The Future Of Liverpool Airport (LPL)

Sun Sep 23, 2007 6:18 am

After watching the rapid growth of Liverpool Airport over the past 10 years, I was wondering what will the future hold for Liverpool.
Liverpool has now firmly placed itself on the map as a low cost airport with EZY and FR as the two biggest carriers. In the past 5 years we have seen other low cost carriers join the airport but no other different types of airlines (except for VLM and Euromanx offering different services compared to the low cost airlines). Could we see any new airlines in the future?

I know people don't like them but hate them or not FlyGlobepan at Liverpool has failed due to numerous reasons. I personally had so much hope in GSM at Liverpool opening TATL for Liverpool. Maybe one day seeing the likes of A330's or 767's at Liverpool. Do you think TATL could work at Liverpool again with say the likes of DLor even charter TCX/MYT on their Canadian routes?

I know that Liverpool is Capital of Culture next year and it has helped the airport but what could we see at Liverpool after 2008. A bigger Terminal? More airlines? A better Trans Atlantic Link?

Is there a restriction on the runway length at LPL?

Master Plan to 2030
7late7, A3latey, Sukhoi Superlate... what's going on?

Not at present for the ops they do, 737s and 319s don't have any problems out of LPL with regards to the runway length.

But would there be restrictions in terms of payload if a 767 of A330 were to operate in and out on a regular basis?

Sure but no airlines operate those a/c from LPL on a regular basis at present, so there isn't obviously a requirement for it. When or if regular long haul routes become available out of LPL with those aircraft then the runway length could possibly become an issue.

What LPL really lacks I think is a hub airline

What LPL lacks is basic infrastructure like jetways. Neither of the 2 "future plans" show jetways. How are you going to attract transatlantic flights without even the minimum passenger conveniences. LPL is a basic low cost regional airport, that's it.

Here here, you have hit the nail right on the head there. Unless the terminal and/or facilites is expanded/greatly improved (or if it can be expanded without giving up apron room) I can't see regular long haul flights out of there happening. LPL is also a pain in the arse to get to if you don't have a car, there is no train link.

Perhaps this will seem picky but they have a base at LPL, not a hub. By a hub airline, I mean one that can offer connections - KL/AMS, AF/CDG etc

GSM did LPL-JFK/YHM this summer. JFK has been a total disaster but one of the main reasons for this was the airlines reliability and punctuality and not LPL's facilities

I guess to are refering to attracting the likes of CO/DL however, who are of course in a different 'league' to GSM. But with these airlines at MAN I cant see them serving LPL anytime soon

There is Liverpool South Parkway (similar to Luton Airport Parkway) with a bus link to the terminal
