Former Viewing Area At IND?

Mon Oct 15, 2007 2:58 am

As i was looking outside of the C councourse (from within the games area) to the right, it looks like there was a former viewing area or some kind of outside/fenced in "patio" area above the B/C concourses. I have a picture of it but it is on my phone and i am having trouble sending it from my phone. What exactly was that? Hopefully someone knows what i am talking about  Smile

Yes, there was an enclosed observation deck in the knuckle between B and C concourses.

When I was commuting between Fort Wayne (my home city) and Indianapolis in 1999 for MCAT prep courses at IUPUI, I would always drive out to IND when I had time and spend some time there spotting from inside the concourses.

I discovered this enclosed viewing area on one of those visits. In the knuckle between B and C concourses, there was a hidden stairway up to this enclosed rooftop deck.

I think, after 9/11, it was somehow closed off.

Actually back in the day it used to be an open air viewing area. I remember spending many hours out on the deck watching the limited number of planes that used to serve IND. We are talking late 70's. It was in 1980 that I moved to Florida. I don't know when they closed it so you could no longer go outside. I moved back in 1995 and I honestly don't recall if it was already locked up so you couldn't go outside. But it was around 911 that it was closed off. It could have been closed because of that or it could have been closed off because of the retail area between B and C. It is a shame in either case. That deck gave a great view of the airport.

I doubt it. The days of dedicated viewing areas in US airline terminals are long gone. I think only the Japanese and Germans still remember to include them in new terminals.

However, I was just at IND this weekend and I noticed they had a detailed interior diagram of the new terminal on the lower level. Looking at the diagram, it appears that the "Civic Plaza" (the large central atrium in between the two concourses) will be outside security, so everyone can access it. I'm guessing it will have large windows across the space in between the two concourses.

Off topic, but I was wondering if US Airways will go to the trouble of moving their US Airways Club to the new terminal now that their IND presence is so much smaller than it was in the early 1990s. Do they still enough of an FF base to support a club? I also wonder if Northwest will open a WorldClub in the new terminal now that they've built up a focus city at IND.

It looks like it's still there, although closed off, as you said. The outdoor viewing area is still there too - it looks like it wraps around the enclosed viewing area.

I will post a picture of the outside viewing area once i get it uploaded. I doubt that USAirways will have a club in the new terminal. I don't think the doors to the old one in concourse D have been opened for well over 10 years. It is probably just an empty, musty smelling room right now.

In terms of NW having a world club, i don't see it in my opinion. WHile they have a pretty sizable focus city operation at IND, i don't see them growing much more than what they have. I could be wrong, but i think they are focusing on their main hubs. MKE used to be a sizable focus city but look at it now. (although who knows what will happen now that they have 47% of Midwest Airlines).

I am sure that the new terminal will have space for a club should an airline choose to open a club at IND.

I think it is unlikely that US will have one considering they closed the one they had. I think the space still exists to open it if they wanted. I do think it is likely that NW will open a club here. I was told that it is the #1 requested item by NW customers at IND. The new terminal will have club space and since NW serves two million passengers a year here it would be a good investment to lease club space.

Thanks for the correction - I didn't realize the US Airways Club at IND had closed. I know they've axed a lot of clubs in the last few years (SFO, CLE, etc.) but thought IND was still up and running.

Based on IND's role in Northwest's "heartland strategy" I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a WorldClub in the new terminal. American opened an Admirals Club in 1990 at Orange County airport's new terminal and in 1999 at the new Austin Bergstrom airport - prior to that there was no room for one in the old terminals.

The US Airways Club at IND closed in 2004, after the big Thanksgiving travel push.

It would be nice to have a WorldClub in Indy. I haven't seen anything about a club being included in any of the plans.

The club is constructed as part of the terminal construction. It isn't something the airline has to build. They just lease it. What kind of plans have you seen so far?
