LH Now Has An Enhanced A321!

Tue Oct 16, 2007 1:51 pm

Hello to all of you!

Today I had the chance to sneek inside the new D-AISH at FRA.

The cabin looks nice! Seats are still the same but toilets and overhead compartments are much more up to date concerning shape (design) and colour (brighter). The new lightning seems as it is sunlight. A real nice white light but not to bright. The overhead signs (no smoking/ fasten seatbelts) and attendance call buttons have changed as well as the screens in the cockpit along the LEDs in the pushbuttons. The flight attendants enjoy a new FAP with a huge touchscreen.

D-AISH looks really nice with it's shiny fuselage and the sparkling main landing gears. And the smell inside is new to! Air conditioning seems to be a less noisy! A small but nice improvement to the LH passengers.

is this aircraft one of the recently ordered frames? is the number of installed seats still the same (194 afaik)?
what a shame that they didn't paint it in retro-colors! I love this paintscheme Big grin

Besides the interior enhancements, what makes the new LH A321 enhanced? Do they have engines with higher thrust rating?

I flew on a LH A321 from FRA-BUD a few years ago, it was the most comfortable short-haul flight that I've ever been on.

The engines are still the same. LH uses V2500 engines on their A321Enhanced. Enhanced is not only the cabin but also some of the aircraft's systems. For example there's a change in the brake system on yellow hydraulics (emergency and parking brake). Also some (flight control) computers have different names or are put together to one computer with different channels (redundancy still given of course!). There are also some improvements in the passenger address system (interphone etc.).

I cannot name all the differences as I had to look in my training manual. The most important thing is the digital "standby" horizon in the cockpit that has included a lot more information than just a compass. Speed, altitude, attitude etc. are displayed by this instrument, which (as I remember right) is also supplied in emergency configuration.

Quoting Stylo777 (Reply 1):

Yes it is the first one of the order placed earlier this year.
D-AISI is planned for delivery at the end of Dec.

Quoting Stylo777 (Reply 1):

The amount of seats in 190 just like the other 321's.

D-AISH is brandnew and flown in ex XFW last Thursday, and started commercial service the next morning as LH008/LH011 FRA-HAM-FRA. It's log has only 38 flight hours at current.
She has already seen various airports : HAM,FCO,BCN,LHR,CMN,CPH,TXL,MUC,BUD and DUS.
She will make a nightstop in LIS tonight before returning to FRA, and will then go to ARN as LH 3004.

Are the new ENHANCED A32S planes including this newly delivered A321 going to feature drop down TV's for safety demo and flight map. Or did LH stick to keep away from those things on it's short haul fleet so save costs etc?

Are the enhancements of the same variety that distinguish new A320-series aircraft from older ones? Like look at Virgin America's overhead bins and then compare them to older bins. I've seen bins like that on a lot of the newer F9 birds as well and those aircraft seem to have multiple enhancements throughout the cabin including new flight attendant controls as well.

The touch-screen flight attendant panel has existed for as long as the A318 has been in service. It was introduced with the A318, along with the currently larger overhead bins. These features were made standard on all future aircraft. ordered The enhanced cabin that the OP is speaking of however consists of even larger overhead bins from what I understand (apparently from the current modified ones on newer birds). Also, cabin lighting is supposed to be brighter and the windows are supposedly "touched up" cosmetically to appear to be larger, although they will actually remain the same size.

Did they do something to improve the legroom? The last time I was on a LH A321 my knees were in my face for almost two hours, and I'm normal height. That would be more important to me than all the stuff about overhead bins and lights.

Aren't at least some A380 windows the same way? The window panes are huge on the inside but it seems half of the potential view is taken up by some framing and the exterior pane is the normal size. Of course, I'm just basing this on one photo I looked at, but is it the same concept? (I can't remember where I saw that photo).

had the opportunity to fly FRA - DUS on Sierra Hotel yesterday, great looking cabin! can't wait to test her when i'm on duty!

Quoting Lufthansi (Thread starter):
Seats are still the same

seats on Sierra Hotel aren't the same. take a seat from Sierra Golf, put it beside a seat from Sierra Hotel. you will notice the difference. but put a seat from Sierra Hotel beside a seat from for example Echo Kilo, you will find no difference. LH's A320s have different seats than their B737s. they look almost the same, but those on the 737s are made by recaro. those on A320s aren't. eventually LH has realised the difference in quality and decided to give their new A320s the better seats.

nope. no drop-downs. why take away the safety-demo? brings in the human factor, which is worth a whole lot more than a little monitor, showing you the same video over and over, on every flight.

other enhancements: newly designed and enlarged bins, brighter, fresher colors in cabin and lavatories, FAP (Forward Attendant Panel) is now a touchscreen, floorheating in the forward galley, cabin temperature now can be regulated via FAP.

Those are some changes I kow about, didn't have much time to discover more on a 30min flight. but i hope to be on duty on this bird after my vacation.

I am 1.92 Mts. and I did not have that problem, actually I found them very comfy.
Are you sure you flew in a LH aircraft? It is the first time I heard this.

As of April or so 2007 Airbus intorduced a new overall cabin design to it's A32S series. Besides the already introduced overhead bins the shape of the cabin on top of the isle was modernised and the same to the pannels above the passengers eg Fasten Seat belt sign etc. They look very simmilar now to the current Airbus Long Haul cabin design.

Thanks for your comments - I always thought that LH is very loyal to recaro and almost all their seats are made by this company. Can you please elaborate more and tell me who supplies the seats on A320?. To be honest I hope recaro can grow bigger because I feel that, of course from personal experience, their seats fits better than others made by B/E and alike.

Do LH plan to replace the A300-600 with A321s??? Thats quite a capacity drop on high density routes like FRA-LHR. These short but high traffic routes are hard to find an aircraft to fit at the moment. The 310/300 was never really replaced and the 332 isnt ideal for such short, high frequency operations.

Well it's funny you should mention this. as I was onboard BA's G-EUXL which has the new interior only yesterday and I noticed the lighting too. I was so impressed with the dimming reading lights I took a video of them on my phone (whilst on the ground) and sent it to MYT332 (who is a plane lighting connoisseur). The 3 pints of Stella at the gate probably made them more impressive to be honest but that's another story  Smile

I imagine you guys are talking about LED lighting, like LH has in their 346 cabins? If so, I thought that was pretty nice too.

No LH´s fleet manager has just stated that the A300s and B737s will stay for awhile and that there are no plans to replace them completely. Nevertheless some older 737s will be replaced with A319s and some older A300s might be replaced with A321, too.

On the contrary, I think the drop-down monitors are good on European flights, even if they only show the moving map, as on BA. They do not replace the safety demo, but, as in BA's case, serve a useful additional function of providing sub-titles to the demo in the language of the destination/departure country where that is not English. Of course, that's only useful when they get it right - I've been on several flights where they showed the wrong language!

IB use the drop-down monitors to show a mixture of tourism info and entertainment, all of which helps pass the time, especially when there is no complimentary cabin service any more!

I'm waiting for D-AISH to visit LHR again - any idea when it's due back?

I flew on LH3844 on 04Oct2007 and the flight was great -- it wasn't the 321Enhanced but it was still an enjoyable flight. The 321 is one of my favorite domestic aircraft and I always enjoy getting on one whether it's US or LH!
