Airtran "Outsourcing"

Tue Oct 09, 2007 8:39 pm

Hey all,
I was just wondering if anyone has heard much about Airtran outsourcing their operations to airports or other services. For example, here in Savannah, the Savannah Airport Comission has just taken over FL's operations. Actual airport workers now serve as customer service reps, and rampers. Is this going on at many other airports? Thanks for the info!

The only place that I know of where the actual airport employs the CSA's and rampers is KHPN White Plains, NY.

Correct. The airport management company, Avports manages and handles ground ops at HPN, HVN, and other similar sized airports in the northeast. B6 is the only carrier at HPN to employ their own ground agents.

That explains their lacsadasical attitude toward on time departures and customer service I seem to encounter at HPN when I fly from there.

I stand corrected. Do they handle everything there?

RFD and HTS airport staff handle G4 flights. I believe there are other airports that provide ground handling for Allegiant flights but I can't think of them off of the top of my head.

ZW is actually now ground handling the UA flights in HPN.

It has been going on at SRQ almost since service inaugeration. Servisair does it there. For the ramp at least. It is still AirTran indoors. Here is a fine example of AirTran at SRQ

I am kind of surprised that FL decided to outsource their SAV field station ops to the airport authority. When I was working at FL a couple of years ago there was an effort to bring in FL employees at totally outsourced stations such as LGA at the CSA "above the wing" level. Is FL having that much trouble getting and retaining station employees that they have to resort to using airport authority employees?

All the FL employees were laid off here in SAV, and MOST, not all got hired on with the airport. They said that FL was in SAV telling them that this would not happen, then came to them three days before the airport was to take over and said it was. They were told that the SAV station is the worst station in the system, and also the station that loses the most money for FL. Apparently this caused a large fight with the employees saying that the flight schedule was the reason that money was not being made. I know if it is anything like it was when I worked at FL, I would be happy that the airport took over because FL treated us employees here in SAV like dog dookie.

Once again, I stand corrected. Is this recent? Is AvPorts outsourcing back to the airlines?

OMA2FAI2SAV,
Thanks for the update. I have always thought SAV was too close to ATL to make it work for FL and a mailine sized aircraft like the 717. Does FL still maintain a resevations center at SAV?

Not sure. I can tell you for a fact though it has always been airline staffed at HVN going back to Pilgrim Airways.

Any time. Anything you need to know about aviation in Savannah, I can help you with. SAV COULD work for FL. The main gripe we hear in SAV about FL is the flight times. There is no RON here in SAV meaning that the latest you can get into SAV is 5:38pm, and the earlies you can get out of SAV is 10:52am. That will NEVER work for the buisness people.

The res center is still here in SAV. On the 2nd floor of the old terminal.

On a side note, the terminal expansion is complete here in SAV, as is the bew 4 story parking deck. There are 4 new Gulfstream buildings that should be done by Nov.

I don't know about AVPorts outsourcing back to the airlines, but the ZW ground handling in HPN is a fairly recent development, about 3 months ago or something like that.
