BA Still Upgrading Its B 747-400s And B 767s?

Thu Sep 27, 2007 5:54 pm

Is BA still upgrading its B 747-400s as well as B 767s with new business class seats and AVOD on every single seat? Or have they already done so?

QF and NZ are done on their B 747-400s right?

BA

All long haul 767's have the first generation club world flat bed's installed.

I belive something like 90% of the 747-400 fleet has the new white generation2 flat beds & AVOD.

The 777's are due to get gen 2 club world from FEB08

NZ

All their 747-400's are done with flat beds and AVOD

QF

Not sure about AVOD, btu they all have flat beds in J.
They are also being refitted with the new interiors )with Y+ from FEB08 also (JNB, HKG, LHR flights)

AFAIK BA's 767 are not scheduled to be retroffited with new CW product.

If BA Keeps the 744s as long as it Kept the 747 Classics the 744s will be old enough to Have a Beer in the US before BA retires them so the -400 fleet will get loads of Mods in the futture.

As for the 767s they are starting to get old they still do a great Job but are fairly thirsty gas wise so BA may end up passing them on to another operator some time in the futture!

From what I heard all of BA's B 747-400s, B 777-200ERs, B 767-300s will be upgraded.

Are they done with the upgrades on the B 777-200ERs?

When I flew with BA from LHR to LAX and back the 744 on the way to LAX had the new AVOD system and on the way back home they had the old AVOD. The old AVOD compered to the new one is horrible.

Do BA's LH 767's have PTV's in economy now, or are they still without?

Not true. around 15 or so 744s are older or the same age as most of the 763s - and the 763s are probably more efficient or the same as the 744s when it comes to fuel efficiency.

I think the ones that were refitted with the old club world seats (the brown ones), were also installed with PTV's in economy. I think about four 767-300ER's have PTV in economy. Not sure though.

All I know is that dog of a 763 of what was BACitiexpress at MAN for the regular JFK service must be the most unreliable fleet member in the whole of BA.

On a per trip basis of course, but pound for pound, the 747 has a lower fuel burn.

More like turned into beer (cans).

Not just that, but every time G-TECH slips up, it ripples down for days, as it is the only aircraft operating that rotation, which certainly exacerbated the situation.

That's odd because there is only one type of AVOD system installed on the 744s.

The old system was just an 18 channel video 16 channel audio system.

While their BA's 21 767-300's aren't exactly spring chickens, they're also not very old yet. The oldest 767's in their fleet were delivered in 1990 (6 delievered in 1990), so they're about 17 years old.But they also have 3 that were delievered in 1998, and 1 in both 1996 and 1997. 4 out of the 6 767's delivered in 1990 are non-ER's, so they don't have Club World anyway since they do intra-Europe flying. I don't know how many of their -336ER's have Club Europe rather than Club World. I'm thinking BA will definitely be flying these 767's for at least a while longer, since they'd be a harder sell given that they have RB211's rather than CF6's/PW4000's, due to fleet commonality issues; there are only 2 or 3 airlines other than BA that have RR's, and they have notably smaller 767 fleets.

Quite a few are already old enough to have a beer in Switzerland! Legal drinking age 16 for beer and wine and 18 for the hard stuff. Luckily the minimum driving age is 18 like most of Europe.

No. They have not started yet. My personal assessment is that so far they have upgraded 40 and are currently upgrading 2 of their 57 744s. They will start the 772s when all the 744s have been upgraded.

Quoting Orion737 (Reply 10):

Since the 763 upgrades that were completed around 21 months ago BA has not used a dedicated aircraft for the MAN-JFK-MAN rotation. They change the aircraft on that route about twice a month. This is effected by putting the current and replacement aircraft on morning MAN-LHR and LHR-MAN shuttle flights. So, since the beginning of July, the MAN-JFK-MAN flights have been operated by G-BNWR, 'WH, WV, 'WR (again) and (since 4 September) 'WS. This ensures that the Manchester aircraft is maintained in line with all the LHR based aircraft.

And by the way, welcome back Orion737.

I've read here some time ago that there were problems with upgrading Club World on 772s (something related to the floor, ...) Was it a real issue?

As for AVOD - is it related to Club World upgrade? My recent flights in Club World were a month ago, G-CIVG JFK - LHR (AVOD), G-CIVY back ("regular" IFE - at least, not working on demand). Was "no AVOD" on return flight just a technical issue (both aircraft have new Club World, if this is related)?

Overall, BA 747s are here to stay for quite a long time, at least about a decade, so they'll definitely get all the upgrades. Without them, upper deck Club World will be badly missed...

The 767s will not be gettin any new Club world (or club kitchen) and i guess they will run like this untill they are retired from the fleet.

I guess these aircraft may find homes in other new start up airlines or get converted to freighters

Or BA operate them until they gets scrapped.

I think that BA should have PTVs in their short haul 767fleet to.

Given that the B787 starts to arrive in 2010, I see no point in upgrading the B767's.

All BAs 21 B767 are technically similar B767-336ER. They are all capable of ETOPS.
7 of these aircraft are presently flying with 252 seats in Europe. The other 14 have all been converted to the 'old' Club World lie flat seats and AVOD.

Of the 57 B747-436s, 48 have been converted to new Club World and AVOD. The others have old Club World and films on tapes (no AVOD).

Can anyone make a list of which 744s not have AVOD.

I can begin with G-BNLW.

Will they come up with a new first class suite as well?
