Urgent Check In Question

A friend is flying on UA Express from LAX - OAK tonight

She then has a 35 minute layover, and then flies on CO from OAK to IAH. Will she have to go back and check in with Continental and then clear security again or can she go to the gate and check in at OAK?

does she have bags? is it electronic? and is here ticket on one itinerary?

You can check in at the gate in this situation as long as:

1) No luggage to check or claim unless it is checked between carriers - this can be done if the reservations are linked through the reservations - you likely can't do it at check in in LAX if it is not set up already.
2) I believe she will be staying in terminal 1 in OAK as UA and CO both operate there

SO, I think all will be fine from a facilities perspective. But the cut off for check-in is 30 minutes I believe!! So, I'd recommend she check-in online for the CO part, have a boarding pass in-hand when flying LAX-OAK for the CO segment, and she should be JIT! (JUST IN TIME).

If she is checking bags this itinerary will not work. However if she is not checking bags, she has several options for her check-in. She can check in remotely via the internet and print out her boarding pass(es); she can do a dual check-in in LAX where she goes to the UA counter for her UA flight and to the CO counter for her CO flight (both in LAX) using either live agents or the self service kiosks or any combination thereof. Let's hope her UA flight is on schedule and with a bit of luck, perhaps her CO flight will run a few minutes late.

When she checks in for her UA Ex flight in LAX, if she has to check a bag in, she should ask the person at the UA check in counter to interline her bag all the way through to IAH. That shouldn't be a problem as long as she shows boarding passes for all her flights. Several years ago, I flew UA from ACV down to SFO and BA from SFO to LHR on two separate tickets and the UA agent here in Arcata offered to check my bag all the way through to the UK. Interlining between legacies is done all the time. That is not the case with budget airlines. Example, you cannot interline bags between a legacy carrier and WN. You have to recheck your bags at the connection city.

I hope she has a good flight.
I'm leavin on a jet plane. Don't know when I'll be back again....

I deal with this on a daily basis here in MHK. We operate as US Express but always have someone on DL, CO, NW, etc... and if she does not have her reservations linked on one PNR, they can tag her bags with a manual bag tag when she first checks in on UA. She will have to check in again to get her boarding passes at CO, but wont have to go all the way to baggage claim to get the bag and then drag it back to check in.

All of our pax go to MCI and change terminals and it works beautifully, IF she doesnt have to worry about the bag. My advice would be not to check a bag in the first place but if she absolutely has to, I would have the bag tagged manually. Just dont be a jerk to the CSA, they may just say tough $hit!

She has a 35 minute connection which is an invalid connect time for checked bags. The agent should NOT check the bags as he or she knows that the bag has essentially no chance of making the flight. The agent is therefore knowingly creating a situation in which the passenger will not receive their bag(s) and force a baggage claim and therefore additional costs for the other airline involved. (In many cases this will be your own airline...don't do it!) Ideally, barring some extreme circumstance, an itinerary with a 35 minute connection should never have been booked to begin with. It's not realistic and is setting up both the passenger and the airlines for disappointing results. I suggest rebooking alternative flight(s).

You are right. That is a pretty tight connection and considering the first flight is out of LAX, any kind of delay and you are in trouble. Plus, that short of a connection time while interlining is a recipe for disaster.

Or have alternatives in mind. The one feature I like on the UA website is the opportunity to print out the days schedule for any city pair. Example, if I am flying from MCI-DEN-SFO I'll print out the days flights for MCI-SFO (including connections), MCI-DEN/ORD and ORD/DEN-SFO. That way I have print outs of all my options and have a game plan in case I need to talk to Customer Service Agent because of a delayed or canceled flight.
