Delta Starts SLK, PBG, Expands BGR

Fri Oct 05, 2007 9:21 am

Delta Connection, operated by Big Sky with B-1900s, has opened up stations at Saranac Lake, NY (SLK) and Plattsburgh, NY (PBG) - both being serviced from BOS - and is expanding service on the BOS-BGR run.

Quote:
Delta Continues Northeast Expansion Connecting Regional Business Markets with Boston and Beyond
New service in Saranac Lake, N.Y and Plattsburgh, N.Y., connects customers to Boston and more than 30 destinations

BOSTON, Oct. 2, 2007 – Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) will offer customers in Saranac Lake, N.Y. and Plattsburgh, N.Y. increased choice and convenience in air travel this fall with new nonstop service to Boston. The new service will provide passengers with competitively priced connecting opportunities to more than 100 daily Delta, Delta Connection® carrier and Delta Shuttle departures to more than 30 cities.

“As Boston’s largest carrier in terms of flights and destinations, Delta is pleased to continue expanding the choices offered to our customers by launching this service between Boston and Saranac Lake and Plattsburgh.” said David Bishko, Delta’s staff vice president – Alliances.

Delta Connection carrier Big Sky Airlines will operate the new service using the 19-seat Beechcraft 1900D aircraft, featuring stand-up cabins. Customers in these cities will enjoy:

Three round-trip flights between Boston and Saranac Lake, effective October 31st*
Three round-trip flights between Boston and Plattsburgh, effective October 31st*

”Big Sky is excited to continue its expansion in the Northeast as part of the Delta connection family”, said Fred deLeeuw, Big Sky President. “As we grow with Delta, we reaffirm our commitment to providing customers with the same safe, reliable service Big Sky has been known over its 29 years of operation.”

In addition to the new service to Saranac Lake and Plattsburgh, Big Sky also will expand from four to six the number of daily flights it operates for Delta between Boston and Bangor, Maine. The new Bangor flights will complement Delta’s comprehensive schedules at Bangor, including daily nonstop flights to its largest hubs in Atlanta and Cincinnati.

Featuring stand-up cabins? That's slightly humerous, eh? Good news for the folks up in SLK and PBG though!

Well that is somewhat good news for BGR after the pullout of AAeagle. It still does not nearly cover the service that Eagle provided (3x BOS and 1x LGA all on ERJ135s)

The PBG and SLK I believe is replacing the Commutair EAS service there.

Great, so instead of doing anything meaningful in BOS with that nice new terminal that they gave half up to CO, they're flooding BOS with B-1900's....*yawn*!

When did Plattsburgh change its code from PLB to PBG? I hadn't heard that one. Great to see more former US Airways cities getting reliable air service back. US flew to both cities from 1991-2001 via ALB and BTV.

The Beech 1900D, unless you are over 6 feet tall, is a completely stand up cabin, save for that 1 foot area where the wing spar requires the ramp at row 5.

As for the aircraft, what's the other choice, no service? Look at what US Airways just announced 2 days ago with PIT. They are effectively removing all commuter aircraft from PIT and leaving those cities with little to no connecting options. Having Big Sky to fly 1900s is substantially better than nothing.

PBG is the old air base where sched flights operate from now. PLB is other airport.

Hey the Be-1900 has got standup cabins. Also they are trying to get some of those vital EAS routes.

Im 5'8 and I can walk down a B1900 aisle. (I commuted from PIT-CLE on a B1900 when I worked for RegionsAir...dont remind me of the employer lol)

Anywho I have a friend who flies for Big Sky up there. Looks like they'll be expanding some more. Im glad to see Delta is stepping in to fill what USAir used to do in the 2000ish years.

What about the BOS-HPN and BOS-TTN flights? Have they announced/started those yet?

These additions are being made by Big Sky, not DL. Where they fly is entirely up to them. DL is just selling the tickets.

I'm a regular Air Canada customer and I love this airline for many reasons, but a regular PBG - ATL or PBG - CVG flight and connections would make excellent headlines for us up here in Canada. The one hour drive from Montreal to Plattsburgh would make absolute sense. It seems that PBG is 'taking off' as airport and I'm guessing the border crossing at Lacolle is going to be busy in the near future, both ways, if more and more flights are offered from PGB.

Delta currently serves BOS-TTN 3x daily using Big Sky B1900s. No BOS-HPN as yet.

well first i don't think it was DL's idea to give CO gates (thanks again MASSport!) also if MASSport would let DL have customs in the terminal the BOS would be a small hub by now.

Exactly. You'd think an XJ CRJ-900 first officer would be a little more "in the know," as it were.

That could be a dig at Cape Air, who beat them out on the BOS-RUT application.

From what I hear so far is that the loads are doing pretty good. Im not sure what the airliners.net people have against B1900's, but if the loads are doing good, all power to em. (Its actually not nearly as lous as a Saab, has great airflow through the A/C - Heating system, and the aircraft has good short field performance. Now the cruise could probably be picked up a few knots, but on the 200 and less mile runs that they usually do...10kts isnt a big deal. (Its like comparing a J-3 Cub to a Taylorcraft BC-12....either way its slow going).

You cant fly an RJ on every run. (Look at Cape Air's success with 9 seaters....when everyone says they should get larger aircraft)

Yes the hourly flights to BOS and 5 a day to LGA all on saabs. On top of a handful of Nwairlink Metros, COes saabs, and USAirs (commutair) Beeches all to BOS.

Man I miss the old days up here. UA 737s to ORD. 5 Delta Mad-dogs to BOS, CVG and ATL (via PWM, PVD and SWF) Continental 737s and ATRs to EWR and BOS. Usair had Fokkers and DC9s to PHL, props to dca and LGA.

You might think B6 could open BGR, at least in the summer months. They seem to have done ok at PWM despite the competitive ramp-up from everyone.

First of all, the fact that I fly for XJ, which has nothing at all to do with DL or BOS, whatsoever...you get the point! Second of all, I am in the know about the Massport situation. My statement was just a general one about the disappointment of what DL could have been at BOS versus just selling tix on Big Sky's B1900's.
