JetBlue At Terminal 4 JFK

Wed Oct 10, 2007 1:15 am

I'm curious about jetBlue's operations at terminal 4 at JFK. I just flew to San Juan. All departures to and from San Juan go through Terminal 4 even though they are domestic flights. We also were parked at a remote stand for the flights. So we went down to the boarding area and were bused out to the flight. Why not just operate these flights from Terminal 6?

Also I noticed that jetBlue's International arrivals come into terminal 4, but departures are from terminal 6. To me I don't see the logic in it, but I know there has to be some kind.

Hey Kevin, maybe T6 does not have immigration and customs facilities. I have never been to T6 so I don't know.

As to why all SJU flights leave from T4 rather than from T6, I don't know the answer.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

International arrivals use Terminal 4 because there is no immigration facility at Terminal 6. Puerto Rico flights were moved to Terminal 4 two February's ago and have operated from there ever since. The reason was due to space issues at Terminal 6.

The reason all of B6's intl flights arrive at T4 is that T6 doesn't have and never has had any FIS facilities. Since those 2 terminals are not far apart and B6 doesn't have many INTL flights it's just as easy to have to planes arrive at T4 and then get towed to T6 and the people Airtrain it over to T4 than it is to build an entire seperate area within T6. I'dont know whether there are plans to put FIS facilities in the new T5 but since theat terminal will be right next to T4 I don't see why T5 would need one. Also when someone clears FIS they have to go back through security anyway to catch another flight.

Don't passengers pre-clear in SJU anyway? Or do the aircraft themselves have to be inspected?

Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States - no need for pre-clearance. It's a domestic flight.

Puerto Rico is a US Territory (if that's the right terminology) so there is no customs/immigration involved. SJU-JFK follows the same procedures as a domestic flight.

As for the inspections, all bags have to be screened for fruits, etc. before checking-in at SJU, so I assume the planes are also inspected.

I asked the same question to a B6 captain on my last flight to SJU in February. He stated that "new" terminal will have a F.I.S. facility for all of B6's intl. arrivals. I also questioned the terminal change for SJU flights, he said eventhough is a domestic flight NYNJ Port Authority along with CBP, want all flights to/from SJU to arrive/depart from a terminal that has a FIS facility. He mentioned something to do with Puerto Rico being a drug transit location to the U.S. from South America. I

Terminal 5 will not have FIS. That information is incorrect.

No, it won't. Our international arrivals will continue to go to T4. The reason behind it is to not give up any gate space allowing competition (i.e. Virgin America) to add more flights.

SJU was chosen to arrive and depart out of T4 because it had the highest amount of O&D pax, not as many people needed to make the trip over to T6 to make connections.

I understand why B6's international flights arrive at T4, but I'm still not clear as to why their international flights DEPART from T6 when the SJU flight (domestic) departs from T4. Why not have all international flights arrive and depart from T6?

As explained in posts above, T6 does NOT have customs/FIS. They must arrive at T4 which is equipped with FIS.

So in total with T4, T5 and T6. How many gate does B6 operate, and how many flights a day do they have from JFK? I am going to assume that if they are hording gates in T4 so that VA does not come in with more flights, they are going to have to use those gates or they will lose them?

Thanks

What is the status of B6 Terminal 5 at JFK. Does anybody have links to the project website or recent pictures?

Thanks

Okay here is the deal with that. I do the flights over at terminal four sometimes. Space is a HUGE problem over there and terminal four runs the show, NOT Jetblue. So they terminal four tell you where your gate or hardstand will be. SJU went to Terminal 4 because we are so freakin cramped over at terminal 6 that it took stress off our operation over at 6. Now, we pump outbound international flight out of 6, BDA, CUN, STI, SDQ ect ect because once again room over at 4. When an international comes into term 4 that plane either goes to 6 for an outbound flight or it will be put on a hardstand at the PZ. This happens right away because you guessed it room. From my understanding we are going to keep the SJU out of there because if we dont, we lose spots over at 4 and when there is a spot open over there you grab it. Oh, and for the hardstand deplaning, well you can blame terminal 4 for that, they say hardstand 5 and we use hardstand 5, they say gate 8 we use gate 8. Hope that explains the deal.

Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth, not a territory, as it's it's unincorporated, but it has the power to make it's own laws (for instance all the traffic signs in Puerto Rico are in Spanish). Its a pretty complicated debate since it happened in the 40's.

As a far as flights to and from Puerto Rico and needing to come into an international terminal....thats is not true or why it is done. AA: SJU-EWR comes into a domestic terminal same thing for AA at ORD? The next immigration is in Terminal B at EWR and the international terminal at ORD or UAL. Flights to SJU are only considered international on a FA or Pilot basis, as you fly off the mainland. It has nothing to do with drugs. If they dont catch the drugs upon leaving SJU then well...the drugs are now in the US. Just like with immigration into PR, if you get into PR, get a license and a ticket on a plane, Welcome to the United States. Same thing for St. Thomas.

mtb555.......................thanks for the thorough explanation, I found it to be the best. It makes sense that they hold on to that space at Terminal 4 so if they want it in the future they can hold on to it.

It is kind of a fun terminal to fly in and out of since when I arrived I got to see an Aerosvit flight, an Israir flight, I think an LTU, a LOT and an EgyptAir all headed out at the same time.

Your welcome. Yeah, Terminal 4 is a pretty interesting terminal. You get alittle bit of everything over there.

jetBlue needs as many gates as possible to accomodate all the arrivals and departures. jetBlue is expanding alot, which is great.
Bring JetBlue To Mexico City! (TLC and/or MEX would be great)
