A-380 Visit To DFW Is Cancelled

Tue Oct 23, 2007 3:49 pm

For some reason (unknown to me), the A-380 will not be visiting DFW in November, now. All I have heard is the visit is cancelled.

i never understood why it was visiting there anyways, its not like AA was going to order it, who would fly a A380 to DFW?

LH and KE both have the A-380 on order, and they fly into DFW. That is not to say they will fly an A-380 into DFW, but I suppose they could. LH is planning to fly it into IAH. With T-Storm diverts, a LH A-380, bound for IAH could stop into DFW for fuel.

One will eventually end up there one of these days, anyway...either through diversion or someone chartering one, or even *GASP* some foreign carrier establishing an A380 route to/from DFW. Before you pooh-pooh that last idea, there were rumblings last week here on a.net that QF might be considering the A380 to DFW  eyebrow

Seems immensely logical to me. As LAX is my home airport, I am astounded how often I must hub via DFW, DEN, or ORD. Thus, a large fraction of the Oz traffic would be better served going through DFW. Maybe enough traffic for 7 to 14 weekly frequencies on the A380 (LAX's dominance of Oz traffic is only threated if QF moved over to SFO).

However, it will take a small increase in range for the A380.

SYD-DFW is 571nm longer than MEL-LAX. (7454nm vs. 6883nm per great circle mapper)

Why am I comparing two different origination cities from Oz? I'm trying to make the point that SYD-DFW might not be economical enough due to payload constraints on the first batch of A380's. However, once airbus finished substituting more Li-Al and GLARE into the A380... not to mention a few aerodynamic tweaks...

So I predict QF DFW service in about 2011.

When did Lufthy announce that IAH was getting the 'Big Bus' ? Now we are supposedly being upgraded from the 346 to a 744 in the spring, but certainly no A380. If any carrier were to launch '380' service into IAH, I would wager that it would be EK, BA or AF and those are long shots at best.

BA seems likely due to the OW partnership and the strong AA hub down there. Other than that, rather QF than LH. DFW is not that strong for LH, they'll send her to Asia and ORD, JFK and so first...

Once Leahy has sold his 800 A380 and half of them are delivered, even some of the airports in underpopulated deserts might see them, but I agree not much before that day, so no need to test today, and London, Frankfurt, Shanghai have to consider how to host 20 of them before.

They can barely fill a 772 to DFW so an A380 would be pushing it.

Same here. I am not quite up to date on specs of A380; but I do dream of DFW-China. A CX A380 HKG-DFW???
I can at least dream right??

Possibly just a recognition of the fact that route proving and testing is done.
The flights to date have shown the thing works, shown the taxiway/runway data is valid. No need to fly somewhere to demonstrate that anymore.
The next big test is how it works in RPT mode and that starts Sunday 28th

If any US carrier is going to buy the 380 it would be UA or NW as they are the only current 747-400 operators and have the slot limits vs. demand to Asia. Besides seeing UA or NW colors on the 380 would be sweet!

That is what the LH people here at DFW have said. I hope we can get their B-747-8i here at DFW, we currently havean A-340-300 (sometimes an A-330-200), and use to get the B-747-200.

BA flying the super bus to DFW will have a decent chance of happening IF they can work out anti-trust issues over the atlantic and code-share and get AA feed on their DFW-LHR services.
I've flown on 9V-SPK.

Subject: A380 is coming.....

Plans are being made for the arrival of one of Airbus's A380s at DFW on Monday, November 12th. Available information so far is:
Arrival from Montréal, Canada on Monday, November 12th
A380 will be parked on the Southwest Hold Pad, utilizing taxilane H1 and taxiway HS, as needed
A380 will depart sometime on Tuesday, November 13th back to Montreal, Canada.
Aircraft will be fueled while at the Southwest Hold Pad
Coordination underway for the use of two portable widebody stairs and three GPUs to support the A380 while it's parked
Escorts will be needed support the aircraft while it's here
More information will be forthcoming as plans are finalized for this special event.

A memo from DFW ops was sent to various operators on the field to provide the known information at the time. I would hope that Airfield Ops didn't just send out the mass communications to persons with a need to know, for no reason. While the A380 visit struck us as all odd, it would have been interesting.... Certainly not surprised the visit has been scrubbed however.

QF is really, really considering DFW. But it HAS to be non stop from SYD (& ideally MEL too), what is holding them back is an aircraft with suitable range. Both the A380 & B787 will, more or less have the range. The distance SYD-DFW (tracking via SAN to avoid Mexican airspace) is 7453 nm.

Using the payload/range chart in the A380 Airport compatibility manual, the A380 will carry maximum pax and about 10,000 kg of freight. So in practise east bound should not be a problem, but you would probably loose the freight west bound. (The chart is based on typical international flight profile, ISA/NO Wind, 5% trip fuel allowance, 30 min holding, 200 nm diversion).

Using the payload/range chart posted by Wingedmigrator in these forums, the B788 will carry 224 pax and about 1800 kg of freight. So that should also be fine east bound, but will loose pax west bound. I would guess west bound about 190-200 pax and no freight.

Which one would QF choose to services DFW? Beats me! It would depend on the loads QF could expect. Given that the route would primarily be for connections at AAs mega hub, its really hard to say, but that about/just under 200 pax westbound for the B788 does not look good IMHO. I don't think you'll see anything happen untill 2010/0211 untill both A380 & B787 deliveries ramp up.

I agree with the statement that it has to be non-stop. But 7453 sans winds is the issue. The trip must be with unfavorable winds.  Sad

I do not have the A380 payload/range chart you described. Do you have a link? It will be the westbound service that determines route viability.

West bound is of course the limiting case, but 10t of fuel is a significient buffer. Also dont forget the flight is in both hemispheres, so its only in the northern winter half the time and avoids the really extream jet streams in both hemispheres.

Right, so I posted the post from the other thread for you showing the internal email sent out from DFW outlining the A380 visit. Whether or not the A380 is actually coming at this moment in time is moot, but at one point the visit was beyond a false rumor. Sorry you feel it's a waste of time -- R
