New Spirit Livery Unveiling

Thu Sep 20, 2007 7:50 am

Just a heads up folks, Spirit will be unveiling a new livery next Tuesday (Sept. 29) at FLL - spotters beware. The new livery is a total departure from the current one, definitely a love it or hate it change. Look for other changed brand elements such as logos, uniforms, etc. to be unveiled over time.

finally an airline that goes through liveries as fast as they do money.....

Also consistent with their 6 months at a time strategy....

And folks say Delta changes liveries too often. Spirit has been using the "digital" livery for barely 5 years. I'm guessing this new livery goes hand in hand with their ULCC transformation?

When they changed to the "digital" livery, didn't they change that from blue to gray?

From white fuselage and blue labeling to gray/black with the intro of the airbii...except for their first 321 which got the old style.

Since this is "Spirit" Airlines, maybe the new livery will include:

"ghostly" white

or red, white and "boo"

or silver and "ghoul"

or something in a "passed-tel"

Hopefully it won't include a red tail like DL did. I like the paint scheme Spirit Airlines has right now.

Well, I do too but management does not think so. The livery they have is unique.

Well Red has been their liveries for some time, so expect it again. In addition to that, I would expect a shade of blue.

I think the statements here about their product are uninformed. Spirit's new airbus fleet is much nicer inside than Northwest's fleet (their DTW rival). The seats are slimline leather with adjustable winged leather headrests. I flew DTW - LGA and back last summer and was very impressed. Northwest's cabins are a joke by comparison. As for frequent flyer program stats, technology used for checkin & boarding passes...etc ...well ..Spirit is lacking by comparison. But the inflight product was great when I flew...

Description....

Multicolored Swirls with a Swirly multicolor S on the tail.

Hard to describe. I saw a photo and mock up but I do not have a copy.

I did not like it at all. The current livery is very professional looking in my opinion. The old one was a bit amateurish and the new one is just bad. The original was better then the new one. It reminded me of the S on the African/Asian carrier whos name escapes me with a couple of half circular swirls in alternating directions and colors on the fuselage. Spirit.com is on the rear bottom portion of the fuselage in medium sized letters. (Normal non swirly font)

Half the plane will be bare aluminum (similar to American), the other half will be painted. There is a $5 web surcharge for booking in the painted section, or $10 at checkin. Aluminum side is no charge.

Nonetheless I think their current livery is excellent (dont care for the White Spirit A321 though). The airline itself sucks though.

We'll see I guess....

Can we expect themed planes, maybe named after Spirits sale names?

Like, 'Spirit of Wild Billy Bob', etc.? With a big picture of wild billy bob on the tail holding a $10 sign?  duck

Honestly it does cross my mind...as much cost cutting that Spirit is doing and sucharging for everything, part of me (maybe 30%) actually believes it may be an all-aluminum fuselage scheme, no paint, simply because they want to save even more money. That was the first thing that crossed my mind when I saw this thread...'New Spirit Livery'.

If its not an aluminum scheme, i'd expect schemes similar to = US Airways / AirTran (with Spirit colors) / Virgin America (with Spirit Colors)

Am I the only one that hates the current scheme? I think it is the worst livery in the US. I really think airplane livery design should accentuate the lines of an aircraft. This one is choppy and looks like it is from 1985. The "steps" of the tail make it look like it is a giant lego set.

Absolutely nothing, as far as I can see: it's modern, it's stylish, and an attention grabber. My fear is that they will go to some hideous all white scheme with minimal lettering, or worse, something like AirTran's current scheme.  thumbsdown

You might be...along with management of the airline, if they have decided to change the livery, particularly so soon. No reason to change a great livery, so either 1) management just wants their stamp on the airline for their own ego's, 2) they are idiots or 3) they were presented with the best design ever that just could not be resisted. When/if the design comes out, cast your vote.

From the look of the women in the picture it would seem the airline has a few things to learn..LOL. Spirits current branding does everything to fight the graciousness of a modern airplane..smooth lines, roughed with rigid square type design. I always said that about AA and their "Pin striping". It makes plane seem smaller. Delta goes with the flow so to say...as did Song. Wavy, gracefull, as a plane should.

Not really. They have customer service agents, they have three inches more of seat pitch, they have a "premium" seat section, they charge less for food/drinks and baggage, and they fly to real airports. Spirit and Skybus are very similar "ultra-low-fare" concepts, but Spirit executes it in a far superior way. Although they do have serious check-in issues in Fort Lauderdale due to lack of space.

Quoting Anglo2 (Reply 27):

It isn't necessarily wasting money. Airplanes need to be re-painted every so often. The current scheme uses a lot of paint. It is possible the new one doesn't, and will be cheap to paint on.

I flew Spirit earlier this month from FLL to Guatemala and thought they were fine. Total ticket price in the 120ish, a breeze compared to the 500 dollar fares usually to central America. Coffee and soft drinks one dollar. On time. Enough seat pitch, believe me, at many blue chip airlines like Cathay Pacific I seated worse. Chatty and smiley F/A's and cockpit crew. Not crashed. Nice livery although I liked the blue/white digital version better.

It's definitely not going to be an aluminum (bare metal) scheme as this has never been done on an A320 family aircraft (I think this is an Airbus requirement). Also, it's not likely that they would go from silver paint to bare metal, as the silver paint looks just fine as it is. The only bare metal Airbus aircraft that I know of is the American Airlines A300-605R, which by the way was originally painted in grey. However, if American ever decides to order the Boeing 787 (they probably will eventually), unlike all the current aircraft in their fleet, their 787s will definitely NOT be bare metal!
