Best Airlines According To Skytrax

Fri Sep 28, 2007 1:49 pm

I'm referring to an article here:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...gi?f=/c/a/2007/09/27/DDN4RQMT8.DTL

Best airline in North America... Air Canada?

Several Asian airlines were ranked 5 stars, but North American legacy carriers were 3 stars.

Let the debate begin!

I have never flown AC so I can't compare them directly to the US carriers. And these airline ratings give you (at best) only a composite picture of an airline and its service.

There are so many variables that come into play for any individual flight. I had some great flights on 3-star US carriers (UA, NW) and a horrible flying experience on a 5-star carrier (CX). And what matters probably most are your expectations.

Still, I am not surprised that Asian carriers in particular rank much higher than US carriers. I exclusively fly Asian carriers (NH, JL, BR) from the US to Asia because they provide much better service than their American counterparts, based on my own experience. Even on short internal flights they often serve some food and drinks and their attendants smile.

Compare this to my recent US domestic experience where I spent 6+ hours (w/o delays!) on an airplane and could not even buy decent food. Let alone the lack of a service attitude among the attendants. A 1 star experience!

I am surprised to see YX still earn high marks on those surveys. They are just a ghost of the original Midwest Express Airlines. They no longer have meal service, and they have done away with the 2x2 leather seats on many of their flights (standard DC-9 2x3 configuration on the Saver flights). IMHO, they have nothing except a chocolate chip cookie that distinguishes them from any other airline. They no longer have their niche concept.

I've yet to fly on an airline wiith better, or equal, economy service than SIA. Awesome in every respect. Absolutely stellar.

AC may be the best in North America, (by whatever standards they go by), but there isn't any North American or European airline that can compete with the Asian carriers...Emirates, being an exception.

Emirates is probably the most highly overrated airline I've ever been on. They are huge because they are cheap, though still beat the pants of NA airlines for services.

Qatar may be 5 star in the fat seats but it's nothing special in the back. Again, that's comparing it to other Asian airlines. Four out of the 8 seats across in the 330/340's have a HUGE avod box under the seats in front which cuts legroom in about half. Not fun for anybody over 5'8".

In the next few weeks, I get to fly EY, AUH-BKK, and CX, BKK-HKG...first time on both of those. I know a bunch of people who fly EY and they're very impressed.

I think one needs to take into consideration the way the ranking is done. On the one hand there are the hard factors, such as facilities at airports, the gadgets the airline's seats feature, leg room etc. Then there are the soft factors like service, size and quality of the served meals, friendliness and efficiency of staff. So sure, perhaps you may have an individual experience with a 5 star airline which was bad because the F/As were rude or unfriendly or I dunno what but over all the ranking system works. Thing is, not everybody has the same emphasis on what constitutes a good airline. For some its comfort, for some its food and for others it's the staff.

Admittedly, I've only flown on SQ on exactly two legs - FRA-JFK and JFK-FRA, but from that "experience", I'd give them 0 stars, if at all that much...

Good ratings that I can understand (from personal experience) are Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, Air Berlin and Frontier - all carriers that I'd fly again without hesitation (as opposed to SQ).

But, then again, this is Skytrax - so it's not as if these ratings really show the quality of an airline: they do, however, constitute a terrific PR-tool.

I think it is close-ish. I decided to do my own list:
-Best Airlines in the World - 1. Cathay Pacific 2. Asiana 3. Singapore Airlines
-Best Airline North America - 1. Air Canada 2. American Airlines 3. Delta Airlines
-Best Airline in South America - 1. LAN 2. Aerolíneas Argentinas 3. TAM
-Best Airline in Europe - 1. Lufthansa 2. British Airways 3. KLM
-Best Airline in Africa - South African Airways 2. Egypt Air 3. Air Mauritius
-Best Airline in Asia - (Same as Best Airlines in the world)
-Best Airline in Pacific - 1. QANTAS 2. Air New Zealand 3. Air Pacific
-Best Low-cost Airline - 1. Jetstar 2. EasyJet 3. Air Asia
-Best Cabin Crew - 1. Asiana 2. QANTAS 3. Japan Airlines

These are all based on either personal experience or what I have been told by friends or family

No offence, but what a load of rubbish. You can hardly compare Air Berlin, Frontier, Cathay and Qatar because they operate completely different markets which only overlap in the case of the latter two airlines.

I've flown about a couple of dozen legs with SQ between Dubai and Oz and on every one, (in goat class), and they have been excellent. They're the best I've been on. My opinion, nothing more.

Absolute rubbish, I agree,
CO outshines AA and DL these days, if only for food service.
DL grabs money everywhere it can, maybe with a smile, but
you get the message.

I flew Singapore Raffles Class from LHR-SIN-KUL and I wasn't terribly impressed: lost my luggage and frozen fruit salad. It wasn't bad per se, but with everyone describing the experience as orgasmic, I was disappointed.

My favourite are Air New Zealand, Virgin Atlantic and Air France.

Skytrax ranking is based on passengers' survey. It is like the 'People's Choice Awards', unlike Conde Nast or something, which may be regarded as the 'Academy Awards' as it was selected by a panel of 'expert'.

Although some may question its credibility, millions of passengers throughout the world took part in Skytrax's survey each year and for me, the 'People's Choice Awards' DO have its own weight.

Agreed

Best Airlines for me would be MH, then SQ and TG, my recent RTW with MH reaffirmed that they truly do deserve the many Cabin Service Awards they have won. The age old SQ and MH battle is often mainly fought by Singaporeans, or people who have never actually flown both airlines.....

Rather hard to make fair trip by trip comparisons, apples and oranges are both fruit, and the airport experience before and after can make a flight based judgement hard to divorce from a trip judgement. If you have had a good experience at Changi, or inevitably a dire check in experience at Heathrow, it can colour your attitude in relation to the carrier saying "welcome aboard".

I have done a lot in the recent past and it is very hard to beat SQ.
Good in all classes, but better in the air than on the ground, superb AVOD and decent food. MH is very good in the air but KL as a hub is a bit behind Changi. Cathay are excellent too, but a while since I had the pleasure. Hong Kong is a fine hub which helps. Emirates, I felt had a better image than reality, a bit below the others but still not pain and suffering. Etihad has a strong product but their service standard is not quiet as slick as CX, must try harder .

LH, usually professional or very professional in the air, let down by airport induced chaos at FRA. Good flight crew, always professional in my experience. BA, often good in the air,but probably pointless if you have LHR / Security / Baggage fun before or after. Some very frosty souls work for them too, not slow to let you know how they feel about "self loading freight" and if you get some of them you will remember why you really do not want to go anywhere over LHR again. AF good in the air, poor at CDG. KL, on a downward curve I think, particularly if you have to get a boarding pass at AMS.

The Americans, well we move down a notch here.
CO certainly the best of the bunch, then AA & DL.
No recent experience of AC.

I thought that Skytrax gave ratings according to customer surveys, if this is true here then of course the thread title could also read.. Best Airlines According to Customer Surveys. So if this is the case there must be some credence to the claim.

Perhaps you need to fly some more - you will have a tough time finding an airline that is consistently as good as SQ. While their coach product is somewhat overrated (or I guess it does not live up to the sky high expectations that people have), they are a notch above all large european and asian airlines I have flown (I have not flown CX - I assume they are good as well).

Oh really?  Yeah sure ... you know, for someone starting a post with "No offence", that post of yours was about as offensive as they get.

How dumb do you think I am, after around 500 flights, to think that AB, F9 are directly comparable with CX and QR?? Obviously, just to make it as plain and simple as possible, I was considering those airlines in their respective fields!

Quoting Sshank (Reply 18):

Well, considering the two flights I've had on them, their service was very consistent: miserable.

Maybe I'll give them another chance at some point, but after the experience, I'm not really in a hurry.

As for "Perhaps you need to fly some more"... see the comments I made above, and have a look at my profile - and then tell me again that you think I need to fly some more before I can make a judgement on whether or not I consider an airline's service to be good, excellent, or miserable.

I guess having best cabin crew doesn't justify them to be the best airline. And now with them giving out snack boxes on flights below 3hrs will definitely not any 5-Star standards.

Quoting Chrisrad (Reply 13):

I beg to differ to this statement. Most people who criticise MH are Malaysians themselves that probably had given up on their own airline. A simple example I can give u is that SQ gets more Malaysian krisflyers members than MH getting Singaporeans enrich customers. My job requires me to deal with pax and therefore I can tell you that there are many Malaysians out there who dump their national carrier for SQ. Even for short flights to PVG they rather trasit in changi.

I'm not saying "SQ sucks all the time", I'm saying they did on my flights - nothing more, nothing less. You've had good flights with them, I've had absolutely perfect flights on airlines that others probably wouldn't consider even having service (Air Zimbabwe comes to mind).

Maybe you guys should know that these Skytrax employees travel quiet a lot on free tickets provided by the
airline they survey. On top of this, normally all employees involved with the flight are aware that there is a Skytrax
person on board.

So much to an independent survey!!

I am sure a lot of airline staff would agree on this ...

From my point of view as previous stated, all rubbish!
