Thu Sep 27, 2007 1:58 pm

MIA newly constructed Concourse J received its first flight Wednesday, from LAN Airlines.

Eleven other airlines will move into Concourse J and seven more will operate flights at the newly renovated Concourse H, also included in South Terminal. All 19 airlines are scheduled to relocate to the new terminal area by Nov. 13.

Very nice to hear,

What I was expecting, though, was the adition of an A380 gate in this new terminal. This means that the big girl won't be flying into MIA?

So it seems that OneWorld is the owner of this terminal. Very nice!
Flying isn't dangerous. Crashing is what's dangerous!

MIA really needed this new terminal.....specially for southamerican carriers, which move lots of pax for the airport.

I'm glad AV gets to use this terminal......hope to use it pretty soon.

It is my understanding this new terminal was built w/ 1 if not 2 A380 capable gates already. Perhaps MAH... can confirm that.

The South Terminal (Concourses H-J) will be shared by Star Alliance and SkyTeam, although the airport retains full control over the concourses and gates. We're seeing oneworld-aligned airlines at the South Terminal is because Concourse A is being closed down for a while to speed up construction of the North Terminal (Concourses A-D). That's 20 gates' worth of capacity that the North Terminal is losing, and Concourses C and D don't have the capacity to compensate for this. Hence the temporary reshuffling of airlines around the airport.

It is A380-ready. Rather than lay out the money, though, once an airline commits to flying the A380 to MIA, it will take approximately 6-8 months for MIA to convert a gate area into a fully A380-capable gate. MIA has been in active talks with Air France and Lufthansa about A380 service. I bet you Lufthansa will be flying A380s to Miami not long after they start taking delivery. Perfect A380 route for them.
