Looks like an MD83 so possibly leased from Spanair?

Terminal 1 of Madrid's Barajas International Airport hosted the official presentation of the team's new plane, La Saeta, an MD-83 operated by Swiftair and equipped with all the comforts a football team could ask for. Its interior includes comfortable and spacious seating, all of which is embossed with the Real Madrid logo. The club shield is also painted on the exterior of the aircraft.
Real Madrid President Ramón Calderón, President of Honour Alfredo Di Stéfano -the legend who has lent his name to the plane-, and the entire Board of Directors were on hand for the unveiling. Sporting Director Pedja Mijatovic, football captains Raúl, Guti, Casillas, and Salgado, basketball captains Reyes and Bullock, along with Joan Plaza were also in attendance. The La Saeta will make its first trip tomorrow when it carries the First Team to Rome for Wednesday's Champions League match against Lazio.

It belongs to Swiftair: a capacity provider to other airlines (such as Spanair when an MD goes tech) and tour-operators.

Swiftair (www.swiftair.com) operates flights on behalf of the regional carrier Pla-za, in the past they covered the network of former Rioja Airlines, and they are hired by travel agencies too as charter operators. Oh! I forgot it... They also fly the Ministry of Interior flights from Spain to African countries to bring the illegal immigrants back to their countries (when the law permits that).

For sure they are not the best, since their aircrafts are quite old.

Their maintenance tasks are totally outsourced to Iberia Maintenance.

Obviously they are not enjoying their best times nowadays. They spent more than 100M € in new players this season and they are leading the table thanks to referees' wrong decisions on the last 3 games... nothing to be proud of

Let me say that I think the first team in Spain that had a "private plane" was RCD Espanyol from Barcelona, that unveiled a F100 in their own colors two years ago (and this one is their property, not leased, thanks to one of their sponsors and investors "grup tarradellas")

It was really funny last year because city archrival FC barcelona (their basketball team) had to return home from an away euroleague game in Italy, just to find out that the charter plane the agency had hired was in fact this one.... some of the team managers were really pissed off to be flying their enemies' colours  gnasher   grumpy

A bit morbid question, but isn't it smarter to adopt the policy to not send the whole team on a single flight to avoid a loss of the whole team in a potental disaster like big companies do with their management team?

Manchester United at MUC comes to mind....

I don't think how being leaders of the table thanks to the referees can affect having or not a brand new airplane. Real Madrid is indeed having good times, and a proof is this plane (though I will have expected something better, that's true).
The club has also launched a new service called "Palco Aereo", for fans who, by paying the amount of 65000-70000 euros (definately by scratching their pocket), would have the opportunity of travelling and living with the team.

That aircraft was reported as operated by GirJet.

The aircraft is EC-IPV and according to the information on the website (www.gruptarradellas.com) they say "we have entered the airline business with the assistance of Gestion aerea ejecutiva" and also in anothe section they refer to having purchased the aircraft. Therefore this might mean the aircraft is theirs and GIRjet is operating it as you say

I saw the MD80 in Real Madrid colors when I arrived last Sunday into MAD's T1. First, I thought it would be an airline selling advertising space in their aircraft, but I tried to look for the name of the carrier and there was none... then, I thought that it would be used to fly fans to all Real Madrid games... but now that we know it would be used for the team, I would assume it would not operate exclusively for Real Madrid team?? or it will be parked most days in MAD!! Does anyone know if the operator will use it for charters when Real Madrid is not using the airplane?

Yeah that was my question too. Although you have to keep in mind that Real Madrid also has a basketball team and they play quite a few games in Spain and around Europe too. But even with that, I'm not sure the aircraft will have a high utilisation. What will it do the rest of the time?

Seems that this aircraft is banned in Germany in determined hours due to not accomplish the sounds restriction policy.

Which aircraft will fly Real Madrid football team to Bremen when they must to play against Werder Bremen? Another "Real Madrid" aircraft called "El Buitre"??? Big grin

Let's see...

This aircraft operated the GRO-MAD-GRO route for Spanair two or three months ago. I remember all that Spanair had leased from GirJet four Fokker 100's operating routes with not great demand until the arrival of Boeing 717's.

I for one was expecting something a bit better interior wise, maybe a 2-2 configuration with wider seats and much more leg room, surely there would still be space for the whole team going to a match (16 players, 18 for champions league, maybe a couple more in case of last minute injury) plus a couple managers, trainers, fitness coaches, and ceos (maybe a couple of reporters).

No. The owner of grup Tarradellas (Sebastian Javier) is also one of the videpresidents of the Espanyol, and probably he owns some shares, but I think that in a personal basis, not via his company

They should of bought an A380 then they could have had seats upstairs and a practise pitch and gym downstairs - training whilst they travel to games! Big grin
