You have to be very lucky with your private car to need just 1 hour - depends on were in Berlin you live. With Bus it's at least 2 hours possibly more.
BTW the train from main station to Stettin needs 2:12 hours...

This doesn't sound very promising.

Maybe they'll get a new train to the Hbf here.

Quoting Leskova (Reply 6):
Maybe they see a greater risk in angering LH than they see possible profit for the city in pleasing EK?

Given how LH is neglecting Berlin, they should take that risk.

Quoting Leskova (Reply 6):
Yes... Yeah sure ... closing one airport in a city of three airports clearly shows that they know nothing about aviation... Yeah sure

Giving up two airports that are actually inside city limits is really a sin. The could work side-by-side, all three of them, THF for small planes to other city airports, TXL for charter and holiday, BER (SXF) for what planehunter calls "premium" carriers.

Rumour :EK Wants To Serve Berlin -via Poland..

Sun Oct 21, 2007 10:13 am

Following a thread in the German forum airliners.de, EK plans to fly into the Polish city of Stettin-Goleniów ( 150 Km north-east of Berlin ) and offer direct bus-shuttle from Berlin to the airport.
It is thought that initial flights would start in march 2008 with three weekly A330 rotations.
Germany has limited the number of airports that EK can serve to the current four locations (FRA,DUS,MUC,HAM ).
EK ave requested flight-rights for TXL ,which have been refused so far under pressure of LH.

That's going to be a welcome prospect - a five hour flight to Poland and then a 2h coach trip to Berlin? Nein danke!

I understand they also want to fly to STR, but I guess that's out because of the German limit.

Why can't they just take "nein" for an answer and try somewhere else? (Like Dublin  Wink)

Because they know that they can make money in Germany.

Nooooooooooo.

I want to see EK at TXL!

But the whole thing is possible, Stettin is a good hour away from Berlin with a nice and empty Autobahn. (Has a few km where the road is bad, but otherwise it is fine.)

This would really suck, only in Germany. And there only in Berlin. Why can't our stupid government see that an EK flight would add value to the city?? But those morons want to close THF, so I don't expect them to understand anything about aviation.

That's true, but actually, the premium carriers prefer TXL over SXF.
Exceptions confirm the rule.

Unless they also aim at customers from Poland, I absolutely agree. For comparison: You need 2:07 from Berlin main station to the airport in Hamburg (ICE train and express bus together). The train ticket is already included in quasi all Emirates tickets sold in Germany. So if they are not able to start TXL directly, they should rather find a way to include the bus in Hamburg in their tickets, do marketing for the included train ticket, and think about starting the second HAM flight...

I doubt that. Poland is not (yet) a Schengen country which complicates matters. The local area is not a market, such a service must rely on Berlin and Berlin itself is not that big a market, especially in the premium sector..

EK sells over the price, OK, but getting the necessary premium passengers to drive 150 km they would hav e to pick them up with a limo at home and bring them back the same style.

Poland will join Shengen zone 1st January 2008, so will not be any problem with this connection. From October 2008 EK will open WAW as next destination in Europe.

MONEY!  Wink

Quoting Thorben (Reply 3):

This I too wonder. More connections would benefit Berlin. Now, as far as the government cares, LH to DXB would be just as good.  Wink But I do not see that flight. Did I miss it? Frankly, Berlin needs more connections if its going to continue to grow.

Quoting Jog (Reply 9):
and think about starting the second HAM flight...

Does EK have rights to a 2nd HAM flight? If so, that would imply an A380 going that way! I'm serious actually. First, I do not know EK's specific bilateral rights to fly to Germany. So if anyone has a link.  Smile
Second, from what I've read here on a.net, HAM will probably have enough demand for the A380. Question: Can EK get an A380 gate in HAM?

Quoting PanHAM (Reply 11):
I doubt that. Poland is not (yet) a Schengen country which complicates matters.

That would kill the idea.

Interesting, I missed that new forum. Now I'm going to have to spend more time on a.net!  Wink

No, not really - or why did they, capacity-wise, downgrade the flight?

Quoting Thorben (Reply 7):
Giving up two airports that are actually inside city limits is really a sin.

No, not really. But if you prefer having airports that'll eternally encounter problems whenever they try to even expand a runway by a single meter, than that's your preference... airport authorities and, for that much, airlines prefer airports located in places where an expansion can take place when it's needed.

Neither THF nor TXL offer much, if anything, in ability to expand.

Quoting Thorben (Reply 7):
The could work side-by-side, all three of them, THF for small planes to other city airports, TXL for charter and holiday, BER (SXF) for what planehunter calls "premium" carriers.

What other city airports? Which other city that could be served from THF, except London, has a "city airport"? And how many airlines even fly into THF these days, serving "city airports" or anything else? If it's such a great airport for airlines to use, why is it used so little these days?

And splitting TXL and SXF into charter and scheduled operations? That would create a situation as absurd as the one in both Paris and Milan, when the authorities tried to force airlines operating from one airport onto another. It's either one or the other, but one thing is absolutely certain: Berlin needs to consolidate it's airports, as it has nowhere near enough traffic to justify operating three of them.

As for that discussion between PlaneHunter and you regarding premium carriers... I'd say he's, so far, pretty much hit the mark with his arguements...
