Delta Changing Minimum JFK Bag Check-in Time

Tue Oct 09, 2007 12:53 pm

Just got this e-mail from Delta today....Any reason why they are changing it?:

Jetting out of the Big Apple with bags? Then be sure to get there a little earlier. The baggage check-in time at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is changing from 30 to 45 minutes prior to scheduled departure times—regardless of how you check in. To play it safe, we recommend you arrive 90-120 minutes before your departure.

This change is effective October 15, 2007, and applies to travel on Delta, Delta Connection® carrier and other domestic Delta codeshare flights.

But arriving early has its perks! Enjoy our premium check-in and lounge facilities in newly renovated Terminal 2. Or, grab a bite or drink in one of the Terminal's new bars or restaurants. Plus the Red Coats—back and better than ever—will be at your service every step of the way!

Not checking bags? We recommend you check in and are at the gate at least 15 minutes before your flight.

DL bags at JFK don't have a great distance to travel like the other stations with early check-in times (like TPA, DEN, and LAS). It must just be a volume problem.

I guess. Especially during the international rush, when the lines back up....Speaking of that, does anyone know how many check-in desks Delta has at JFK (not including self-service bag drops, etc)?

I'm not sure about Terminal 2, but when I checked in for my JFK-MHT flight at Terminal 3, I was shocked at how few ticket counters there were for the size of the operation (and the whole area is quite dumpy, but that's a topic for another thread...).

Terminal 2 is really nice, but unfortunately only for Medallion/BizElite/First Class check-in.

As far as I know, people who did OLCI and have carry ons only, can use T2 security (loophole, no rule against it), but agents are not supposed to help non-elites at that location.

Well there are three check-in areas in Terminal 3, but none of them are that large...I would be curious to hear how many total counters they have though...

IMO, you're pushing it anyway if you plan to turn up even without luggage, only 30 minutes before departure (boarding already!)... and at JFK, with bags to check ... well, most folks should be getting there an hour before departure anyway.

I've been flying every week for 15 years, and with carry-on only, I plan to get to the airport 1hr before pushback.

It is not showing up 30 min before with bags, but showing up 50min early and standing in line 20 min. Now plan on showing up 75min early and hope its only a 20min line.

This is the main reason that it is recommended you get there 2 hours early.

It's the dirty little secret that sometimes slips out. They know you'll get through security with time to spare, and want you to spend money once inside because you are bored and hungry.

It's a revenue generation scam disguised as an unofficial "rule" which is pretty lame. Further, it makes the gate areas more crowded, as the average customer is hanging around 1/2 longer than they need to, resulting in not enough seats.

Quick question:-

I am looking at flying with DL from DUB to PWM with a connection in JFK for Christmas. The connection offered in JFK is 2 hours, but I have heard that arriving international passengers now have to collect their bags and then check them in again. Now more checking through to destination. Is a 2 hour connection enough for this? I assume DL will be doing immigration pre-clearance in Dublin so that is not an issue.

Any advice appreciated as the next connection up has a 5hr layover!!

Thanks

It shouldn't be a problem. Don't be misled by the assertion that you have to "recheck" your bags. All that means is that you hand them to someone and walk off. They'll be tagged all the way through at DUB, so it doesn't take any time at all. Unless your DUB flight is very late or security lines are ungodly, you should have no trouble.

Thanks, much appreciated. I have heard plenty of good things about DL over the pond recently so I'm sure I will try them out this time.

But if you're one of the huddled masses checking in at Terminal 3, you're even more screwed. I can see why they have to make the change though - even getting to front of the check-in desk line 30 minutes before the flight may not be enough time for you to get through security and to your gate.

I haven't been through T3's immigration and customs areas in a while, but from what I've heard, two hours will be tight considering time spent waiting in line at immigration, waiting in line at customs, and then waiting in line at security to go to your connecting flight. The bag "recheck" has always been around at US airports, and doesn't take much time at all.

Also, the DUB flight arrives at an early hour (around 1130) and the only other flights arriving then are from SNN (also pre-cleared) and AMS. So going through the arrivals process at JFK should be easy then...

2 hours should be fine. Your luggage will not be declared "late" even if you have to spend over 1 hour waiting for bags and clearing customs, because you've already been checked in and tagged and you are in their system.

Further, you don't wait in the ticketing line to recheck your bags, there is a rechecking desk/line for that. So all you need to worry about is security, and you should make it through that, even at christmas.

Does T-3 not have dedicated Ireland lines?

I don't believe so, no. It wouldn't make sense to because the facility is so small and there are only a few flights.

However, given that:

I would say that two hours should be enough time.

At ATL, it's just the crew and diplomat lines. Perhaps it's similar at JFK?

Again, thanks for your input - even if I did hijack a thread on baggage!

I am fairly sure Delta to JFK pre-clears immigration in Dublin, the ATL flight certainly does, so as you say the only queue will be security really. Most of my trips to the US before have involved a few days at my arrival point before taking domestic flights, so I didn't know the re-check thing has been around so long. Good to know.
