Passenger Got A Scorpion Bite Aboard Iberia Flight

Tue Sep 25, 2007 4:00 am

http://www.aldia.co.cr/ad_ee/2007/septiembre/24/nacionales1251769.html (Spanish only)

Apparently a passenger who was on bord IB6310 from SJO to MAD got a scorpion, just as the plane was on approach to MAD. A doctor aboard the aircraft immediately treated the passenger when he complained about a pain in his stomach. The passenger was later received by a medical team and is said to be doing fine and has returned home after a short treatment. Nobody knows how the animal got on board the aircraft, but after a search, it was found dead by a passenger.

How the hell can things like these happen?

With the crap people bring on board or critters that find their way in items, I wonder.

It probably crawled or it was carried on board.

Many types of animals can inadvertantly get on board an aircraft. It just so happens this one was deadly and was able to sting someone before it was killed.

Scorpion bites are not painful. Their stings are.

Animals and little critters are not at all uncommon at airports. Where I work mice are seen in the terminal regularly, there is a small bird's nest in the hangar, there is a cat that lives in the 737 tent, and about every 1-3 weeks you can spot a coyote or fox running around on airside.

After a few months working at the airport, I'm actually surprised one doesn't hear about small animals getting a free flight more often...

Actually I have to correct myself. The passenger wasn't bitten by the scorpion, he was stung by the scorpion. I apologise for the small error in translation.

America West had a scorpion get in the blankets and get on board a flight.
I used to see scorpions often while working the ramp in Vegas.

the thread starter didn't state in the original post whether or not the passenger was bitten or stung. And every sting may not be fatal, but most of them can do some unpleasant damage to the victim.

Yeah I know with poisonous animals most won't necessarily kill a human but they can make you sick from their venom. Although there are a few more species of poisonous snakes that can be deadly I know that most of them wont kill you as well.

Scorpions don't bite. They sting. It is also where their venom is located.

One question: if someone was trying to bring a scorpion from Costa Rica to Spain, isn't that illegal? Wouldn't customs have possibly stopped that guy anyway?

My dad once stood on a scorpion in the south of France and it got him in the big toe. (He was wearing open toed sandals at the time.) Put him in bed for a couple of days feeling very rough with one very sore leg.

It might have been a stowaway in a piece of luggage, shoe. Whatever. It might not have been purposely boarded, but inadvertantly onboard. Lots of possibilities. Especially from a country that has scorpions.
