What Is The Longest Non-stop Flight From LHR?

Sun Sep 30, 2007 10:19 am

Just wondering what the longest non-stop flight is from LHR?

Is it South America? Or Singapore?

According to the Boeing range charts a 772LR can just make Sydney with extra fuel tanks and a 773ER can reach Perth with fuel restrictions. I don't know if anyone flies between these cities but I did read on another posting that few if any carriers had ordered the 772LR with extra fuel tanks.

LHR-CPT is 5209 nm. Your figure is statute miles.

I believe SIN is the longest nonstop from LHR, 5879 nm. Should LHR-EZE nonstop service ever be reinstated (I think BA operated nonstop at one time??) it's 20 nm further than LHR-SIN, 5999 nm.

QF once flew a 744 LHR-SYD non-stop but that was a special delivery flight... a world record at the time... 9188 nm
LHR-SCL is 6280nm if anyone flies there? LAN perhaps?

According to the Great Circle Mapper at http://gc.kls2.com:

LHR-CPT = 5209 nm
LHR-GIG = 4983 nm
LHR-NRT = 5191 nm
LHR-SIN = 5879 nm

Big version: Width: 481 Height: 241 File size: 6kb

This is the line of 5879 nautical miles from London Heathrow. Other than possibly Santiago, Chile, I don't know of any more distant airports that have a non-stop.

The reason I ask is because I wondered if BA will ever need something of the 777LR's or A345's range. But I think that LHR is so well positioned that any airline who operated out of LHR would never need an ULH aircraft for LHR flights. The only route I can think of is LHR-SYD, but we know that no aircraft, even the 777LR is capable of such route throughout the year with unrestricted payload.

No doubt close enough on a still air basis. A table I have shows about 6000nm by airways routes. However the equiv. still air distance westbound is about 6400nm , quite a significant increase.

Just correcting an error in my reply above. LHR-EZE is 120 nm (not 20) further than LHR-SIN.

Currently I would say that the LHR-SIN route is the longest (and seems it when you fly it) operated by both BA and SQ.

I did read somewhere that VS plan to operate PER and HNL non stop with the new 787 they have ordered? Is this capable and correct? I would say that if VS did operate to PER nonstop then BA would quickly be trying to do the same. PER was not a lose making route for BA they just needed the aircraft to operate to a better money making destination and now code share with QF from SIN. Please correct if appropraite.

Which co-incidently is exactly the same distance to HKG, to the nm. (5209)

Wrong type of mi - use nm. LHR-KUL is 5729 nm, vs LHR-SIN, 5879 nm

As per above I think Singapore is the longest from flight from LHR at the moment. It used to be Hong Kong years ago before China opened up new airways. Before that I think the aircraft had to take a southerly routing across Thailand.

LHR-SYD nonstop has been extensively discussed here, and while it may be possible for a 77L to make the route nonstop eastbound with heavy payload restrictions, at this stage, flying the westbound sector, SYD-LHR, is nearly impossible to make nonstop mostly because of headwinds.

With BI receiving their 777s there was discussion of them eliminating the DXB stop to BWN. LHR-BWN is 6096 nm, which is longer than LHR-SIN.

You beat me to it! It will definitely be one of the longest routes out of LHR, if not the longest.

BA have flown to SCL in the past but it may have been via EZE, which is currently the most distant nonstop destination.

Try it from MAN, according to great circle it's an extra 45 miles, which must make it the longest non-stop route from the UK as a whole.

Who operates nonstop LHR-EZE? Nobody as far as I know. BA operates LHR-GRU-EZE. I think that makes SIN the longest current nonstop from/to LHR.

Thought it was BA but come to think of it it wasn't clear on the timetable whether it was non-stop or not.

So it is SIN, how dull.

It's fun to try and think up incredibly long -- if not quite market-ready -- routings that are not currently flown. What is the longest conceivable nonstop between two major cities? How about Buenos Aires-Seoul? Actually, I wrote an article on this topic, which you can read here...

http://www.salon.com/tech/col/smith/2005/11/18/askthepilot162/

If at any point you are unsure about city pair mileage, there is no better source for confirmation than Karl Swart's Great Circle Mapper: http://gc.kls2.com

The fact I could spend long hours at this page feeding in random city pairs, mesmerized by the connectorial magic of countless red lines, offers discomfiting insight into the minds of those infatuated both with flight and geography.

If you limit it to major cities, hard to beat Buenos Aires to Shanghai.

AKL-LHR (9910nm) or even further is AKL-BCN (10,382nm), AKL-MAD (10,580nm). Vs 10,520nm for EZE-ICN. Thats the great circle, via airways would be even further.... 11,000nm there abouts.
The winner however I believe is AKL-SVQ (Seville) 10,766nm!  Smile

The longest commercial airline flight was a BA 772 charter flight that carried Prime Minister Blair and only 60 other passengers from an EU meeting in BRU to the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games at SYD (10,398 miles) in the spring of last year.

What I can never really get my head around is which major western European airport is closest to SIN. My gut instinct is to say FCO. But at 6,249 miles it is a little further than CPH (6,194 miles) and a quite a bit further than HEL (5,762 miles).

Think that flight took in the region of 18 hours. They have long legs when they are carrying a light load!

It wasn't a commercial flight, but one of QF's first 747-400s flew nonstop LHR-SYD on a delivery/public relations flight in 1989. It took 20 hrs. and 9 min.
