look like Santa says so.

result... empty seats, Y will fill up quicker, and VS will be an expensive Y class airline with lots of empty seats upstairs...

this wont last beyond the 2008 "london bonus" season.
So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

UA does not offer a Premium Economy product, they have E+ (which is a few more inches of legroom). It does not compare to VS' product in the slightest (different seat, meals, pitch, etc). Most of the evidence I have seen shows that airlines that have a distinctive Premium Economy product (BA, NZ, etc) percentage wise are making a good profit/yield from it. They are making money, whereas E+ is a smart gimmick by UA to keep its gold card holders happy without having to do anything other than give them a few more inches (no different meals, seats, drinks, etc.).

It's is NOT the same. The Economy Plus offered on UA features only 35" pitch and the seat width is exactly the same as regular coach seat.

Yeah, Virgin's premium economy is rubbish and is performing poorly for the airline... exactly why they are expanding the product.

Have you flown on it by any chance? Have you flown on UA's Y+?

StarGoldLhr

Did you use to post under another name? You remind me of a poster that had absolutely nothing good or positive to say about VS and as a matter of fact used every opportunity to post negative things about them. What was mind boggling was that the poster had never flown VS.

As one poster already asked. Have you ever flown on VS? Have you sampled their premium economy product.

Personally I don't care for premium. Now their Upprer Class.... Different kettle of fish altogether. I'll take this anytime

I flew on VS PE in August last year to DXB on an A340 and have to say it was excellent. The whole experience is great.

So good in fact, I am heading to SYD at the end of October and I am flying VS in PE.

Really? Now I only really fly between JFK/EWR and LHR, but every flight I've been on the W cabin has been full. I would ask to see your facts, as VS obviously thinks it's performing well if they're increasing W capacity.

Would that be me? It is not exactly rocket science to work out that the Virgin style is not to everyone's liking. StarGoldLhr is entitled to his opinion, even if it rocks the VS fans' boat.

That's not me. Flown them and hated the experiences so much that I stay well clear of them now and do not comment on current standards. Give me BA World Traveller any day over VS Upper Class.

I haven't yet flown VS, but I'll be flying it EWR-LHR on 30th Jan. Hopefully it'll be a little better than Boring Airline. And I think it's presently scheduled to be the 346. I've flown the 345 (with EY) and that was great.

If you're Flying Club Gold, I agree. But otherwise, Upper Class is exciting for the lounge access, too.

The trouble is that StarGoldLhr's "opinion" had some factual problems -- VS's premium economy, which includes differentiated meal service and a wider seat, is not the same as UA's extra legroom and nothing else in Economy Plus.
