EK First To Have Non-stop To All Continents

Fri Sep 28, 2007 1:47 am

Another EK first ...

Article in The Australian

Emirates 'non-stop to anywhere' breakthrough

Quote:
OCTOBER 1 is an important date in the history of global aviation. It will be the first time a carrier has simultaneously linked all the continents (North and South America, Europe, Africa and the Asia Pacific) with non-stop service from one hub.

Emirates received the first of 10 ultra-long-range B777-200LRs this month and will deploy the aircraft from Dubai to the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo from October 1, representing the first non-stop route between the Middle East and South America and achieving the "non-stop to all continents" dream.

Non-stop services to Houston and Toronto will be added shortly, as part of a big push by Emirates into North America.

Increases in capacity to its Indian network are also planned, as well as higher frequencies to Nairobi and Johannesburg. Emirates is also eyeing new routes in South Africa, China and South America and is preparing to operate to more Asian destinations within the next six months.

Dang!! You beat me to it!!

Congrats to EK - But I think Pan Am might have had you beat...from North America, they had non-stops to Asia, Europe, South America, Africa, and with the introduction of the 747SP, Australia.

And if Delta flew to Australia with their own metal, they'd have had you beat too. But sole posessor of first place goes to EK!!  champagne   praise

Doesn't British Airways serve all continents from one hub? Lufthansa certainly did it, when they still flew to Australia.

- sorry, overread the 'nonstop'.

Nope, no... EK will start gazillion daily flights to Snowy Peak Left in 2020. A mix of A390's and 7007's will be deployed on the route.... Big grin

On a serious note, well done EK!

On a serious note, EK's rapid-fire expansion is leading to quite a few slips ups in service. Getting quality personnel I'm sure is becoming an issue. And their DXB hub is getting to be quite a crush during the peak periods.

And to think of the glut of A380s coming in .. EK and it's growth story though, has played a major part in boosting the profile of Dubai as a destination for business and pleasure. What was once a non-descript trading post along the creek is now a widely-recognised commercial hub serving the region and beyond.

South African Airways has achieved this in the past, and may be doing so right now. SAA has had non-stop flights from Johannesburg to Sao Paulo, New York, London, Lagos, Hong Kong, and Perth, each on a different continent. Their flights to New York are not currently non-stop, but their Washington-Johannesburg flight is (the return stops in Dakar, however).

Its just amazing to see how much EK and Dubai have grown since the late 80s! When I transitted through DXB in August I was astonished by all the Emirates tails there were! I just hope that some big terrorist attack or something bad doesn't happen - this won't be good for Emirates right?

Perhaps EK can codeshare a seat or two on the A319ACJ which will be flying from Australia down to Antarctica in a few years, then they really would fly to ALL continents!  silly

That would be news to SAA. Talk about false advertising.
SAA has flown non-stop to every continent in the past (except Antartica and the N.Pole, obviously), and except for Winter refueling stop on the north bound sector to JFK/IAD, it still links every continent to it's hub, non-stop, today.

I think the key differentiator here is "from one hub". Pan Am never did it from a single hub.

I do and I still admire them. The whole concept under which the world center Dubai (and I'm not only talking about EK here) is being developed is simply amazing and truely unique. There are very few cities in the world which will accomodate all the diversity Dubai will have to offer. Very few nations have understood that the airline business is tied to the social-economical development of a country/city. The folks in Dubai knew/know very well that in the near future that will be it for oil and thus have started planing for their survival on the long-run. EK is a part of that plan. And while EK is well on its way to become the world's largest airline, legacy carriers such as LH for example, are struck by trivial issues such as 'noise restriction' problems at home.

One thing I've always had a problem with is people saying that EK is being aided by the Government and thus always had a lot of money in it's pocket. First off, people should never confuse Government financial support with aligned growth strategies (which is clearly the case here). Secondly, people should take a look at EK's history, they started up a rather small airline.

To sum up, EK's story is really one to admire, regardless of whether you work for the competition or not.

Cheers,

Marcelo

People joke about Antarctica, but back in the day, Aeroflot *did* fly to Antarctica -- albeit occasionally, and they weren't exactly commercial services, but still: Aerflot is the probably the only name to have graced aircraft on all *seven* continents.

I wrote an article once listing which carriers currently fly to each of the six remaining continents. This was pre-Emirates announcement, but you might like it...

Hi all.

I think some are mis understanding the Emirates Statement.

Emirates are the first airline to operate from their HOME BASE to all the continents NON-STOP. They are flying NON-STOP from DUBAI to JFK, GRU, Europe, Asia and Australia.

SAA did fly to all the continents but not direct to JFK, but via Dakar or Sal.
BAA, and Virgin dont fly direct to Australia.

So its all about flying NON-STOP from your HUB.
