United 757 Fleet

Hey all,

Just had a couple questions about the UA 757 fleet. How many ETOPS certified frames does UA have?? And, does anyone know the tail / fleet numbers?? Same for the 3-cabin Premium Service frames....how many, and what are the tail / fleet nums??

13 p.s. nose numbers 57xx
16 ETOPS 55xx
13 Overwater 56xx
55 Regular 54xx

p.s and Etops aircraft will be getting winglets starting next month and will be reasigned new nose numbers

There would be other members far more knowledgeable about it than myself, but to my understanding twins can be flown overwater up to 90 minutes, without having ETOPS rules applied, just "overwater" rules. Beyond that, you need ETOPS. Like I said thought, take that with a large grain of salt!!

Thanks for the reply. I knew the 55XX fleet nums were the ETOPS birds, but I never knew what the 56XX designation meant.

Very different...

Many US airlines have overwater equipped planes that allow operations in areas such as across the Gulf, up and down the East Coast away from the shoreline (>50nm)... The over water equipped planes have supplemental emergency equipment to allow for the off shore routings however not any of the added systems nor operating restrictions of ETOPS planes.

So possible overwater means flights over the Caribbean Ocean or Gulf of Mexico where ETOPS would not be required?

You are correct. It also has to do with the emergency equipment carried on board. Overwater 757s have a bigger slide raft capacity, in addition to additional life rafts. 54XX planes are not equipped with these devices.

I believe the two will have separate designations, since the P.S. fleet warrents its own code for internal purposes: I.E.: Fueling, operations, maintenence, dispatching, ramp, etc.

As for the other 757s, it's my understanding that they will not receive wingletts, as these "ordinary" 57s also fly plenty of short hops, such as ORD-LGA/DCA, or DEN-RNO, in which wingletts are less economical on shorter legs.

Just check "90 minutes" and generate the map. According to that, the entire Gulf coast region can be flown under "overwater" rules, not full ETOPS.

As of now only 29 winglets planned... p.s. and ETOPS birds, however dont be surprised to see some other UA 757 subfleet changes as we move into 2008.

ETOPS has no direct connection to time over water. It's based on time to a suitable diversion airport. It's possible to spend any amount of time you want over water and never require ETOPS. It's also possible to spend the whole flight over land and require ETOPS.

You are correct... Any flight that is over 60 minutes away from a suitable airport will require an ETOPS flight plan.

Ha, interesting, thanks for the info. I guess I never realized how ETOPS could be required over land in some circumstances, but it all makes sense now.
