Exactly How Big Do They Expect Katl To Get?

I was browsing through the net with nothing to do as usual when I decided to go to wikipedia (maybe a bad idea). Well anyway, after reading up on a few airlines I ran across KATL.

Note in Check I'n Baggage Claim/South Gate Complex section. Up to 70 gates! Are they serious? I don't think other airlines will be able to fly through the southeast in the next 15 years.

What do you think H-Jack will look like withing the next 15-25 years? I see the Jackson International terminal being finished (hopfully on schedule; they say 2010+ so that can mean anything). I also don't see it as needing to be bigger than Terminal E (should have less gates in my opinion). Another Passenger concourse would also be fitting but not one of the size they are proposing. Maybe the size of concourse A but a totally different design. Hopefully we'll be able to see different tales than DL in the future.

Yes, the plan is currently to include 70 gates in the South Gate Complex. Initially the plan was for 31 gates, but with AirTran's growth, the new proposal is for 70 gates. AirTran is considered by many to be a likely tenant for the new South Gate Complex.

The original plan might have included some gates for widebody aircraft, but might now be for more narrower gates. Widebody sized gates are currently mostly found in Concourses T, A, and E, with a small number of them in Concourse B. Delta's domestic widebody operations are mainly handled in Concourses T and A, but sometimes in Concourse E and rarely in Concourse B. Most international widebody traffic is handled in Concourse E, but Delta now has a few departing transatlantic flights in Concourse T. Concourse F will also include widebody gates for international aircraft. Only Concourse E, though, can currently handle 777s or any aircraft with a longer wingspan than a 767-400ER. Since AirTran will likely be the main tenant for the South Gate Complex, there is no need for widebody-sized gates. AirTran currently operates a total of 45 gates, 36 of which are in Concourse C and nine which are in Concourse D. The old proposal wouldn't be able to handle AirTran's ATL ops.

Ok, that makes sense. I could see Airtran moving to the new facility, well I guess they'll figure out how will be the new major tenant in the future. That way, most, if not all DL connection flights can move to C if Airtran moves out and D can be a mix of Airlines and the new terminal would probably be AirTran and a mix of airlines (probaly to include Delta).

DL's operations would remain in the Midfield Complex. I could see the FL end of C becoming DL Connection gates, and the DL and DL Connection operations on D moved as well. I think that AA and UA could potentially be some of the airlines to move to the South Terminal as well. DL could use those gates. With FL moved across the way (and Delta to the entire T Gates), that opens up a number of gates on D for current airlines and opens up space to potentially attract new airlines or allow current airlines to increase service.

Here's my airline layout at ATL once the South Terminal opens (* designates potential future airline service):

T Gates: DL
Concourse A: DL
Concourse B: DL and some Delta Connection
Concourse C: Delta Connection
Concourse D: US, US Airways Express, NW, CO, CO Connection/Express, NK, YX, AC, AC Jazz, VX*, WS*, B6*
Concourse E & F: DL (Int'l), AF, BA, LH, KL, KE, Delta Connection, JM
South Terminal: FL, F9, AA, American Eagle, UA, United Express, AS*

I don't think that JetBlue intends on returing to ATL. ATL was a money loser for them as they couldn't achieve quick turnaround times. This is probably the same reason why Southwest will never come to ATL.

FL doesn't have nearly that many gates in ATL. They have 22 on the C concourse, and they share the remaining 10 common use gates on the D concourse. FL would kill for 45 full time gates.

They left because DL and FL (By way of Ryan International) defended their turf and pushed B6 out, not because of turnaround issues (Especially considering that by the time they ended service, the two flights left early in the morning). B6 made the big mistake of not offering any ATL-JFK service; sure the ATL-NYC market is pretty well served (heck even AA is cherry picking with their flights to LGA), but I think B6 could have carved a nice niche for themselves in Atlanta.

DL's gates on D always seemed to be a bit stupid to me, as they're out of the way for most connections. If they could get UA and AA (Both of which used to be on D years back) to move over to the South Terminal (One of the pluses would be they could actually have room to expand service) and have DL move to those gates, you help to further condense DL's operations, plus open up a good number of gates on D. The majority of Delta Connection ops would be centralized on one concourse (with the exception of the international service, and maybe a few gates on B), the 10 common use gates that AirTran is the main user of would be available for new service or new carriers, the DL/DL Connection gates would also be open as well.

Is the South Complex going to have its own terminal, or will the one main terminal continue to be used and the gates will just be satellites?

ok i didn't word that right.......DL will stay in T and D(DLC in D) also B no longer has wide body flights biggest airplane B will see is a 757.(a buddy of mine works on B (DL line MX))

The South Terminal will be just that, a terminal. It will have its own entrance off of I-285 or Riverdale Road IIRC. There will be a connection to the Midfield Concourses and original terminal through extensions to the current underground train system and they will all be under one secured area.

Add to that Concourse D sucks ass and is too small with not much in the way of ammenities. What would be great for D would be to add anohter underground path halfway down the concourse like there is from C to B leftover from the days Eastern inhabited those concourses.

If the ASA magazine is to be believed there are changes coming on Concourse C including full jetbridges to access all planes. Not sure what that means for the mess of planes and accordian gates on the ground at the end of C but it might reduce some gate capacity there.

Not necessarily. While AirTran wants a separate terminal, the city wants it to be just another concourse connected to the main terminal via people mover. Ticket Counters, bag claim, parking, etc., would remain where they are now.

Where did you get that info? As far as I heard, it will feature its own baggage claim, check-in desks, and parking structure, and will be connected to the midfield concourses and main terminal via an expansion to the APM system. The same will be true for the Jackson International Terminal and its new concourse, Concourse F.

I wonder who will make the APM to connect to the South Gate Complex. The current APM between the concourses is a Bombardier CX-100 system, however, the new APM to connect the main terminal to the new CONRAC will use Mitsubishi Crystal Movers. I personally would like to see the Bombardier Innovia at ATL, which is faster than the CX-100. DFW's Skylink uses the Innovia.

Also, I wonder what the new terminal will be called. I personally would like it to be called the Candler Terminal, with its concourse referred to as Concourse G.
