Lufthansa Cargo And DHL B777F Announcement

Wed Sep 19, 2007 9:42 pm

Deutsche Post and Lufthansa will tomorrow make an announcement of the joint venture company based in LEJ with a purchase of 11 B777-200F aircrafts.

This news available in German on: www.ftd.de

Daughter companies (of Deutsche Post and Lufthansa) DHL and Lufthansa Cargo will own equal 50% share of the new company.

DHL is today using Lufthansa Cargo to destinations in the Near and Far East and in USA. This joint venture will be used to cover these routes and obviously several others. Lufthansa Cargo is following DHL Leipzig move and positioning some M1F's to there in October when DHL moves from CGN to LEJ. This will also see the end of Lufthansa Cargo M1F's operating to CGN.

Finally, 777s with German regs. (I suppose they will get German regs.)

Nice boost for LEJ, shows that FRA is lacking capacity. I wonder which colour those planes will have.

So the marriage of LH and Boeing is still strong as it has been recently said by Scott Carlson.
I suppose this aircraft will get a D-registration. The company is based in Leipzig.
I just hope the new company will have a nice name and a good looking livery (at least better than DHL).
With that order goes anothe a.net myth that LH will only buy Airbus. Second Boeing order in a row  Wink

Excellent news! Not only for LH and ER, but especially for LEJ. That airport has potential for becoming a very important international hub in the future.

As nobody knows by now, how this new airline will be named, is there any chance that we see a rebirth of "German Cargo"?

LEJ and FRA always have neen something like matching twins. Both have a large rail terminal, the fur industry moved from the vicinity of that rail terminal in Leipzig to the same location in FRA after the war, both areas have / had a rfed light district.

Now things move back to LEJ, starting with an integrators hub. Take a look at an aerial picture of LEJ and see how much room they have there. I bet the FRA hub will be in LEJ in 25 years.

If Hesse gets the wrong coalition in the upcoming state election, it'll be in 10 years or sooner.

I fully understand that this is great news for LEJ, but to be honest, I would have preferred CGN or FRA as homebase.
The only factor in saying this is the trucking distance for our cargo ex AMS.

But also look at it this way: this move will create new jobs, and new jobs are desperately needed in many of the Eastern states. I could well see even a migration of people from states like Sachsen-Anhalt or Brandenburg to Leipzig in order to try to get a job for this new company.

You are absolutely right here!
I recall hearing unemployment-rates in Brandenburg were around 25% last year, so for the Eastern States it's great news.
LEJ seems to be growing big time at the moment.
My first statement was purely based on my job-related point of view. Personally I think LEJ is also a geographic better place to be compared with for example CGN.

I'll watch our internal website tomorrow and see if there is anything about the name. I fully expect some sort of story about the announcement and hopefully the name and maybe even the livery will be included. There's nothing posted so far, but that isn't surprising as I am sure they'll wait til it's public.

Doubtful, since these North America destinations the joint company from LH and ER will serve are most likely major hubs. I sincerely doubt the T7 will serve ILN, unless ABX Air decides to codeshare with them on transatlantic flights to LEJ.

Are these new 777-F or have they already been included in the "Unidentified" category? Could these 11 be the combination of unidentified orders for the type placed on 28 Feb and 5 April? 6 and 5 orders, respectively?

Just a guess here, but I think that blue and yellow will be in the mix. LH uses both and Deutsche Post uses yellow throughout its network (postal services, banking, all divisions of DHL).

I know, but they can use the name (on which they still have all rights) for the new airline.

And about the livery: at that time it was a unique sight on the airports, to see such colours. I loved it.

Well, today it looks too much like a late 70th to early 80th style, but perhaps they could design something similar in a more modern way.

A380Heavy and EMA747, yes they will be operating every weekday through EMA. unsure if they will operate LEJ - EMA - LEJ or LEJ - EMA - North America.

Quote:
Pending the granting of traffic rights, the new airline will gradually expand its route network from the summer schedule 2009. On weekdays, it will be serving Singapore, Bangkok, Dubai, Bombay, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Seoul, Nagoya, Almaty, East Midlands and Milan. At weekends, it will fly to Shanghai, Astana, Singapore, Bangkok, Sharjah, Hong Kong, Chicago and New York.

Fact Sheet about new airline from the press release of DPWN:

New cargo carrier

Corporate structure
· 50/50 joint venture between DHL Express and Lufthansa Cargo AG
· Private limited company (GmbH)
· Equity capital: 50m euros
· Company Head Office in Leipzig
Management
o Dr. Thomas Papke
o Thomas Pusch
· Probable three-digit number of employees
Network
· Start of flight operations planned for summer schedule 2009
· Transport of express shipments largely from and to Asia
· Transport of airfreight to Asia and USA
· Probable route network on weekdays:
Singapore, Bangkok, Dubai, Bombay, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Seoul,
Nagoya, Almaty, East Midlands, Milan
· Probable network at weekends: Shanghai, Astana, Singapore, Bangkok,
Sharjah, Hong Kong, Chicago, New York

Note these lines:
Transport of express shipments largely from and to Asia
Transport of airfreight to Asia and USA

What you can read from that is that Express (DHL) shipments will be flying with the new airline to Asia, while the 767's previouisly ordered by DHL will be doing the transatlantic runs with Express (DHL) Shipments. Who within the DPWN/DHL group will operate the 767's is still undecided.

So a T7 in ILN will most likely only be Ad hoc not scheduled.

Cheers

that would be a downgrade. LH presently flies to ILN with M11s. I am not sure if they still use the Gemini planes for traffic right reasons.

Remains to be seen anyhow what will happen to the LH M11s as about 5 or 6 are deployed for DHL business at the moment. De facto, this will be a LH cargo operation, the carrier will most likely not sell direect to freight forwarders and marketing of the capacity not used by DHL business will be through LCAG.

A GmbH with only 50 Million € paid up capital is not self sustainable, they need the backing of mama LH and papa DHL tooperate 11 T7s.

I agree, although I can't see them pulling a profit unless their business model includes selling off of any available capacity through the freight forwarders. And I also agree that LH Cargo will be the primary operators of the heavy lift 777s, and therefore, regularly scheduled.

They form a clean sheet company with low costs. Based in the East, they pay ossi wages, the flight crew will get less than the MD11 crews, They all have a low seniority which will affect the pay scales as well.

LCAG can play around with the new capacity which will give them growth potential with a risk sharing partner, without exposing them too much on the capital market. They have 50% of a new fleet to sell, use the M11 capacity for growth elsewhere and if that is not workable, an M11 freighter is fast selling asset for quite a while. They would get rid of the conversions first. .

LH Technik has a new customer with 11 T7s, a type on which they do 3rd party work already

It's a win win for all in the boat.

LH bought the name "German Wings" as the first airline wearing that name went bankrupt and is using it now for their low cost subsidiary.

Looks like it Columba, if they use Boeing's current customer codes.

With some more information on hand - this is an amazing coup LH has pulled off here.

They lease 11 brand new and fuel efficient T7Fs , form a new clean sheet company with the low costs of a start-up.

About 50% capacity of this lean operation are shared by a partner who previously shared capacity of 7 MD11s.

These 7 MD11s will go back into the LH Cargo main fleet, will be re-based from CGN to FRA (provided they find a solution to enable night flights).

They must have some confidentiallity in the market, to gobble up this additional capacity. On the other hand - the worst case scenario is that they have to sell off some of the MD11s, the worst performing comversions. With things working fine and going as planned, more T7Fs will join and gradually replace the MD11s.

Add 6 Jade Cargo 744Fs to that, with a cost base in China. joint marketing with all the little companies they have on the side, like Easy, LH Cargo Charter etc., we have a market force here that is matched in Europe only by AF/KL when they take Martinair in.

Respect.

Any idea who will be the lessor?

Will the aircraft be 777-230Fs ? With that order the LH group has had every Boeing in its fleet from 707 - 777.

Highly unlikely. It has been clearly stated that this is a leasing deal, and I doubt that the lessor wants to have a B777-200LRF as a -230F. To make things clear: it is a) likely that this deal will never appear as a Lufthansa order on Boeing´s book and b) it is not unlikely that these 777s won´t carry the D-registration.

So? Which one are they going to carry, then?

That's probably true, on second thought. Perhaps the new company will get a new Boeing customer code.

Huh?  biggrin  There are three negatives in the quote. Are you saying that it will or won't have a "D" registration when delivered? IIFC, it should, but please correct me. I'd be sort of disappointed if it didn't.
