Sky Europe Announces BEG, LJU, SKP, ZAG And KBP

Tue Oct 09, 2007 2:07 pm

According to Serbia's offical Tanjug News Agency, and reported by B92, Sky Europe will shortly launch flights from VIE to BEG, LJU, SKP, ZAG and KBP.

No news on the dates, but fares have been indicated - starting from 89 Euro's including taxes and surcharges.

I can only say that this news is getting major support from the Serbian traveling public and I can see them doing very well from BEG.

Great news! I'm sure, JAT and OS won't be happy, but otherwise, it is great.

About time such routes were flown by Sky. I'm particularly pleased to see KBP. Will this be the first route by a discount airline to Kiev? Wonder whether SJJ will at some stage appear.

I honestly thought that SJJ would make this list as well with lots of O&D traffic between VIE and SJJ, but I guess they decided to launch these flights at a later stage.

Let's see if WizzAir follows suit... their BEG flights have been predicted for a while now.

NE has some brilliant special offers – or “Hot Promo” in NE language – from VIE, all for E19.98 (£13.87) return or E9.99 (£6.94) one-way including taxes and fees, e.g.:

VIE-PRG-VIE
VIE-WAW-VIE
VIE-PRG-VIE
VIE-BBU-VIE

Screw you NE/5P for fleeing BUD  weeping  ...but otherwise I hope all the best for them mainly to see them return to BUD later. These routes make much sense, in fact should have entered these markets way earlier, but I guess better later than never.

I remember last year searching OS’ fares from VIE to OTP, SOF, PRG, BEG, etc, and I was shocked by how remarkably expensive they were. Now, however, it’s the other way: there are some brilliantly cheap fares. Of course, they’re only on routes on which NE operates, so OTP for £62 return all-in; SOF for £61 return all-in; PRG for £60; etc. Other airlines, such as OK, have also dramatically reduced their fares. As expected, OS’ fares on routes without NE competition are still ferociously expensive, but that’ll no doubt change once NE enters. I suppose they call it competition.

Great news for BG! It makes sense for Sky Europe to operate these routes, some are extremely short (such as Ljubljana and Zagreb) meaning they can get very high aircraft utilization in a single day. I am a bit suspicious how long they will last on the route to Ljubljana, its very fast to drive it but i guess if the price is right.
In other news is Sky Europe to base an aircraft in Sofia?

http://www.speroforum.com/site/article.asp?idarticle=11187

Sofia to 11 major cities including Thessaloniki and Nice...

I think Wizzair and Sky Europe will slowly move in the Western Balkans, especially on routes such as Vienna or Germany, because of the large communities of X-Yugoslavs there. London and the such will come later..but i hope sooner  Smile

This is going to be interesting, as much as ûi heard they are offering a 1stop deal via VIE at least that was the announced plan up untill last week :

"SkyEurope's flights between Sofia and the rest 11 destinations will be operated via Vienna, which is the main hub of SkyEurope. SkyEurope is planning further growth on Bulgarian market with potential plan of new direct flights from Sofia and is even evaluating the possibilities to create its own base in Sofia. "

As much as I believe Sofia is on the grow, If they could not make BUD work, they will fail SOF. I think W6 will attack and defend it's territory, and with a large order coming they will have equipment to expand on all fronts. Besides W6 already has it's subsidiary established in Bulgaria.

According to some sources here in Serbia, we are on the brink of W6's announcement of BEG flights. LJU and ZAG already have ops by Wizzair. The airline has tried many times in the past to start Belgrade flights and was apparently prevented by the MA and JU "disagreements" from the '90s.

Let's see if its true.

Does Austria have an open-airspace agreement with Serbia, Croatia and the Ukraine ?
I thought it didn't, thus the OS (and other national carriers) virtual monopoly.

Its not a question of Austria-Serbia Open Skies, rather European Open Skies Agreement. Serbia has signed it, not ratified it yet by the parliament, but has started applying it obviously. Croatia has ratified the agreement and is in full-force in the country.

Not sure about Ukraine.

If I remember correctly, Ukraine doesn't have an open skies policy with the EU. Likewise Russia. I believe that neither Macedonia nor Albania have such a policy.

How will they fly all these destinations? I really hope they now what they are doing. Their expansion plan is really fast and aggressive.

According a daily newspaper in Austria they also will not get 2 of their B737-700 and through this deal they will get 7 million €. It can also be read at a local Austrian aviation forum. Anyway I will fly them in Nov. Will be interesting.  Smile

Interesting news coming from Wizz and Airbus about a massive A320 order - will be interesting to see how many will eventually be based at airports of ex-Yugoslavia.

KBP is great news, if only to bring the fares on OS down. Its ridicoulus if you have to spend a weekend just to get a ticket for 500 and not for over 800...

Albania and Macedonia, together with the rest of SE Europe, signed the agreement at the same time. You can find the open skies treaty on the web, but I'm too lazy to search for it. However I don't know if Albania has ratified it yet or not.

NE is gonna start VIE-KLU-VIE, and increase VIE-INN-VIE to 3x daily.

From ATW yesterday:

"SkyEurope Airlines continues to restructure its network in an effort to enhance and stabilize its financial base. The company reported a loss of €37.6 million in the nine months to June 30. It will start by expanding its Vienna-based fleet of 737-700s to six beginning at the end of this month. "We are increasing our network [from Vienna] from 16 to 20 destinations, but we are concentrating more on increasing frequencies," CCO Karim Makhlouf told ATWOnline. The airline hopes to serve 2.1 million passengers in Vienna within the next 12 months. Its second base at Prague also will see a boost as it doubles its fleet to four aircraft from two.

To further restructure the company, SkyEurope will limit its Bratislava service to destinations like the UK and Ireland. "We will just operate routes to and from Bratislava that [make] the most economic sense," Makhlouf said. VIE will be the focus. "In 2-3 years, we will operate up to 15 aircraft in Vienna. There are, for example, many destinations in northern Italy that are not served by an LCC from Austria." The carrier will increase its twice-daily VIE-Innsbruck service to thrice-daily by the end of the month and is preparing to start flights to Klagenfurt. "We are now the second-biggest airline in Vienna," Makhlouf said. SkyEurope currently operates 14 737NGs and plans to add another 16. It is expecting to carry 3.5 million passengers this year and 4 million in 2008."

with beginning of the Summerschedule 2008 NE will base 4 more Aircrafts in Vienna for a total of 10 then.

Many more Destinations are planned then out of VIE ( beside the already named ones ), altough that are just Rumours at this time.

BSL/BOJ/MAN/TRN/BLQ/FLR/GOA are some of them

Right, but the ratification process can take years until it actualizes. By signing it, they are only promising they will take care of it "sometime in the future." In Serbia, sometime in the future can mean many years (as with many EU-compliant laws awaiting ratification).
