"Big" Plane Near YOO? Any Info?

Fri Sep 21, 2007 11:32 am

Hi all,

I was hoping some of you people with knowledge and investigative savvy can help me out.

Last Sunday i was inside my house (Courtice, Ontario) when my kids started screaming for me to see the "big" plane. Just after they finished their sentence i started to hear a louder than usual aircraft" roar". I immediately went outside to only see the aircraft for literally a half a second. It was indeed large, lager than anything i have seen around YOO (Oshawa, Ontario, just east of YYZ). My initial thought was a 737, but dismissed that as there is no way one of those machines would/should land in Oshawa. It was also very low, again, for the length of time that i saw the plane i would guess 2000'? I'm most likely off with that number but i do know it was low. I stopped thinking about it thinking my mind was playing tricks until a friend called today and asked if i had some info on the sighting. He basically confirmed it was larger than "usual". He said it was a 757 in United colours. My kids confirmed the United colours, not the actual airline.
btw, it was mid-afternoon, not sure of the exact time, if that helps.

Any way something like this can be tracked/checked/verified?

There as a CAF CC-150 (313) flying to the east of Toronto last Sunday about noon. It also did a final approach to YTZ. I bet that was what you saw.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Quoting Yyz717 (Reply 1):

Is that an A-310?
And if it was, and i have no reason to doubt you, they were only doing approaches, not actual landings ot touch & go?
From my brief look, i thought the colour was grey ish which would confirm CAF, to a certain degree.
How did you come about this info? Just curious for the future should i try to get info.

Thanks for your help

A CC-150 Polaris is a military designation for a converted Airbus A310-300.

YOO has two runways - Runway 12/30: 4000 ft x 100 ft, and Runway 04/22: 2670 ft x 100 ft.

Neither runway seems to be long enough for an A310 or 757. I think a 757 requires somewhere around a minimum of 5500ft, and an A310-300 probably considerably more.

I was recently in Whitby, very close to YOO and did notice some larger aircraft there, but not large enough to possibly be a 757 or A310-300. I'm talking larger turboprops and DC-3/4's, but not much else. Still, could be military traffic perhaps?
