China 2008, Airlines Are Adding Capacity?

Mon Oct 08, 2007 4:24 pm

Hi all,

As China will host the Olympic games in 2008, would you think that airlines will add capacity to PEK and PVG?
Naturally you might think so, but, have we really noticed a major capacity changes to destinations in China that are related to this?

When I look at my national airline, LY, it seems like although LY added this winter a 3rd weekly flight to PEK, it does not, however, look like the summer of 2008 will see more capacity than was at summer 2007.

What is your input for this?

Thanks, Mike

China generally does not have open skies with anyone, just bi-laterals, which means you can't just add capacity at will. That extra capacity must be agreed to by both governments.

I would expect China to work out or have already worked out temporary provisions for increased flights next summer. We'll see what unfolds.

Thanks, but, I would imagine that China will benefit the most from added capacity... no?

Do we know of any EU airlines that plans on adding capacity?

BUMP.

I'd like to the know the answer, too.

There are some new routes opening from the USA, and I assume that some of the UA and NW routes via Japan can be upsized for the games as long as the bi-lateral allows them to.

But are there current route authorities to/from the EU that are being underutilized?

Air China is launching ATH services via DXB, 2 x B767 per week.

CA is also increasing Australian ops from 7 to 10 per week.
CZ is increasing Australian ops from 7 to 9pw.

Won't China Southern (or one of those China airlines) have started A380 operations before the Olympics? I thought, which ever airline I am trying to remember here, stated that they would be flying the A380 into/out-of Bejiing specifically for the Olympics - whilst showing Chinese progress as a global player (such as flying the "Big Bird" of airliners.

(Or will two Chinese airlines be flying the A380 by then?)

This would definately translate into additional capacity.
