MUC - Europes Most Prosperous Airport?

Tue Sep 25, 2007 9:24 pm

I think this could be somewhat interesting for the a.netters:

http://www.abcmoney.co.uk/news/212007121810.htm

The TransRapid deal is sealed - MUC will have a high velocity train-link to MUC downtown by probably 2011. In my humble opinion, this only makes MUC even more attractive and also shows what great potential the airport still holds. Also there are plans for an annex for T2, increasing capacity to 67million pax, reconstruction of T1 and a possible T3. I think LH will realise sooner or later that expanding will be far more easy for them in MUC than in FRA where an expansion is urgently needed but due to political quarrels won't materialised any time soon. Hopefully we will see some more widebodies at MUC.
All in all, I think MUC is the airport to be in Germany. LH have already realised that and will hopefully strengthen the airport MUC with the introduction of new destinations.

It is so nice to see the transrapid being firmed in MUC, this definitely positions the airport to one of the most convenient one in Europe, where you can reach the city in 15 minutes.
I have no idea about LH's expansion though, but it is always good to see such a nice airport with free newspaper and coffee in its Terminal. It is no doubt airports worldwide could learn how to run a nice and efficient airport.

Hey, we don't give FRA away and we work very hard here every day to maintain LHs first and big hub.

But anyways, great establishment for MUC. I hate the connex to downtown. It takes too much time. Great development for sure!

I'm not sure whether MUC is the most prosperous european airport right now, everything on your post is on planning and development (annex for T2, T1 reconstruction, posible T3, highspeed train, etc) not even into construction yet.

IMHO, MAD is a much more pleasant and friendly airport to connect, has a brand new Terminal 4, installed capacity of about 95 million pax a year, 15 minute subway ride to downtown, IB network growing steadily.

I know some of you will jump at me saying that MAD have no Asian, Middle East link, I know that already.......

Well, let's see how long it will take for MUC to get their 3rd runway.
Remember that the same rules, laws and problems that slow the project in FRA are valid for MUC too. Just that there are not so many people living around the airport. But they will also have some groups who will try to stop the expansion.

The process for the 4th runway in FRA will (hopefully) soon be finalized. As soon as this runway is built, LH will expand in FRA. But FRA and MUC can live next to each other. Now with another big player in the German Airline merket, both airports will get their share. But don't expect MUC overtaking FRA in the next 10 years. Won't happen.

well only if you have to connect within terminal 4, but than again terminal 2 in muc is IMHO much better to connect and of course in less time.

Yes the subway connection into downtown is still better in MAD but just let us wait till the Transrapid...

cheers

well, it's only connecting friendly when staying in the indeed very nice T4. Last year I flew BRE-FRA-MAD with LH, and MAD-XRY. And let me tell you, connecting from T1 to T4 with three other people in your back, nagging and not knowing Spanish...not fun! T4 is very nice, but they need to improve connecting between the terminals. You easily need at least an hour to transit.

I really don't expect MUC to surpass FRA in the next years, I just think that MUC has better chances to grow and if LH are forced to expand in MUC bc of problems in FRA, than they will do so. But I am also keeping my fingers crossed that FRA will get this bloody fourth runway - it depends alot on the elections!

Not really as both big parties are in favor of the expansion. Only the green party is against it.

Not really. The plan includes 50m € from the EU, which isn't willing to spend the money. The airport is supposed to spend 100m €, but it is owned by the state Bavaria and the city of Munich. And guess what, the ruling party in Munich is against it and will veto the state's decision to spend the airport's money for the Transrapid. And even if the funding is complete, the city and NIMBYs are going to file lawsuits.
Exceptions confirm the rule.
