AA To Go 2x Daily MIA-MDE; 3x Daily MIA-BOG

Fri Oct 12, 2007 10:51 pm

American Airlines' announced plans to start MIA-BAQ service last May, using 7 of their dormant US-Colombia frequencies, and an additional three weekly flights to Medellin and four weekly flights to Bogotá, using their other seven free frequencies.

Since then, however, Barranquilla has become Open Skies, which gave AA seven free new frequencies. AA will still start daily MIA-BAQ 737-800 service on 13Dec07 as planned. However, since they still need to use their other seven frequencies, they will use use them to go 2x daily on MIA-MDE and 3x daily on MIA-BOG, year-round, effective 13Dec07. Along with their daily MIA-CLO service, this means AA will operate seven daily flights to four cities in Colombia.

These changes should be uploaded into the schedules this weekend.

DFW to Bogota would have been news, 3 daily from Miami to BOG has been done before.

MIA-BOG 3x daily has been done before, but not concurrent with MDE 2x daily. Colombia is to East Coast-centric for DFW to work well.

The daytime arrival to MDE is so much nicer then arriving at night. I felt very insecure driving on those dark lonely roads from the airport to the city.

Stupid. They should have put a 757 on JFK-BOG and preempted Delta. That is a market AA should own, and now it's going to Delta. Stupid.

They aren't set in stone. They don't have to be used on MIA-BOG/MDE. If Delta actually goes for JFK-BOG, AA can start it. But why? Considering MIA-BOG fares can be just as high, if not higher, and that the market is larger, and that it's a much shorter stage length, more MIA-BOG flights don't sound so stupid in the end over JFK-BOG, especially considering AA's shrinking fleet size.

Delta needs to be rewarded JFK-BOG authority first, and Spirit is likely going to ask for the same authorities. If Spirit applies for them, they will likely get the first reward (01Dec07) over Delta, simply because NK doesn't have any right now. Delta would then likely get the April 2008 award.

Great to see AA expanding even more to South America!

While we've discussed this topic to death before, I second the reply of Jfk777 and I wish AA would do at least *one* DFW-BOG. I know the passenger stats must be a proprietary secret of each airline, but I would love to know the breakdown of origination/destination point of AA's BOG passengers over the past couple of years. I guess from Mark's (MAH4546) comments on previous threads, there aren't enough passengers on a daily basis flying BOG-MIA-LAX or BOG-MIA-SFO, or BOG-MIA-anything who would rather avoid the hassle of MIA's immigration and baggage claim for the much calmer experience in DFW's new Terminal D.

Too bad!  Sad

The only market big enough to fill a flight with connections from Colombia is LAX in the west coast, and since AV is flying 4x weekly non-stop, AA already lost that market.

Plus, DL via ATL gets loads of people going to the west coast thanks to the codeshare with AV.

I think the 3x daily to BOG is more than reasonable. Its also been said that AV wants a year-round third daily too.

Indeed. I wonder how they will react to the impending arrival of AeroRepublica to Miami in 2008. Avianca will be at 42 flights year-round to Miami this winter, with the Miami-Cartagena-Pereira route going daily in December.

With Continental doing BOG to Houston for years now, why can't AA fly BOG to DFW ? AA fies from DFW to GRU, EZE, SCL, Lima and CCS. What is happenig now in Latin America is like the late 1970's to Europw with DFW, IAH and ATL going to LGW, now its not having to go to Miami instead of JFK.

I think it's been pointed out before that CO does the BOG-IAH route to route their passengers from the NY area, as in EWR-IAH-BOG . Since AA has a hub in MIA, their "competing" service is JFK-MIA-BOG. That sounds reasonable.

Having said the above, I still find it hard to believe you cannot fill a AA 738 out of BOG with customers that are not going to MIA or JFK. Sigh...

I understand that there was a deadline until yesterday for airlines to reply to DOT on Delta's application for JFK-BOG, and ATL-MDE/CLO. NK had already applied for FLL-BOG and FLL-BAQ, but still are protesting that the freed frequencies by BAQ becoming open skies should go back to the pool of frequencies rather than be available automatically to AA.

I don't imagine NK have much of a case, but I'd have to agree that as they were first in the queue, they should be able to get 7 frequencies in December, with DL on the JFK-BOG for April 08 and ATL-MDE in Oct 08. As far as I can gather CO has not shown any interest in the newly available frequencies.

As for AV's response, their hands are pretty tied at the moment due to fleet constraints (unless an OceanAir 767 is redeployed) until next year when the new Airbus fleet starts coming in. But they do have 17 frequencies they can use, plus a handful more they can apply for. I can envisage CLO-MDE-MIA A320 on top of the dedicated daily, maybe a second daily BOG-JFK. There have been rumours about Washington too.

As for Aerorepublica, I am not sure A business-classless E190 will do for them on MIA.

738: 1990nm 162 passengers. Standard range.
738: 2940nm High gross weight version.
BOG-DFW is 2119nm**
BOG-IAH is 1932nm**

** Great Circle Mapper. Just for illustrative purposes. Not valid for flight planning.

CO currently operates a 73G Next Generation for IAH-BOG.
Exactly, CO utilizes Boeing 737-724 ETOPS // WINGLETS among other 737 versions.
