Continental Express Dash-8?

Wed Oct 10, 2007 1:13 pm

I was reporting for the morning originator in White Plains NY yesterday morning (10/9) and parked to the side of the gates was a Dash8-200 painted in Continental Express colors. It wasn't light out but it looked brand new (well the paint anyway). When we got to our plane on the remote pad we tuned up tower and heard them using the call-sign "Commut-Air". I was unaware of any Continental Dash8 operators and was curious what you guys thought.

They operate a number of DH2's for Continental Connection, actually. All the flying except ExpressJet and Chautauqua are operated under the Connection banner. Commutair mainly does flights to CLE with the DH2's for CO.

Yep. The DH2s were a replacement for some ER3s that were being shifted/removed from service.

IIRC, Commutair is leasing 16 DHC-8-200s from Horizon, though not all have arrived. Also, IIRC, the DHC-8s are replacing the BE 1900s, with the 1900s leaving service in April 2008.

This is correct. Horizon is eliminating the DHC-8-200 from their fleet entirely to focus on the DH4 and CR7, and I believe the majority, if not all of them are going to Commutair.

All the B1900's will be gone from CO Connection's fleet somewhere around April 7th. I think the last city to have any Beech service is TOL.

Does that include the Gulfstream International aircraft in Florida?

ER4's. CO kept the ER3's and dropped primarily ERJ-145LR's and 145XR's from the ExpressJet fleet.

Not quite. THose were replaced with CHQ ERJs and CRJs. These aircraft serve different markets and are under the CO Connection banner, while the RJs are under Express. Commutair is indeed the operator, and is replacing its Be1900s, many of which are going to Big Sky.

Good question. I think he means the CommutAir Beeches only.

This isn't the first time this Dash 8 topic has come up either... I can't believe with as long as the Dashes have been around that there are only two shots on this site!

I feel much more comfortable knowing that my prop flight out of CLE will have an on-board lav.  Big grin

I read somewhere that the DH2 was replacing the ER3 (JFK and HPN used to be ER3s, for example.) Maybe ER4s were replaced by ER3s in some markets, and those ER3s were placed by Dash 8s?

I was going to mention that. I also hear that at least some of the Q400s are going to be based in IAH, and that Colgan may use some Q400s to operate for United out of DEN (that would make sense as Frontier is planning to do that).

The only official announcement I've seen is Colgan (Pinnacle) operating 15 Q400's out of EWR starting in 2008 with their first Q400 delivered sometime in December.

Other than rumors, has anyone seen anything official regarding the Q400 out of IAH?

They will run as CO Connection, not COEX.

Nothing official that I know of yet. This came from a recent Colgan newhire. Sometimes management/HR may say things that can be in the works and then fall through, or just rumors. Take it with a grain of salt.
