Will Rogers World Airport Growth

I used to live near OKC, and ever since they began the remodel, that airport has taken off. Ever sice then, they have gotten CLE, BWI, LAX (x2), ONT, SAN, SMF, SAT, AUS, IAD, and ABQ. There may be more! That is quite a busy airport. I have always thought that OKC and OMA were the same size airport.

Ah, yes the Will Rogers 'World' airport. Bit of a misnomer since no flights abroad (well, there wasn't when I last used this airport in 2002).

Will there be any international connections? Or is the catchment too small to support services?

Well there is seasonal Champion Air to Cancun, and Puerto Vallarta. To bad Jazz doesn't go in there to Toronto or Calgary.

OMA is a little bigger than OKC in terms of passengers.

last year OKC had 3.5 million and OMA had 4.2 million

This year, OKC is up 2.15% YTD and OMA is up 5.3%

I'm really surprises that with all the OKC additions, it isn't up more. OMA has only gained 3 new cities: LAX: 1x 717, ONT: 2xERJ, and SAN: 2xERJ compared to OKC's 10 new destinations.

Not to mention WN adding n/s to DEN, UA upgrading UAL745 (flt #) to an A319, and the occasional F9 A319 to Denver +E70's. Who knows what the next destination might be. My guesses are on SFO due to being a big hub for UA. I heard XE (Xjet.com brand) will be dropping SAT/AUS-OKC/TUL due to poor load factors.

WN is really thriving in OKC. Now they really need MDW and a LAX n/s to go along with UA and DL.

They don't have service to there yet? Man, they better get on it!  Smile

UA and AA (AE) only take ERJ and CRJ to O'Hare so it may just be lack of demand.

The last flight I ever took in an Air Wisconsin United Express CRJ was from OKC. (Or one of the last) OKC is an airport I have never really seen much talk about, but with that new terminal, it is one of the most underrated airports in the country especially for the mainline spoke cities, and the Class C airports. That terminal really makes you feel like you are in Oklahoma when you arrive there.

That being said, that was one of my least favorite airports to dispatch flights to. Always needed an alternate due to Tstorms, routing the flights was tricky, plus unless TUL was good for an alternate, you likely had to bump pax just to get a good alternate on the flight (Next two closest cities were DFW and ICT)

Having grown up in the TUL area I never really gave much thought to OKC, and I've only flown out of it a couple of times, but I'm glad to know that it's doing well.

I don't know if OKC has one, but at least TUL has a U.S. Customs office on property.

Others pretty much hit on this already. When I first moved here 10 years ago the name sort of caught me as odd, but hey...at least it is not just another "International" airport in this country...which we have what...300 of? LOL

I think we'll start to see the jumps here over the next few months and into next year, once the new routes sink in. ExpressJet took a bit to catch on, but at least in the corporate world, it is spreading pretty quickly.

I would imagine AUS may stay on - much to Dell's delight, but SAT I don't think has much of a chance. TSA tried it and it flopped. The funny thing, MSY did pretty well for TSA...would like to see XJet give them a try.

Considering WN has been sleeping (and cutting back) for the last few years in OKC, it is nice to get some movement from them. I'd rather they stay out of the LAX market...let UA, DL, and XJet handle that market.

AA is mostly all mainline (M80s) to DFW, however a CR7 does pop in the schedule every now and then. They do a mix to ORD of CR7 and ERJ and then all ERJ to STL. This may have changed since the last I checked.

I believe there is one for basic customs handling, no pax processing though. That is all handled in DFW for the return trips from Mexico.

As a WN ramper in BOI, I have just almost decided to investigate relocating to OKC in near future if possible. I think I need a new perspective of life. Plus, OKC has always been a city I have wanted to live in/near.
That being said, how is WN operation there and where is a good area to live within 15 miles of airport?
I have only visited OKC once, but that was in 1995, so been awhile!

I guess this is both for you. I moved to Norman from TOL back in 97 to go to OU...meteorology of course and this is the mecca of servere weather. The adjustment was different for me. It is a much slower pace of life, everyone tries to help the other person out, and they are just genuine people here. I came in a couple years after the bombing and I think that really showed what kind of people they are. In 99 when the F5 hit the southern parts of the Metro, the entire area just dove in to help out. It really made you take pause and appreciate the people you live with.

The area is rapidly growing and really coming about. The two major projects, MAPS and MAPS for Kids, have been at the heart of that. They are essentially penny sales taxes that go to capital improvements. MAPS handled all the new development downtown. MAPS for Kids is replacing or upgrading every school in the city. Cost of living is pretty much in check, taxes are reasonable compared to other areas I've lived, and it is pretty easy to find something to do.

As far as where to live...i'm personally sided with Norman. I moved away once and came back. It has a great balance of a college town and a city with plenty to do. I rarely go to OKC more than once a week. The utilities are reasonable here, the home prices are very affordable, and the city is growing pretty well (I've already gained $30K in value of my home since I got it a couple years ago). One of the biggest projects in Norman right now is the University North Park project. This is right next to Westheimer Airport on OU's land. It is essentially a mix of retail, residential, and commercial businesses. The first plot of retail is about half done now and the new Embassy Suites is coming along quickly. The next phase is the lifestyle center with the high end stores.

Now as far as 15 miles from the airport, you are looking pretty much in SW OKC or Mustang/Yukon. Those aren't bad areas at all. The big thing would be to spend sometime and look around and get to know the area. One thing you'll learn is that depending on where you live, get ready to drive. OKC itself is over 600 square miles...add in Norman which is about 110 square miles...and then the other suburbs...it can take sometime to get "across town." I'm in East Norman just off Highway 9, so it doesn't take me long to get to I-35 and up to the City. It's also only a mile or two from someplace Steeler would love to walk around...the National Weather Center.  Smile One nice thing about where i'm at, i get to see most of the larger aircraft traffic going into Tinker fly off...nothing like the sound of a B1 or C-5 screaming overhead.  Smile

One of the greatest choices you'll ever make, Mtn. I constantly hear people berating OK in the media and when I travel outside the state, but I can almost bet money that when asked, those individuals have either a) never set foot in the state or b) didn't venture far enough off I-35 or I-40 to see what the state was actually like. Every person I've met who has been here for an extended period of time has had nothing but good things to say about it. I'm currently in the military and recently moved back from 2 years in Germany - I had the option to literally be stationed anywhere in the world, and my first request was to come right back here (granted, I graduated from OU). Enough bragging though.

The airport is located on the southwest side of the city, so keep that in mind when house-hunting. Anything north or east and you could easily be looking at a 45 minute commute, depending on what shift you worked.

I was just searching for fun. I was searching some summer date for flights from OKC-LAX on UA and it looks like united is adding an extra CRJ-700 daily now. In my opinion, UA just needs to replace both CRJs with an A319. Same amount of seats and it makes OKC look good. LOL
