Delta MD80 Service?

Wed Sep 19, 2007 8:49 pm

It was my understanding Delta had MD83 to 90 , but this weekend I see several MD80's on routes and they are listed as MD8X? Also when you go to Delta.com to book, they show no First Class on these birds. Can anyone help me understand where these birds are coming from? Example is 22 Sept DL0745 The web shows MD88 with no First and last night showed it as an MD80?

Those would be the MD-88's configured for Delta Shuttle flying featuring an all coach cabin with increased pitch.

Delta had several MD-83s, which were later converted to MD-88s. The MD-88s with no first class are the aircraft used on the Delta Shuttle. Often on weekends, they are used on flights other than the shuttle. Unless you had planned on first class, you will like it.

Actually to be specific the first few MDs delivered to DL were MD-82s and later converted to MD88s.

ah, you're right, they were 82s. My bad. I do remember they were the first 80s delivered. Can't remember the exact number though.

8. Ships 901 - 908. Ship 909+ were delivered as MD-88s.

In fact, Delta Ship 909 is the prototype MD-88!

What was involved in these conversions?

I believe it was just a cockpit upgrade and engine upgrade to the JT8D-219. With this, it earned itself an MD-88 certification. Before this, it was known as an MD-82 but it's certification actually said DC-9-82. The 88 is the only one to have the MD in it's cert.
