El Al Resuming Istanbul?

Thu Sep 27, 2007 2:30 am

Amadeus is showing LY restarting TLV-IST service from November using 737-800. Istanbul was suspended earlier this year along with Chicago and Larnaca.

I heard this one also. The reason they suspended the flights was due to security. I wonder what has changed?
How will they compete with TKs multiple daily flights. Like today:
TK1192 A332
TK5492 B738
TK1184 A310
TK1186 A321

Is there much tourism or business between these two nations?

I don't understand the logic of that, What security problem did LY ever had IST? it served the country for years

-There is a fair amount of Turkish Jews mostly living in IST
-Tons of Israeli tourist visiting Turkey.
-Decent amount of business between the 2 countries, textiles etc, also major govt contracts(defense)

Turkey has ranked as one of the top destination for Israeli tourist these last few years. In addition to the scheduled flights, there is a very active charter market between the countries particularly at Antalya.

Lastly THY has capitalized on its IST hub by feeding traffic globally to/from Israel. For trivia, one of the top onward connection point for TK's Delhi service is Tel Aviv.

If you remember back to last year a group of people were arrested in Southern Turkey for plotting to attack Israeli interest This event even stopped ferry traffic between the countries for about a week when it was feared the group was about to strike.

In addition LY had issues with the ability to operate with armed agents at IST. This was not the first time LY had to stop services due to such restrictions, previously carried had to discontinue operations to Sweden when the government revoked permission for armed Israeli security officers to operate.

Just once weekly according to amadeus as LY 581, could be seasonal scheduled charters.

Would it be any different if LY is to fly to Istambul's other airport?

LY is losing market share. Although most discussions in this forum about El Al focus on longhaul aircraft and destinations, LY is having increasing difficulty competing on routes to nearby destinations. TK and most European airlines offer more flights and better aircraft from their hubs to TLV than LY. Before it suspended flights to IST, LY flew there two or three times a week with narrow body aircraft while TK flew to TLV several times a day with both wide body and narrow body aircraft. Even if LY returned to IST, I doubt that it could really compete with TK.

The same is true for Europe. LH, OS, LX, IB, and financially troubled AZ offer more seats, more convenient schedules, and newer and larger aircraft on these routes than LY does. For example, LH outperforms LY on the FRA-TLV route, and the Jerusalem Post reports that LH will probably resume MUC-TLV flights next summer. Starting in early 2008, LX will offer two daily 343 flights to TLV. LY does not offer anything comparable to ZRH. Its schedules and service to VIE, MXP, and FCO do not match what OS and AZ offer customers. Although LY has been competitive on flights to London, BMI and Thompsonfly will enter this market. Additionally, there is speculation that BA will soon fly 777s on both of its daily flight to TLV. CDG seems to be the only route in Europe where LY outperforms its competitor AF. But then again, AF, unlike other European airlines, does make much of an effort to compete on flights to TLV.

LY flying to SAW would not be a wise move.

The Asian side of Istanbul where SAW sits is primarily residential, while the European side where IST lays is the commercial and tourist heart of the city. Its not that Turks really fly to Israel, its Israeli's come to Turkey and dumping them on the Asian side far away from the cities business and tourism sites along with hotels in not a good marketing idea.

The reason why LCCs have take up at SAW is because it does sit around dense residential areas while providing a lower cost base. The millions of Istanbul residents that live on the Asian side have willingly accepted SAW as good alternative to treking across the Bosphorus while Europeans will put up with the added distance to save a few Euro's or Pounds.

Now if Arkia, or Israir wanted to serve Istanbul with lower fare flights then SAW might make sense. However in LYs case it would be disadvantaged trying to serve SAW while competing with TK operating to IST.
