There's definately more to this story than told coz I don't get it. Why would one's career be over for prank calls on a friend? It's not like he did something over the top!  confused

probaly had some previous problems with his employer and he was already on thin ice. That is the only way I can explain this bizarre incident...

We are talking Singapore. Chewing gum is just about enough to get you a lashing or at least get your tongue cut out. They treat "Phone fraud" there very seriously. Although calling this fraud is quite the stretch.

Would a foreign pilot breaking a local rule get punished or could he claim ignorance of local laws???

The pilot seems like a guy with a good sense of humor... It is sad that something like this can happen to a person for doing (almost) nothing wrong... Jail for 3 years!!! I thought Americans had it bad with the Patriot Act!

Good luck to the pilot and hopefully all turns out well in his favor.

Most laws don't have special exceptions for foreigners.

I wonder if a foreign pilot would get sent to prison if he tells his wife that he's not having an affair, but is actually sleeping with someone else. That would be a "false message", wouldn't it?

From the article:

Quote:
Under Singapore's Telecommunications Act, anyone who transmits a false message by phone can be fined up to $10,000 Singapore dollars ($6,652 Cdn) and jailed for up to three years.

Maybe a 16yr old type of joke, but why the type of punishment??

Seems very odd...

It is good to be young at heart on an 'occasional' basis. People are too serious now-a-days, always stressed & afraid to act a bit silly once in a while...

This guy reminds me of a British Fighter pilot I met once, he had a few drinks and was telling me about some prank calls he made to his superiors, really funny and a good guy.

Cheers!

Its only a fine, and you are allowed to bring in gum for personal use, as long as you do not buy it in Singapore.

But yea, immature pilot, but I think the sentence is a bit stiff

A bit stiff. Before I read the article I thought about shooting a line to PhilSquares to see if perhaps he was part of some drunk dialing. LOL

A teenager Michael Fay was caned in Singapore for minor vandalism or something like that. It caused quite the diplomatic incident a few years back. So it doesn't matter whether you are a citizen of another country. If you are in Singapore mind your p's and q's. So to us it seems rather overkill to have such major sanctions for a phone prank, but that is how the law works there. The pilot would know that clearly. A good friend was a pilot there and I am anxious to get his take on this. He now lives back in Canada and flies for a different airline.

Why would they sell gum in Singapore then?

Gums are banned for sale (not for consumption) in Singapore only until recently, when the laws were slightly amended. This allowed certain sugar-free gums for smokers and diabetics to be sold in government-approved pharmacies. Ordinary folks are also permitted to purchase these gums but they also have to have their name, identity card no., address and telephone number to be recorded.

Regarding the importing of gums for personal use, that was so long ago. The authorities have made it hard to bring in the gums, even one stick. Especially if the customs officers that you encountered are those who took their jobs way too seriously. I've had several cases of my own...

Thanks for clearing it up. I wasnt aware that the new law was in place yet. Obviously still not as readily on sale as in other nations
