CO/CommutAir FWA-CLE Goes Q200 On Valentine's Day!

Fri Oct 12, 2007 11:57 pm

Looks like FWA is finally getting some Q200 love this coming Valentine's Day!  hearts

I checked the Continental website, and FWA-CLE is starting the switch from the B1900 to the Q200 on 2/14/08. That day, CommutAir will be switching to a 4x daily schedule on weekdays... until March 1st, 3 of the 4 weekday flights will be on Q200s. (Saturdays will be 2x Q200s and Sundays will be 1x B1900 and 2x Q200s.) From March 3rd onward, CommutAir B1900s will be gone from FWA, period... all flights will be Q200s.

Any other CO Connection/CommutAir Q200 plans? When the B1900s leave the CLE base, will they still be used on CommutAir's EAS/Upstate NY services?

As far as I know all the B1900's are on the road out. BigSky is buying a bunch of em from what Ive heard and seen so far. My friend who was a B1900 Captain (now Q200) is my source on that. Whether thats crew room scuttlebutt or actually VP OPS news, who knows.

Last I heard, the BE1900s will be gone by June...then again, this is CO, who once boasted "All jet service out of CLE," only to bring the turboprops back.

The Q400s will be flying out of CLE starting in January.

Maybe Gulfstream will open some new EAS routes out of CLE? After all, that might fit into CO's expansion plans for the hub.

They will be Dash 8-200's as they have no 'Q' Models. The whole 'Q' thing is just a marketing ploy from Bombardier as the only REAL-True 'Q' model is the -400.

So, you are saying that there are no noise suppression technologies in the Q200 series?? They merely tacked a "Q" on the the -200 as a marketing tool?

If that's true, then it would be the THIRD coming of the 1900D's. Don't forget, COEX had them here before anyone else did. But then, I guess you did say second REINCARNATION, so maybe that's what you meant!

IIRC, the Q200 is a DHC-8-200 with the NVS (noise/vibration suppression) system and upgraded interior found in the Q400. So it's not a marketing tool.

That was my belief as well, and Bombardiers website would seem to prove it.

As for Q400's in CLE, we've got two gates set up on the D concourse to accommodate them.

Yes, I know what the 'Q' Series is and it is VERY rare on the -200. It was an option on the -300, and standard on the -400. I don't think the planes they are flying are new enough to have it. Only the very newest -200's have it.....

All the Commutair Dashes have come over from Horizon, and I believe them to be the true Q series. They are also equipped with HUD's...another rarity in Dashes.

(The add images feature isn't working for me, so) here is a link to a Dash 8 HUD on another site:

Will they be trained and allowed to use it..? It's a sweet system and useful for those foggy days in the northeast.

Chances are that since these came from Horizon they are indeed real 'Q' as Horizon had a very new fleet. Best I can figure out the real 'Qs' came on-line in 1999-2000, which is the right window for these aircraft. But, as I was trying to say.... not all Dash-8's are 'Qs'... only the very newest

Are the Q400's going to have an F class? If so, where? F has traditionally been in the quieter rear of prop planes, but a rear location would upset lots of current airport arrangements supporting F in the front.

Not gonna happen. The scope clause in the pilot contract requires all inter-hub (CLE/EWR/IAH) flying to be done on mainline jets.

Scope clause iis only between CO/XJT. One reason I know that is that XJT can't show any thru flights between the hubs. And we've had a lot of same flight numbers on XJT go like CLE-GSP-IAH. Never could sell them like that. RP does show flights in availibility as one-stop service to IAH.

But I can't imagine EWR being one of those routes. I COULD see LGA going from a 37 or 50 seat RJ to a 74-seat Q400. I think you'll see markets like STL, BDL, MHT, BTV, PWM, ALB getting the Q400.

You sure about that? I just read POS '02 and it says "express carriers". I took that to imply anyone operating under the CO Express banner. That said it seems that everything in this contract that says will not contains and equal and opposite escape clause for the company.

we would never operate a CLE-EWR flight with a prop plane or an RJ. We value our first class customers way to much to do such a thing.

I thought that there were 3 gates going to be for the Q400? I think it was D-02, D-14, and D-08/09 as the new gates for the Q400, and D-02 & D-14 were also going to be able to fit in a 735, if needed.

CO has 15 firm , 15 options and 15 purchase rights for Q-400s. CO announced the first 15 are for EWR, to replace ERJs on heavily traveled routes of less than 500 miles. The other 30 Q-400s options would most likely be 15 for CLE and 15 for IAH.
