Diving Luggage On Qantas Domestic

Thu Oct 11, 2007 5:56 pm

Hi!

In November I'll do some trips in Australia (Brisbane - Cairns , Brisbane - Sydney) with Qantas. I have my diving equipment with me which is quite heavy. Poeple here in Germany told me that Qantas doesn't accept extra Sport/Diving luggage for free on those flights. The guy from the travell centre could not make a dael with Qantas for me, he told me they would take 30 Euros per Kg each leg.....
My question is if I can get a dael with them at the airport in Brisbane, Sydney or Cairns? I´m going with Singapore Down Under so I will not have any problems to get my equipment to Australia, but to take it with me domestic seems to be too expensive for me.
Any help is welcome.

Thanks in advance

Call Qantas themselves? If you live in Germany, I'm sure they probably have a ticket office somewhere in the country since they fly to FRA.

The thing is that the Qantas people here in Germany don't want to give me some Kilogramms for free on inner Australian flights...

Just got back from diving near LIR on Tuesday. First, I hope you have a great time!

Secondly, I would recommend you take your regulator in your carryon, to avoid damage. Even better if your carryon's weight isn't counted - not sure if that's the case? Not sure about Oz, but in the U.S. it for some reason counts as "life support equipment" and is therefore allowed to be carried on. (In case the cabin fills with water at 38,000 feet?!)

Are you bringing your own tank(s)/weight? If so, you could probably save money if you just rent them at your destination, unless you are diving for many, many days.

You could try to mail your BCD/mask/snorkel/fins to Australia, if you have an address you could mail them to. You certainly could mail them home after you're done diving. Or mail an equivalent weight of your other, less valuable luggage.

I didn't quite understand your itinerary...are you doing Germany-SIN-Brisbane-Cairns-Brisbane-SYD-Brisbane-SIN-Germany? If so, and if you're only diving in Cairns, you might save money to rent a car in Brisbane and just leave it in a car park with your gear in the trunk while you go to SYD and back. Or a cheap hotel room. Or maybe a local dive shop would babysit it for you for a few dollars.

Sorry I can't be much help here...

Have you worked out how much in total (for all flights) it will end up costing you in excess fees? Once you've done that, check into how much it will cost to rent/hire some, or all, of the equipment while you're here. It could work out cheaper to hire the stuff as you go.

I've only had excess weight with Qantas once, a couple of years ago, I was charged for it. Not as much as I should have been. They knocked a fair bit off the cost, so it was just a minimal charge. But, I have heard of people being charged full rate. I think it just depends on the agent at the time, and on the day.

You've said your flights are with Qantas. However, as a heads up, if any of those flights are operated by JetStar, you WILL be paying excess (and as much as they can get out of you), no way out of it. As JetStar rules apply even if it is a Qantas code share.

Full Baggage information is here;

Hallo Chase!

Thanks for the info. To take the regulator in my carryon is a good one.
I´m going to do a 5 week roundtrip up and down the eastcoast including a short hop to Ayers Rock. It will be 5 legs to fly domstic. On 2 out of those 5 legs I need to get my diving equipment ( BCD, regulator, suit, jacket) with me. The rest is arranged since I can store the equipment at some places while visting other cities.

Perhaps some quantas people or Australian fellas on here have some more hints for me? Could I talk to the station manager at Brisbane airport perhaps?

Thanks
Daniel

How many kg would you estimate that your gear weighs?

I have to say, I am very jealous of this trip you are taking...I have been to Australia but not for diving, and not to Ayers Rock.
