Air Berlin: German Regional LGW To Feed DUS Hub

Thu Oct 11, 2007 6:03 pm

German regional LGW Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter, currently operating with Dornier 228-100/200 will start operating flights under the Air Berlin designator this winter and open new routes from SCN and HAJ to DUS. Flights are to be operated up to five times daily and will allow passengers to make connections to Air Berlin/LTU flight at DUS. Additionally, Air Berlin will also begin selling flights from LGW's DTM-homebase on existing LGW flights to STR and BER and from DUS to GWT. Booked via Air Berlin, one-way flights will be available for 99 EUR all incl.

Good to see AB wanting to build up some feed, but given how limited DUS is flight number-wise thanks to the NIMBYs, is it really that smart to waste precious slots on 19-seaters?

They may as well use them for now, when AB really need the slots, they can cut it then.

The same has happened before. LTU took over RAS Airlines in the 1990s and used them to feed DUS from SCN, GWT and HAJ. Pretty quickly, the flights with SD360s were cut and the slots used for LTU's international flights with larger equipment , with RAS getting sold and moved elsewhere with its operation (MGL). They went bancrupt soon afterwards.

Some additional information:

LGW is to axe the following routes to free up the required capacity:

ERF - CGN - DUS
ERF - HAM

These used to be PSO until August 2006. As a result, ERF is to lose 3 of its 4 scheduled destinations and 1 of 2 scheduled carriers.

There are also rumours about DTM - LEJ -DRS facing the axe.

Not the best move of LGW to get sucked into the rapidly (over-?)expanding ABorg IMO.
