Looks Like IAH-DXB Is Going Daily

Tue Sep 25, 2007 4:09 am

I was doing some work today and I was looking at flights to DXB. It looks like EK is upgrading IAH service to 5x weekly at the end of January, and then going daily in Febuary.

WE 30JAN HOU / DXB +10:00 HR
DL 8 S T W S 08JAN-09FEB IAHDXB 410P 705P+ CHG 1
UL 2312 S M W F S 28JAN-03FEB IAHDXB 625P 735P+ 77L *0
EK 212 S M W F S 28JAN-03FEB IAHDXB 625P 735P+ 77L 0

WE 20FEB HOU / DXB +10:00 HR
DL 8 S T W S 12FEB-08MAR IAHDXB 410P 705P+ CHG 1
UL 2312 S M T W T F S 04FEB-08MAR IAHDXB 625P 735P+ 77L *0
EK 212 S M T W T F S 04FEB-08MAR IAHDXB 625P 735P+ 77L 0

I havent seen a press relase, but seats are for sell on all of the dates.

I appologize if this has been discussed, I looked and couldnt see if it had been.
It is what it is...

This was planned from the beginning of the route when EK announced it. They decided to start the route with the aircraft they had and then ramp-up to daily when they had more 77Ls.

Hardly. Along with their expertise in the oil service industry, these are extremely savvy negotiaters and playmakers when it comes to making deals. With their connections and access, it makes the difference between meeting with another middle east oil ministry flunky, and the emir himself, when a major contract is on the line.

But I'm getting conflicting answers about a CO codeshare on this route, anyone have the definative world on that?

Sure. Just a Hollywood movie. If movies reflected real life, Tokyo would have been plowed over dozens of times by Godzilla already.

As far as choice of aircraft, EK wants the best performing aircraft for the route, and the ability to carry tons of time sensitive oil and gas equipment on the shortest available route will be critical here.

Have yet to see their aircraft, although that might change once the passenger air service begins.

Keep in mind IAH is not just an energy company HQ; it also is home to industrial companies that produce diamond studded drill bits to imaging software used by prospectors in the search for oil. With CO's middle east route network a bit thin on their own metal, this is a good opportunity for EK SkyCargo to make a dent.

Oh totally yeah - im not disputing that. EK are going to absolutely clean up on that route. I'm surprised EY havent looked at it as well. Maybe QR may consider it when they get their 77Ls?

Not at the moment. The only Cargo heading directly to the Middle East from IAH, to my knowledge, is the services performed by Global Supply Systems about twice a week at this time with their B747-400Fs. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's flown on behalf of BA Cargo and it eventually heads to Sharjah.

Saudia also has B747-200F services through Ostend on a 1-2 x weekly service as well.

QR execs have made a number of visits to H-Town in the past and HAS (Houston Airports Systems) have publicly announced that talks are in progress. Though I suspect they are likely going to observe EK's IAH ops for a year or so to measure how the route works out.

I am not. They probably figure that EK, the Euros (AF, KL, LH and BA) already have a lock on Houston, so why bother?

Ive been wondering this from the get go. It would be nice for the CO FF's because otherwise they wont get Elite Qualifying miles. I sure hope they do, but would it be in CO's best interest?

But not be in EK's, so they might not......why would EK want all these skyteam member getting CO FF miles, only to have CO pull the rug from under them once the 787s come on board.

you can bet your bottom dollar that CO is itching to launch IAH-DXB, IAH-KWI and IAH-Lagos

CO won't be able to compete with EK on the IAH-DXB route... continentals BizFirst product is nothing compaired to EK or almost any other European carrier who all operate routes into IAH. Don't get me wrong I like CO alot and I am from Houston.. but EK will have the upper hand here

I certainly hope so. It seems like all of the growth CO does is from EWR. More than anything this is what I would like to see:

In this order:

IAH-ICN on KE
IAH-LOS on CO
IAH-HKG on CO
IAH-China on CO
IAH-FRA/MAD on CO

Some of these are more feasible than others, but I can dream.

KE keeps teasing IAH, c'mon bring em a nice big 777!!!!
It is what it is...

Don't be so sure.......two words.....Corporate Contracts.....

My brother works for an oil company and the firms policy is fly CO (aka Skyteam) whenever possible...so he flies CO to POS and AF/KL to LOS/KWI/LAD and those other hairy places. He only flies BA etc when they can't get a Business Class seat on the day he needs.....which is more often than you think....

He told me he once flew on BA IAH-ORD-LHR . The premium cabin was overbooked and economy only had 2 pax on the IAH-ORD segment. BA offered him 2 roundtrips to take the downgrade..which he took

The thing is I doubt CO would start these routes from IAH. They would launch "convenient" one-stop services through EWR. When they previously applied for LOS, it was from EWR and not IAH. If they keep expanding out of EWR rather than IAH, then other carriers are going to come take their place at IAH. Just look at EK, City Star airlines starting service to ABZ, Arik Air planning on serving IAH from LOS, etc.

I don't know, they gave IAH the cold shoulder when the first applied for the LOS via EWR a few years back. Th did not even consider (at least publicly) making it a direct same plane service from IAH.

Great point and I agree completely

While I want to see CO expand from IAH with regards to int'l services, I just don't want to see IAH turn into a DFW where a prospective new entrant would likely be scared off by CO's overpowering dominance. Just look at the lack of Latin carriers at IAH (save for AM, Aviasca and TA) this is no doubt due in at least some part to CO dominating Latin America from IAH and few carriers from that region are willing to take on CO here.

Frankly I am pulling for a Arik or VK to LOS from IAH over a service requiring a change-of-plane at EWR,. Hardly convenient for those wanting to get to LOS or other destinations as quickly as possible.

Now, what if these flights exceed all expectations and as one here implied and EK hypothetically ups the route to a twice daily service (again a BIG IF), what are the chances that instead of doing a twice daily flight, EK might grace IAH with one their 'BIG BUSSES a few years down the line?

A good number of oil company employees from CRP go via IAH and AMS to get to DXB. This will take away the stop in AMS, Europe, or North American East coast cities. Valero and Citgo oil have large operations in the area and send quite a few pax that direction. We also see pax going to FNLU out of IAH, on WO, but that service is once a week I belive. I have yet to check in anyone going onto SV, but have on a regular basis ones connecting to EK.

Well, the DXB-IAH (longest leg) will take 17 hours. EWR-HKG (772-ER) is 16 hours (and that route is flown also (from JFK by an A346), so it will be 1 hour longer.
If the 380 has "1 more hour of range" than the 346, it should be able to do it in the limit of it's range (payload restricted I guess).
Well, the non HGW 346's have 7750nm of range, and the 380 has 8200nm (data from airbus.com), then it has 450nm (~850km) more range. That's roughly 1 hour.
Maybe feasible (not sure if economic) with Emirates low density (480 or something like that) config.

Anyway, when it comes to Emirates using the 380 in the US, I guess the most "confortable" routes for it would be the East Coast and possible Chicago...
