El Al Incident At JFK

Mon Oct 15, 2007 12:40 am

While checking on a arrival for a my uncles flight,

I heard tower state that El Al had an engine fire.

As of right now they have shut down all departures out of JFK .

Does not seem like anything too serious, emergency vehicles were onsite immediately.

I called JFK and there is nothing going on. There is a Tier One Ground stop to JFK though at the moment.

Any updates on this? I can't seem to find anything on this on the news. Also what a/c and/or registration is it? Interesting if it turned out to be a 777 which seems to been a problematic type for El Al over the past month or two...

Nothing on the OIS about that - only thing is about an hour's worth of departure delays.

If you listen to ATC from about 8:15 EST or so. Not sure about exact time. Just know that as I was lookin for the flight I heard them talk about El Al.

Over the last 14 hours LY had 3 take offs from JFK;

13:30 LY032 with ECD - Took off exactly on time, ECD is now already on the way to LHR as LY315.
18:55 LY002 with ELA - Took off 20 min pass schedule time, ELA is now 2:40 hours from TLV.
22:50 LY008 with ELB - Took off 40 min pass schedule time, ELB is now 6:20 hours from TLV.

Nothing unusual.

The reason that airports shut down is for safety.

If all the emergency equipment is at one location of the airport dealing with an emergency - they have a very poor capacity to respond to a second emergency quickly.

Airports are very aware of the impact of such a decision on the flow of traffic.

Airports work very hard to get as much of the necessary emergency equipment and personnel back into position so operations can be resumed quickly.

But no one in the airlines or flight crews complains - because they know very well that they might need that all the equipment some day.

El Al has been having problems with the Rolls Royce engines on the new B777.

The aircraft experienced an engine surge and aborted the takeoff. It is currently AOG at JFK, but a replacement engine is due to be flown-in today.
