DTW Will Lose Post Office In February.

Fri Sep 28, 2007 8:33 pm

DTW's post office will be closing in February. I found that out last night while I was there mailing some packages. The post office is located near the Berry terminal. This will leave DTW without a post office. Is that unusual among the world's major airports. I have used the post office at STL and DEN, but have never noticed a post office anywhere else.

DTW's post office is referred to as the Air Mail Center. With it closing will that have a effect on air mail out of DTW? It is not just the window closing it is the entire center. One reason I like to mail stuff there is that there is one less step in getting that letter out to an aircraft and I have found that air mail gets to its destination a day or so faster than if I mail it at another post office.

They stated budget gets as the reason for closure. Are other airport post offices on the chopping block?

Hmm that is kind of a dissapointment however I'm not really surprised based upon its location. It is right there along Rogell Dr, right after you get off I-94 and once the Berry terminal comes down, I would imagine that whole area of the airport property could be redeveloped. It is not that convenient for passengers to use.

I wish long-term that they would get rid of that traffic light there and make that an interchange or something to prevent traffic from backing up at peak times

Ideally I wish they would open up a service center in the passenger terminals - like at DEN where there is a walk-up counter right in the main terminal.

That said, there is still a major sort facility nearby and there shouldn't be much of an impact on Air Mail as very little sorting actually occured at that facility.

The US Post Office has been in contact with AA to sort the mail at DTW (this is for mail sorting only--- there will be no "drop off service") since AA Cargo has plenty of facility space. None of the other carriers who have cargo space in DTW are interested in handling it.

AA HDQ is interested in the partnership as it will create additional revenue locally, however, nothing has been materialized as of yet. This was about two months ago.

That is a nice post office. I like it that it is before security so people have the opportunity to mail something home that isn't allowed through.

STL's post office is also before security, but it is out of the way where most people would never see it. It is down by luggage claim back by oversized bag pickup.

Have they done work for the USPS before at DTW? I have seen AA baggage carts at the post office. Does AA carry all the mail from DTW or is it spread out to other carriers.

Heck, I didn't even know DTW had one!

STL used to have a post office like DTW's Rogell Road facility. It was just east of the East Terminal; the parking lot was a good place to spot WN planes coming and going. In fact, the west end of the parking lot looked onto gate 2. You could also see planes takeoff and land!

However, for whatever reason it has been closed! It was great when it was a 24 hour facility and I needed to send a package out-of-town!

The main terminal post office is okay! But if you always fly AA, you might never see it! It's a little more visible when it's open if you're down by the M5/M6 baggage claim. I have a P.O. box there!

The mail is currently spread out to the other carriers, but AA does carry a large amount.

The AA Cargo building doesn't look all that large from the outside, but inside, it's just all open space and very clean.

MSY still has a Post Office in the main terminal sort of across from the FL counter but when I left in April, it had not been staffed since Katrina. You can still buy stamps and drop off letters but there wasn't a person there. There's still the main airport P.O just a few blocks away from the terminal down one of the access roads which serves the public.

A number of airlines (including NWA) stopped carrying the US Mail years ago because of excessive requirements and too little return from USPS.

ORD's post office is probably also worth noting. It's really convenient if flying from Terminal 2 or 3, as it is behind security between the two (strictly speaking, it's located in T-2, but it's halfway between E and F). I've used it many times.

The TSA has begun putting kiosks in at some airports (including ORD and CLT) that permit people to mail prohibited items home. It's expensive, but may be worth it depending on the item in question.

I have seen mail stations near the TSA at MSP.

Didn't the USPS have its own planes at one time? I remember seeing 727s with the post office logo on them.

Update: Looks like AA will be doing the sorting. The AA Cargo building had some modifications done to it.
