WN Sked Announcement Anytime Soon?

Fri Oct 19, 2007 5:20 am

I'm just wondering if anyone knows when WN might announce the next round of new flights. It's been since late August when they announced the LA-SF flights (to start 11/04!) so it seems about time for Dec/Jan enhancements to be announced. I checked yesterday (thinking they might have a P R today) and they had removed all PDF skeds after late November but they were back (thru 3/07/08) this morning and I didn't spot anything new.

On http://www.southwest.com/travel_cent...travel_center.html?ref=trvltls_gn, it says that "On November 8, we plan to open the schedule for purchase through May 9, 2008." So I'd guess November 8.  Smile

Thanks for the input Smed'. The extension of the booking window has in the last year or two become related to, but more or less a separate event from, the announcement of new flights. The booking window is expanded by blocks of 2-4 months at a time periodically, certainly offering some new services. In addition to that, however, as new a/c are delivered and marketing conditions change, new flights are added, historically, almost monthly. I do realize that WN has said they were going to be reducing their growth rate and even trimming things back a bit but I also know they are still taking delivery of new a/c thru the rest of this year and next.

In other words, there still should be some new flights being added and there haven't been for a while. I'm just kind of curious about how quiet things have been at the WN press office lately.

You're welcome. I've also been curious as to how quiet things have been and have kept my eye on the press releases because I'm expecting an announcement.

Am I correct in thinking that the announced schedule adjustment from the summertime which affected many of the transcons (PHL-LAX, PHL-OAK, BWI-OAK, etc.) plus other adjustments "freed up" the equivalent of 8 or so aircraft? The SFO-LAX services obviously takes up some of those freed up aircraft, but it seems to me we're getting close to a point where they'll need to allocate those frequencies and the new aircraft you mentioned.

I also recall that Gary Kelly has been promoting some "exciting" changes to Rapid Rewards and other parts of the experience for business travelers, and I'm expecting an announcement on that soon. Will perhaps November 8 be a big day for new scheduled service along with some additional changes to the experience? Would make sense timing-wise but I don't know how these things have happened in the past: one big announcement or several smaller ones.

Any changes to the program always makes me nervous. Earning a free flight per month or more makes you really like the current program. The option to go to Hawaii is nice but besides that, most announcements have been restrictions.

I am interested to know what new city enhancements are coming down the pike though PHX already has great options on WN.

Yes, Smed', that was discussed a while back when all those cuts were being made and I believe you might even be a little low on your count. (The xld transcons alone should have freed up right around 6 Canyon Blues.) But then there were flights added at the same time (e.g., DEN-SEA, BHM-MSY, SAN-TUS) so I don't know exactly how many NET a/c are still "unaccounted for" and available for additional new flights, nor am I certain of upcoming delivery dates from Boeing.

I do know that there are ongoing reductions happening even in the released skeds (thru March); SAN loses a SMF frequency next February (taking us down to 102 TL daily departures from a current high of 104.) Like LAX, SAN is pretty close to gate gridlock so until more gate space can be obtained, I think we too (again, like LA) will have to see flights cancelled in order for WN to add anything new...

In any case, since there have been no new flights announced (via official P Rs) after 11/04, it is getting really late if they are going to start anything new in December or even January and I think they won't.

This is entirely a rumor, but I have heard from an official at ALB that WN may start new service to PHX on this new schedule announcement. Entirely a rumor at that, but it may be there on 11-8.
